Hey Guys and Gals, I have a friend looking at this model of XT from trademe:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dual-purpose/auction-211297652.htm
Is there anything I could pass onto him in regards to things to look for or avoid etc.
Any advice/ info is much appreciated.
Cheers

I've done a few miles on a 2000 model, pretty much identical.
Main thing to watch is wear in fifth gear. Listen for any "nasty gear nosie" in fifth.
Other than that , they a re pretty much bullet proof
35000 km ridden hard , mine has needed
One brake lever (I dropped it off road)
Two rear, one front tyres (both fairly worn when I got it)
New chain and rear sprocket (well worn when I got it)
One battery (another one due now)
Starter solenoid (usual flyweight Jap bike crap, replaced with a $20 truck solenoid from Supercheap)
Had to fix the speedo drive (cost nil)
Weld the exhaust header when it vibrofractured (cost nil)
Fix a small oil leak from the starter drive (cost nil)
One tail light bulb
Oil and fuel, that's the lot.

My SRX-6 has almost the same motor. It is bullet proof. Mine has 99500kms on it and still going strong.

Another thing to watch is the cush drive in the rear hub - if the bike's been trailed rather than just used on the road, the grit/mud does a great job in grinding the casing! I've done about 40,000k on my '04 XT600E and despite a knackered cush drive (fortunately I also had a spare rear wheel) it's behaved faultlessly...
