I've several different flavours but unfortunetally you are in the wrong bit of the country. Someone with fast internet up your way should be able to download them.

Most flavours are on the ftp2.jetstreamgames.co.nz server so can be downloaded at very quick rates. (7-10 minutes at work :) )

Any Linux nuts know how to get my internet working on my Linux??

currently with wired country, so have a blck box that plugs into the network port on the comp, and then goes to the roof dish.

I am running Redhat 2.4.18-14, and need to intsall a PPPoE client, or do I??
Seem to be able to see the device "3com 3c501" in eth0 but thats as far as I get.

I thought this version kernel came with a PPP.. thingy but cant seem ot get net working on linux!! and with all my crazy lecturers demanding linux goodness

I'm not sure what you need for "wired" interent but if you need pppoe have a look at rp-pppoe. I think that's what you need. If you could give me a bit more of an idea what your problem is/what you have done etc, I'll try and give you a better answer. Haven't played round with pppoe much but shouldn't be too much from pppoa etc.

Download Fedore, Red Hat's free version. It's not too large, and a pretty nice implementation.
Let me know if you want a copy.

3c501 is your ethernet card.

under the networking options there the card above mentioned as being in eth0, but for the life of me I cant get it to active, I have got a roaring penguin PPPoE on it now but I is thinking that the fact the eth0 wont active as a prob.

used "ifconfig eth0" in the terminal to see if that could see it but no, where to go from here?? could it be a driver problem with linux and the card??

Looked at where my windows was connecting to the net and it is through the WAN miniport (PPPoE), which in the device manager is at ROOT\MS_BRIDGEMP\0000, could this need a driver for linux???

ps I aint no IT genius so dumb it down a shade in the replies please techno people

Ok it looks like you aren't loading the ethernet driver. As root run
lsmod |grep 3c501 If it doesn't find anything you haven't got the driver loaded. If that is the case run

modprobe 3c501
If this is successful run ifconfig eth0
If that displays information including your Hardware Address something like 00:00:ac:e3:56:fc Then you are in business :niceone:

Now run adsl-setup from rp-pppoe and follow that through. Now if that all works try adsl-start

Note - these changes won't stick on a reboot, Let me know how you get on and I'll try and remember what files to put the network stuff in on rh.

Hi Big Dog

I'm just down the road, and a guy at work has a portfolio of every single distribution known to human kind, I can burn one if you like. Unfortuneately I am teaching most of today, I could probably borrow one over the weekend and copy it at home.

You should get hold of one of the "live cd" distros like Knoppix or one of the more user friendly ones like Slackware.

ok got it going, had to DL the drivers for hardware from the nVidia website, followed there instructions and whammo nothing changed!!!

Went back to your notes after seeing this meggage pop up
eth0 has an alias to modul 3c501 in modules.conf, instead of currently loaded module nvnet

so did the
lsmod |grep nvnet and then it started. You said something about having to change something to make this change stick??

Still having trouble as it is going painfully slow, net that is, dont quite think I have the pppo settings right as it is as fast as what I get in windows before loggin on to my isp properly??

Also, sound on linux?? Will recognise my sound card now and play test sounds, will also play sounds in shitty little games i found on there but wont play a cd arrrgh!

It is user friendly.
Really!

Boot from cdrom - pick packages - restart - done.

Well done...ish :yeah:

Still better than d/l'ing the floppies off the local bbs and getting ftp up and grabbing mosaic and.....

dhunt

Ok you need to edit /etc/modules.conf and change the

alias eth0 3c501 line to

alias eth0 nvnet as I'm figuring that is what you are using driver you are using now aye. This will tell the system to use this driver for your network card now.

Regarding setting up pppoe itself for RedHat here's a nice howto. http://fatoprofugus.net/code/pppoe.html Try following that through and see if it still goes slow. If you follow the option 2 there and download the if***-pppoe scripts that will cause the system to run on boot for you.

Presumbably it works under windows?? If this is the case it either means you haven't got all volume controls up or you don't have the audio cable going from your sound card to the cdrom drive in which case you need to play the sound digitally. xmms or similar cd players support and option to play the sound digitally and don't require this cable.

If you think slackware is user friendly wait until you try gentoo! It asks the user to do everything.

Unfriendly systems these days like SuSE etc that don't want to interact with the user really at all.
