Sitting there eating my tea with brain at half mast watching the news item about the Alexandra annual rabbit shoot. Saw a figure in the background for all of 2 or 3 seconds doing a kill count but I swear it looked like Malcolm. Still, all the residents of those southern towns have striking similarities, don't they mate:innocent:?
Thought you'd be out on the 'strom chasing the little buggers over the hills!

He's there a couple of times. First time walking through shot in background screen-right to screen-left. Second time as you said - counting up the wascally wabbits. Distinctive in blue cap and blue jeans. Nice coordination there, Mal!!:woohoo:

over the weekend, a sudden reduction in rabbit numbers was noticed. Lead poisoning is suspected as the cause. But a similar sudden decrease in rabbit numbers has been noticed at this time each year. In Central Otago anyway.

Yeah Geoff, that was me. :innocent: The row of rabbits they showed me counting was ManDownUnder's team kill. As a member of the orginising commitee I wasn't eligible to enter.
Then Nasty was on with her piece as well. So tonight was a real KB TV night.

The rabbits are just dumped. The way that they end up after a shotgum blast there's not much left thats edible.

Why not use rifles then? What with it being Easter and all I thought a rabbit omelette would be the way to go.

Too hard to hit moving rabbits with any regularity with a rifle.

what about rabbit stew?
It's easter - you have to combine it with an egg somehow. Eggs and stew just sounds weird.:weird:

We shot 510 Rabbits, 20 odd short of a guaranteed spot in next years event, so it's back to the ballot system for us.
MDU, Speedy girl and myself braved the elements and did the hard yards, but my hat goes off to MDU for managing to go a whole 24 hours and never once asked who had the portable espresso machine.

Seeing all the dead rabbits lined up it would appear the rabbit caclvirus didn't turn out to be the end of the high country rabbit problem after all.
How much do shotgun shells cost when purchased in bulk? Would it be worth paying for rabbit control that way?

We paid $120 for a slab of 250 rounds, Which is a pretty sharp price.
From memory the total Rabbit take was 14799, 600 less than last year and from what I understand RCD still ticks over but is far less effective than it once was.

Shooting from a helicopter on a regular basis, is also the norm in some parts of Central Otago.

I remember my old man telling me how he went on the Easter Bunny Shoot in 1990 with his AK-47 on the back of a flatbed truck with his mates from the assault rifle club.
He said an AK can make a rabbit disappear....!!!!

Never was that dramatic when I shot them with an AK47, they kinda cart-wheeled a tad but still looked flasher than the one in peaseas road-kill pic on the Easter thread.
Got more splat using a 30-06 with 110grain hollow-points...

Rifles also have this nasty habit of sending lead a looooong way over hills and the like too. We had a few complaints from team members of that little zinging noise echoing around them as they walked. Still no idea where it came from but it sure we'ren't me.
Shotguns are good although the shoulders get sore after a slab of decent ammo.

It gets packed into refrigerated containers and sent to Africa to feed the hungry.

What I failed to mention was that it was at night, the searchlight was on the bunny and everyone let loose.....probably more like 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 into a bunny !!

Does anyone have a link for it? I saw Nasty (doing a fucken AWESOME JOB!!!!!!) on the online playback thing, but nothing on the Bunny shoot.

I got more "splat" with a SLR 7.62.... "AK's" just slow 'em down ...
But for a bunny shoot... you need smaller rounds to get the final count up...
