I need to know some roads in the Auckland region - Rural or other that have both formal names (e.g. SH43, Ohura Road) and Colloquial/common names e.g. Forgotten Highway. I need this information ASAP for a little project I am doing.

Your help is appreciated

State Highway One runs through Warkworth. It is called Browns Road, Auckland Road and Great North Road, but is SH1 the whole way.

I did hear somewhere that Twilight Road out of Clevedon is so-named because properties on either side were owned by Mr Day and Mr Knight...don't know how true that is though.

"The Rotomas" = State Highway 30, 42km north of Rotorua.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-38.06823,176.615911&spn=0.013041,0.027637&z=15

"The East Cape Loop" = State Highway 35, east of Opotiki.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-37.894363,177.794495&spn=0.836633,1.768799&z=9

"The Waioeka Gorge" = State Highway 2, south of Opotiki.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-38.378269,177.82196&spn=0.831104,1.768799&z=9

edit: er, none of these locations have cellphone coverage either. The Rotomas do - VF and Telecom coverage 2km to the south.

This sort of stuff should be in a wiki. A pity mere mortals don't get to edit it.

The Great South Rd to South Auckland has an unusual name, when I was a kid and dad was driving there he used to call it "Wind-up-the-windows-and-lock-the-fucking-doors"

The Coro loop is the Coro loop. Not many non bikers would get that. We ride it clockwise or counter clockwise

I find the best roads are those where no-one actually knows what it is called.

SH16, most people accidentally include Old North and/or Peak Road as being included in SH16 but they're actually not.

Coro Loop is Coro Loop, some people say 'The Coro GP' but that's not very common.

The "Forotton Highway" referrs to SHW43 between Taumaranui and Stratford (In Taranaki). It runs through a small establishment known as Whangamomana which has a fair bit of history behind it.
Interesting to learn that the "Coro Loop" refers to SHW16. I'd always assumed in was short for the "Coromandel Loop", or SHW25. learn something new every day....

No, the Coro loop is the road around the Coromandel, not SH16.

In the same way that SH43 has been glamourised with the name Forgotten Highway, SH45 (from New Plymouth-Opunake-Hawera) has been named the Surf Highway but has also long been referred to as " 'Round the Coast".

The stretch of winding road road on SH3 between Kai Iwi and Wanganui used to be known as Goat Valley but that name no longer really applies since they took all the bendies out of it.

SH3 south of Mt Messenger to Pukearuhe is "the Uruti Valley".
Most of SH3 from Mahoenui to Pio Pio is "The Mahoenui's"

Enough to go on with?

Mangakahia Road between Kaikohe and Maungatapere is also known as the Twin Bridges Road.

The road from Hastings (well, Fernhill/Omahu) to Taihape is known as the Gentle Annie (or just the Annie). Originally, the term Gentle Annie referred only to the steep hill in the middle at Kurapaponga. It is not yet a state highway, so has no number.

Is it sealed right through yet?

MSTRS

No (10 etc)
Edit. There is about 35kms of gravel, split about 25/10 either side of the sealed hill in the middle. There is talk of NZTA taking over the upkeep from Hastings and Rangitaikei district councils...in which case, sealing should not be far off.

levin to foxton is the foxton straights. [also SH1 i think]

Goat Track - yes! SH - No! It's just humble 'Highway 22'

What's the proper name for the Watertower Hill Road?
Yeah, that would be 'Tupurupuru Te Wharau Road'

SH4......and right now, it's condition is said to be crap! Fortunately I had to divert to Tauranga on the SC and missed out the Para's, but Max was bitching about it for days.

Sorry Nasty, I don't know many of the delightful roads up that way, but I do particularly like the bit of SH1 I believe is known as the Mangamuka Gorge and I have yet to sample the part of SH12 through the Waipoua Forest on a nice day, but I don't think that has a name.

Waiwera Hill = SH1 just north of Orewa, Johnstones Hill= SH1 just south of puhoi, Schedaways = 1-2 km stretch of SH1 north of Puhoi, to include the hill. So named as it is next to the Schedaways farm.
Matamata Straights is SH just to the north of Matamata stretching for approx 10 kms..

Will think of some more and edit this post as I do.

Not quite...
Wanganui to Raetihi = Paraparas SH4
Waiouru to Turangi = Desert Rd SH1
Foxton to Sanson =- Foxton (or Himitangi) Straights SH1

The road from Tokaanu towards National Park is known as the Saddle Rd (at least the hill part at the Tokaanu end). As is the road from Ashhurst to Woodville on the north side of the Manawatu Gorge.
