View Full Version : Is it my sparkplugs? Or carb?

Okay,
So im having an annoying time with my CBR at the moment and it seems the cheap thousand dollar CBR is finally catching up with me.
SOOOO anyway, when i start up my bike in the mornings. If she dies,She wont start again straight away unless i push start. Also in the mornings after starting, If I rev her up she seems to be unable to get past 6-8thousand revs for awhile? All is well when i am commuting around town (80% of the time) but once riding for maybe 5-10kms at 100k's plus, the bike seems to change sound (dropping a valve???) and will gradually lose power until eventually dieing. It will then start again in about 5 mins of me leaving it.
All these stupid problems seem to me to be related. However im not sure what it could be. Is it my Sparkplugs (i think this to be likely) or possibly my Carb?
Or alternatively i ride my bike to the scrap yard tommorow and go buy a Morris Minor? :angry2::crybaby:
Any help/abuse/HTFU comments appreciated...

Your problems sound to be fuel related. Inability to rev freely when cold suggests the choke is not working. Cutting out after short time at sustained 100kms suggests that fuel supply is not keeping up with use. There could be a few reasons for this...blocked breather, blocked fuel tap/line/filter, float level(s), dirty jets...
Carb?...you actually have 4 of them.
If you can't afford to have a mechanic do what's required, perhaps you can grease up to Frosty. He's a good cunt and sometimes runs spanner nights...your bike could be the 'patient'.

You running it on 91 or 98? My experience with this bike is that it sounds like your running 98 and you needa change the spark plugs. Could be wrong...

Thanks for this advice. I will check as much of this as i can....
Hmm, As much as im sure Frosty would loooooove to help me i enjoy learning about my bike and would like to learn as much general maintainance stuff myself. Will keep it in mind though...

Running 91 as i heard it would be better for the bike...
Will take to the sparkplugs with some sandpaper when i can

I did say 'spanner night'...you do the work using Frosty's facilities, tools and on-the-spot advice. Or he does the work, explains what/why/etc and you get to pass the tools and stuff.

That won't be helping. High compression motors like the MC19 are a lot happier on 98. In many bigger bikes it makes little difference but for the high revving IL4s it does.
As for taking to your sparkplugs with sandpaper  - why on earth do you need to do that? If your plugs are getting severely blackened you are either running way rich and fouling (which might explain the difficult starts) or you've got buggered rings or summat else.
If the plugs are buggered replace them. They only last about 8-10,000km on a little IL4. :niceone:

Sandpaper to sparkplugs...?
The only things to do with your plugs are to check you got the correct gap,
And soak em a bit in petrol....
Or replace em....
NO sandpaper

, used to do it on my old go-kart when it wouldnt get spark. Dont ask me where i got the idea from
Petrol does make sense though lol
I might try 98 though
And i've done about 3-4000 k's on it now spose i might just change spark plugs anyway...
Check all valve clearances. Had the same problem with a bike a while back.

Make sure you get the right heat range! 8s should be good in yer MC19.

I had the same issues as poster 1 on my FZR, then it eventually stopped and wouldnt start at all, The issue was the valves were getting all clogged up woth carbon. Took it to a mechanic friend, who cleaned the valves all out, and while he was at it did the rings and a hole heap of other stuff. Could be something like that.
For me it was a pig to start, wouldnt rev through the full range sometimes, and would ride along fine for a while then sound as though it had dropped a cylinder or was losing fuel, and turned out to be valves. After the rebuild it did actually drop a valve altogether. hopefully its not as serious for you!!

How many k's had your FZR done?
My CBR has done 40,000 but i dont think it has EVER been looked after.
I'm thinking of trying as many basic things as it could be but may just end up selling it and putting the rest of the money into my project bike and a small car :(

1. make sure valves look good and a adjusted correctly
2. check fuel filter for blockages
3. clean out carb bowls and check float levels
4. balance carbs
Symptoms sound like cold starting circuit on the carbs gets the bike started and then fuel starvation afters. Fuel filter not allowing adequate fuel flow as all carbs are affected?

So after spending an afternoon on the bike with RM, i believe the problem may have been fixed, checked all spark plugs, they were fine, checked breather, no problem.
Ended up cleaning some gunk out of the carbs with carb cleaner. Took it for a quick run up the motorway without issue, and the top-end seemed a little better. Hopefully no more trouble at 100km/hr.
Thanks RM i owe you a box

Pull the plugs and have a look , too much stop starting around town will clog them up . Take it for a decent run
