Got any interesting pics of weird and wonderful ADV bikes? I'm thinking bikes whose primary design weren't focused towards the ADV market.

I'm aware of the Terra Monstro of course.

Here's one I just found on ADVrider.

Just had to look up where Tamahere is. Not far from where I saw that outfit in late January (northern Hamilton). Looks very interesting - just needs 2wd like a Ural patrol ;)

WHAT MAKES A BAD BIKE?

8._ROKON 340. Brought out in the mid'70s, the Rokon was supposed to be the answer for those of us who hated to shift. All versions of the Rokon were very heavy, and loved to plow straight-on ahead, even if you sort of wanted to turn at the time.
To start the big Sachs engine you had to tug at a rope-starter, which took a strong arm and an even stronger patience level. It came poorly jetted, and when it loaded up you would rip half the calluses off your hand before getting things spinning.
We talked about the belt drive earlier, and the less said about this the better. The thing was fast and had disc brakes to slow it down. Sadly, they worked intermittently, and the master cylinder often boiled over, leaving you with a lever that came back to the grip and a corner that rushed up to meet you. Gearing down was impossible with the torque converter, which meant you free- wheeled into turns and down hills. Spooky.

Is pretty wicked, what a great piece of forest too...
I once did see a TDM900 geared up for Adventure riding in West Germany.
It was an amazing piece of kit, even had knobbly tyres too.
Imagine how well that would have gone...>

They say that the Tenere could have a TDM900 tranplanted into it if you could find a wrecked one, dunno if this is true or not?

A popular upgrade in Europe is to fit the TRX800 motor into the Tenere chassis, I gather it drops straight in. I don't know if the TDM900 motor is any bigger or not.

Still, it would be a wicked machine then? I did see that super Tenere on TradeMe, looks good but $7000 for a bike that is 20 years old?
I guess I could keep the KTM for that long after all and sell it then Eddie...

There couldn't have been many of the Super Tenere brought into NZ, and after seeing PeterHansel ride them in the Dakar, they are more than capable of off road riding, much in the same vane as the PD, same era of course...

If yours had been a 950 I would have been sorely tempted, could even have swapped a road bike for it, but while I think your 640 Adventure looks the dogs bollocks the singles are not for me.

And I keep forgetting the TRX is an 850, it would be fun.

You can't get a big bore ktm as a road bike so you can still adeventure on it? or will you keep the other bikes for that.

Keep the KTM and shelve it, do it up and give it a great big spruce up when the money comes, if it ever does. I want to get the tank painted and have a look at the electrics.
It seems the bike should be in the south Island as it would be suited there, mind you I do love it, it needs good tyres as the knobblies are a bit harsh for the bike, as they do wear out fast. I keep spitting up stones at the buys behind so should look at some Scorpions or similar.
I have the Husaberg which has the long range tank on it, good bike, goes very well and is very capable.
The seat is a tad hard but I could get it padded out a bit more I suppose.
Don't get me wrong, the 640A is the dogs bollocks, I wouldn't mind two of them in the garage.....

The TRX and TDM 850 motors will slot in with a couple of minor bits of work - oil tank is remote on the tenere's rather than on top of the gearbox and one bolt needs much of its head ground off. The TDM900 motor will apparently fit but they need a heap of work to get them to fit.

I get the impression that the XTZ's have a better suspension concept/design than the PD's but they need a good shock and possibly a WR450 front end.

Wicked to know there is so much knowledge out there...
Where in the hell did you get that :niceone:
Sometimes we just throw things out there and Wham! along comes someone who really does know stuff.....
Thanks for that, I knew it could be done but was unsure. The next thing of course would be once...

a. You get the bike
b. You really need to steal a TDM as there won't be any wrecked any time soon...
c. They are nice bikes in their own right.

Knock yourselves out - http://www.xtz750.com/ Far far to much info on there but if you search hard enough you'll find plenty on engine conversions. The gurus are Jenna and Kymmy the girls - yes girls - from Raid Extreme a firm that builds gear for rally raids.
