Was headed off to a welly ride out over on the wainuiomata
coast, but we never made it.

the engine just stoped dead.:gob:
didnt lock up or make any nasty banging noises.:angry2:
it got picked up on my ute from petone this morning.

will keep posted as to what has happened and why...

No chinkle chinkle noises as it died either?
Mine just sounded a bit like the chain dropping off the rear as the engine went quiet. No lock up or banging noises here either.
Take it you've read Nordies info on 3rd gear exploding.
Very interested to know more as it's diagnosed.

hi
thats the weard bit about it, i had already done around 80kms travel in the morning was only 5 mins away from other guys at start point.
it was just like i turned off the key,
no bang, no rattle, i was doing around 85kms on the clock.
going up hill, so i guess under load..

Rotten luck mate. Hopefully it is just a simple electrical issue like my XF650 used to have.

The battery terminals were a little dodgy and needed a clean and a tighten every few months to stop the bike from doing what you just described.

Hope it all turns out well for you...does sound electrical though.
Any spark ?

DRs seem to be dropping like flies at the mo...

Was yours a gearbox issue ?

junkmanjoe

im thinking is a bit more, we put it in first gear and you can push it like its out of gear.
but can hear the piston going up and down.

So there's no compression? My brother-in-law's dirt bike did that, ridden too hard it had burnt a hole through the piston crown.

Hey Joe
If you need another piston you can have my spare big bore version.
New rings, a buff with a wire brush & all will be sweet. You might need a thicker head gasket though.

Seriously though, at least you have a warrenty & lets hope that doesn't become an issue either.
Good luck.

PS: Can you guess what the piston is out of?

When mine broke I was stuck in gear but could push the bike with and without using the clutch. The piston would not go up and down. Couldn't shift easily. Once home (via trailer) we rocked it a bit and heard a chunk of gear falling to the sump. I managed to shift gears a few times and could still push the bike but the piston still did not go up and down. Then it all jambed then it got free again. We never tried the starter button but even if we did I dont think it would have turned over... bent crank etc.
Removed clutch cover, fished out piece of gear then took it all to mechanic which is where it still is.
Happened on the Dusty Butt ride in the middle of the Rainbow.
That has all been said before in Nordies gearbox thread.... what ever that was called.

That piston looks like it's out of a big two stroker, so won't be any good in the DR.

Definitely run out of compression, either holed a piston or bent some valves somehow, you don't always hear valves bending.

Do drs have a decompression device?? maybe look at that, but my guess is the cam timing has slipped, and bent valves.

That piston is either out of a compressor or an old (very)tractor.

junkmanjoe
12th April 2009, 20:28
what would cause the timing to move out of place.

maybe a sheared locating pin on the cam. Mind you I don't know dr engines at all, but am an engine rebuilder by trade so have had to look at a lot of failures over the years.

so youd know the KLR pretty well then:lol:

I've heard of the auto Decomp jamming causing simular symptoms on the DR, i hope its something that simple

My DR is 31 years old and still going strong. Actually, prob not original engine, but hey, DRs are still good. You probably burnt a valve or fried the coil.

If you are thinking of the insurance write off thing it would not work as my cover is for crashes and theft, not engine failure. I checked when that was first mentioned in another thread because claiming insurance on engine wear didn't sound right to me.

what do you think has happened.

From what you,ve said I would be first checking anything to do with compression.

Is the spark plug still in/tight (unlikely that it has come out - But legend has it that it has happened in the past)

Also check the plug for tell tale bits of piston stuck to it from preignition/overheating etc.

Next I would remove the rocker cover and check the valve clearances.

Check decompression set up etc.

If this turned nothing up then the head would come off for further inspection.

At least they're attempting to find the cause, not just fix and forget.
I had a Gixxser a few years back which snapped a camchain at 11,000km, total engine destruction, but out of warranty, so I had to suck it up. They said "sorry faulty camchain, sometimes it happens" which was of no real comfort. A $50 part destroying a $3000 engine will always leave you feeling a little pissed:angry2:

lugging that super tanker around would strain any motor.

It's a lot less weight than having a pillion on the back and they come with rear footpegs to allow that so I wouldn't have thought a few extra litres of fuel would do it.

cam chain was checked and ajusted twice with in 4 months last year, around august, but never since, next service from when i brought it, at xmas time, is at 18,000km which is another 300kms away.

if it broken wont it fall to the bottom of the caseing, or stay hung up.how would they know that.

If you have had the bike serviced by a registered Suzuki dealer at the appropriate intervals as laid down in your manual I can't see how they can point the finger at you for it being broken and try worm out of the warranty.

It's got an automatic cam chain tensioner.

