View Full Version : Ideas for mixing oil and petrol out on the road

If manage to get the 500 road legal via LVV certification plan to do a few adventure rides, looking for novel ideas please on how the two stroke mix could be done without carting a gerry can full of petrol and oil pack, just want to pull up at gas station.
Are the auto oilers like had on me old 125 ER literally just a oil container thats gravity fed with a bleeder or is it driven through diaphragm in cabie or something ?
Would take much to hook one up to the KX ?
Cheers

I would use like pill bottles full of oil for say one bottle = 5l of gas, then if you chuck 10l in empty two pill bottles..... Or some such...

Hmm I don't know about this. Would it be easier to try amd make a tank that will hold the oil and fix it to the bike somewhere and when you fill up say 10l, you just add the right ammount of oil?

Most filling stations sell 2T oil.So all you need really is a reliable measuring container that seals and is easy to carry.

Good ideas so far thanks, yeah thought along the lines of the pill bottles like the lead additives people chuck in, have a holder on the bike for them like a wee two wheeled junkie :)
Mates been running his 500 on Amsoil 100:1 for 20 years, not a lot of amsoil would have to be added. Could suringe it out of the pill bottle and shoot round the tank for better mixing :) lean bike from side to side.
Like to mix it well in gerry can normally, but guess the fully synthetic stuff combines more naturally than the gluggy crap of yesteryear.

my old '91 KDX 250 had an auto lube system so all you did was fill a container on the bike, then a seperate cable running from the throttle operated the oil pump and volume of oil. only thing is it was difficult to assertain if the pump was working properly, which on my bike resulted in a siezeure at the top of thompsons track:blank:
you can buy small containers of 2T oil at most servos (100-200ml i think).

I mix up the whole one litre bottle at 20:1 and then mix that down 5:1 - ala 100:1or mix up the 1L at whatever ratio is required for the end result. ie, mix it up double strength for twice the litres in the tank. It will mix in with the fuel properly coz its already mixed down with fuel, so it won't just fall into the bottom of the tank and stay there.
Only a little 1L graduated fuel mixing bottle is required, plus your oil (not much of it!), and a rag to wipe up excess. You get used to the colour of it after a while, and you can tell by sight if there's too much oil in it.

Id get one of those kdx overflow bottles that fit up under the back gaurd and just fill it with oil and mark out levels for amound of oil per tank.
Nice bike btw

Yeah Oiler not the best idea really eh :)
The main concern is that the petrol and oil is mixed proper - quick release gas tank "and shake it all about" :)

it will be well mixed after the first 100 meters of riding,
the dilution process is almost instant.......oil & petrol like each other very much.
Not like water which runs away to the bottom of you tank

Back in the 50s and 60s two strokes were very popular, Villiers-engined British bikes and NSUs and all sorts of scroters. They wouldn't have autolube back then, would they?
So how did people get around NZ? Sell pre-mix at the petrol stations?

I used to have little 100ml "hip flasks" of oil Id make up before a bucket race meeting. Two of em would take up sod all room in a bag. then you need to work out the ratio before hand --100ml/X litres of fuel in tank

Yes,there was 2 stroke at the pump - BP Zoom was one brand. The BSA Bantam (and others) had a graduated tube in the filler cap,you put the oil in there, and then emptied into the tank....so all the oil ended up in the fuel.I used to put the oil in first (shut the fuel tap) and then the fuel going in would do most of the mixing...then a shake shake.
Life is so difficult these days - you actually have to think these things out, instead of it just being part of a culture....the knowledge was all around.

I did the same thing when I use to ride my Suzuki RL250 Trials bike on the road.
I knew if I hit reserve I could put in 5 Liters so I carry two small bottles of oil in my pockets.
Put the oil in first and try to mix it in with the petrol as you full the tank.
And give it a good shake by holding the front brake on and po-going the fork's.
Now this will earn you some strange looks from other people fulling there cars.

what if you plastic weld or somehow else attach a tube to the bottom of your filler cap with measurements on it of say 1 or 2 litres worth of oil. see attached pic

Isnt a kx500 a bit of a crazy adventure ride bike? I rode a cr500 a few years back and it was beasty, hard to imagine a road version of this, unless you are going flat out all the time motocross style. That would be fun though. Also i thought the 2 smokers didnt like cruzing, and plugs gummed up etc? anyhow happy riding!

Cheers all, thanks for the reminder of petrol and oil liking each other :) and the drawing.
CR500 by all accounts are not as smooth at delivering the power as the dirty 5.
