Have they sealed some of it?, I'm sure the unsealed section was 120km when I did it back in 1988 (not on a pussy adventure bike either)

Your camera must be a lot better than mine to, if I remember rightly, you're right across the other side of the gully to get that shot of the bridge?

Yeah, they've sealed a bunch of it, about 25 k's past where that photo was taken. the photo was from the other side of the gully.

What a great ride it was yesterday.:sunny:

1. 6.30 gas-up Hastings, XR Johnny, and newbie, Comrade Darren.

2. Met up with DennisO at Bayview.

3. Angle parking, banjo country style !

4. First look at the lake, 11am.

Arrived at Waik' store for gas and pies.

A couple of dudes in a 4WD came over to chat.
Turns out one of them was a chap on KB called Bigfish, from Cambrige !
...was to be a day for bumping into KBers...

1. The store.

2,3. Obligatory waterfall shots

Got away before noon and headed 'North' to the Minginui turnoff.
Took a planned diversion to a fire lookout about 5km off the beaten track.

1. After that followed a neat trip through the forest where upon exit we caught up with 5 bikes who had come through just minutes before us !

Some were KBers too. Notably GLG, whom we rode with on my 1st KB outing, the MMMMM.

2. After a great catch-up we headed along SH5 and stopped for a well earned rest in the late afternoon sun in the beautiful Esk Valley.

3,4. Final stop by the sea just out of napier for a fuel top-up.

All in all, a great day out.

Cheers, Tony.

Great ride report.
How were those tyres in the gravel?

Can't speak for the others but I think I had too much tread , need more rubber less groove but the extra groves on the back made it easer to back into corners .:innocent:

It was great to meet you guys. We left about 15 min after you and meet a heap of clowns on the road .Hope you managed to avoid them all. We saw a crew of mainly Yamahas(real bikes)at Minginui turnoff. You cant of missed them by much. Has XRJohnny designed a trailer for the copious amount of gas he needs?.Hope to meet up again one day.Cheers...Keith. P.S.Johnny can probably use all the DRs leftovers.