Some workshop service sheets use a generic "tick box" system that gives just a overview of work done.
Don't read too much into that. Although, a good mechanic would write "Auto Adj" next to the box.
I have noticed that many manufacturers have reduced the quality/plate numbers on cam chains over the years.
ie, Gn250's were a 5-4 chain originally I think, but the new ones are 4-3.
Not sure about DR650's.
Chains do fail, but it is fairly rare. Generally it is due to a faulty Auto Tensioner, and I would be pulling that apart in the course of evaluation.
Good luck with getting back in time for your ride;)

Servicing by other than an authorised dealer does not invalidate your warranty.

They can probably tell if it hasn't been sitting in the guide correctly by wear marks on the guide, or on the sides of the guide or chain tunnel.

Should they say that they're not liable, don't go down without a fight. I think Suzuki will come to the party on this tho. Like others have said, maybe a faulty tensioner. The DRZ tensioner is prone to failure and I wouldn't expect the design to be much different between DRZ and DR650.

This stuff IS vital to me - its so good for my soul so to speak - out seeing NZ u dont see from a car with great mates and fun social time, building lasting friendships - all good stuff! Most important adv riding just makes you feel ALIVE doesn't it! Nice way to let off steam too from work, kids whatever.

Have everything crossed bike & me will be ok for the KCR but I will definitely have to head back on the Sunday afternoon.

Dave - hope your health allows you to make it - I'm coming back on Sunday PM as well - we may get to ride back together eh

That would be an absolute pleasure mate!!! Seems like we haven't ridden together for a VERY long time, mad huh?!

Am gonna rest my neck & back as much as poss. Just gotta sort front wheel wobble, put indicators on and replace weakened riser main bolt & DR is good to go! I'll be skint on the ride but have child care sorted for Fri, Sat + Sun til evening Sun thx to mother - hoorah! Gotta sort that front wheel wobble tho - at 110kph it is BAD!

Should get to pick up new Arai Tour X3 Long Way Blue helmet tomorrow!!!!! It matches the DR - sad aren't I?!!!!!!!!!! Insurance company payout + cash from ex for next weeks child care while she in OZ will pay for it fortunately and I'll have a nice new very safe helmet!

Is it carbon all the way through? If so, try and avoid sliding down the road in it. I've seen articles about the fine particles of carbon that get ground off cf helmets, bodywork and the like by being ground off against the road surface and being inhaled by the crasher. Potentially like inhaling asbestos fibres, for all the good that does you.

my bikes home.
all fixed.
as far as suzuki can tell, cam chain hasn't been running on the chain guide correctly, and finily gave up.
snaped the chain, bent a couple valves, chewed up a couple other parts as well.

Thanks heaps Suzuki for coming to the party.
cheers Dave Andersons for doing the repairs.

all good back on the gravel.

HAHA! That's a nod to my 5 & 3 yr old daughters who have "discovered" SpongeBob Squarepants and now HAVE to watch it on Sky, or a dvd of it, at every possible opportunity! So, yeah I DO feel like I am living in Bikini Bottom! And I have perfected the Spongbob laugh! ;)

This thread is about a dying DR.
Well mine didn't die over the weekend, but I discovered that it was planning to give me a bloody good reaming.
For nearly a year now, I have been running the same suspension setup that we took to Oz. It was set up for us by Robert Taylor and intended to do the job with 50+ kg of luggage on the back.
It's just too hard with only a little load on the back and I have been planning to talk to Robert about a softer spring for some time - that is until Jamie discovered that the standard spring will go on to the Ohlins shock.
So on a wet saturday, I set about doing the change.

I quickly discovered that the shock top-mounting bolt was sheared through at the base of the thread - clean as a whistle, complete bikini job. Both pieces were still in place, but the threaded portion was on an angle and had split the captive nut.

It was only a matter of time before it came loose and she tried to drive the end of an Ohlins up my date.

Now, I am quite fond of it, but there are limits.

Anyone else in DR land had this happen?

NordieBoy
4th May 2009, 09:05
Never heard of it before.
Weak bolt?
Hole in eye of shock too big (slop)?

The fit was pretty good and the break showed none of the progression signs of a typical fatigue fracture - it was a single, clean break.

My guess is that either the bolt was faulty or it has been overtightened at some point.

mY dr is alive again.
but i would like to up grade the rear shock, i find it very spongy,,,,

i have noticed that some DR springs are diferent colours.
and reason behind this.
my spring is red.
aslans is white.

is there a difference in springyness, if thats a word...is now..

Is the spring binding up on full compress before the wheel hits the guard? , cos that would load the bolt and with a big enough hit could shear it, especially if it is a hard bolt or has been work hardened from continuous hits.

Note to self: If riding a DR, stand up when it gets bumpy.

My stock spring was yellow.

They're all the same rate.

Get an Eibach spring on there for your weight and replace the 5w oil in the shock for some 10w shock (not fork) oil.
