Hello all,
1st post been reading the site for the last few weeks trying to learn as much as possible. I used to ride dirtbikes when I was younger then found cars were more fun.
Now my dilemma I want to get back into trail rides not hard out racing.. But fast enough to keep up with my mates. I'm 180cms and weigh about 90kgs, I have been looking at 125's and 250's.
Ideas I am throwing around at the moment..
1994 KDX200, 2000 CR125, 1998 YZ125, 1994 CRM250, 1999 CR250.
I know the CRM and KDX are a lil detuned for enduro etc, I also like the fact they require a little less maintenence. I have up to $2200 to spend so anything else you'd recommend I'd love to hear it
Thanks :)

Welcome to the Dirt Division mate.
I guess cars were more fun up until the long arm of the law reached into all our pockets for going over a 100k's an hour.:gob:
I'm about the same height and weight as you and I spent $2200 on a 93kdx250 which has served me really well over the last 16 mnths.I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis when I was 35 and had to drop a lot of activities due to pain etc.Hence why I didnt go out and buy a new bike as I wasnt sure if the sport was going to do any good or bad to my condition.50 trail rides later and I am thinking of a new bike.
One thing I must say about the kdx is that they are quite bulletproof and very easy to maintain. They also produced them for around 20 yrs so parts are plentiful.
Hope you find a bike soon and best of luck.

Well after looking into a particular bike a little more. The 1994 KDX200 is in fact a KDX200 engine in a 1993 KX Frame. Things are looking up :)

Is there much benefit in having the inverted fork? I thought all KDX from 1994 onwards had them. But most inbetween 1995 and 2000 dont seem to have them??

could be wrong but i don't think any KDXs have USDs. the one you're talking about may be in a KX frame or even just have a KX front end

Get the CR!!! KDX is ok, but it will bore you in about 2 weeks of riding it.
I now await stories about blah blah won some race on one out of the box blah blah.
A 125 is a bit too small for you.

I know this guy who had a kdx and he won etc..... j/k.
If you're wanting to do MX then don't get a kdx, get a MX bike.
I've had my kdx for > 2 weeks now and I'm not bored with it yet. Crazy huh!

Hey every now and again I get riders on my rides with KDXs- great little bikes but they have those damn forks and they get hung up in the rutted out sections and I mean really hung up!
If you ride in heavily ridden areas consider this cos I see guys going over the bars when they follow me into the slots :argh:

Thanks so far guys. Am learning a lot.. I wont be racing, just spirited trail rides with mates etc.. (I say that now, who knows in 6 months time haha)
Been looking round at KDX's so should have 1 of my cars sold soon then I can get out there and buy one :)

what he said
and also
are you trying to say that kdx's handle like a pig??? I'd agree last time I rode one out a woodhill it was like trying to pilot a shopping trolley full of logs round the tracks.
but hey, dont listen to a guy who has recently owned one and moved on to better things.... what would he know

Cave weta you mean the upside down forks? I dont plan on riding in forests too much. I think most of the rides round canterbury are trails or riverbeds..

I think he means the "conventional" forks. they tend to hang below the front wheel axle , so are more prone to catching on stuff. Obviously mainly in rutty conditions, or really rocky/rooty etc.

Keep your eyes out for a YZ250 you should be able to find one around your price range. The most fun Ive had on a two stoke was on a YZ

Just to bring this back up..
I had a ride on a 97 KX250 on friday, power or what it was amazing on pipe. It spat the current owner off quite badly on a forest run so def had to be careful haha
Sooo my search continues KDX is still a thought but am now entertaining CR YZ RM and KX 250's as well
Ride it till reds RM sounds quite good Hrmmm

Last week I finally took the dive..
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/picture.php?albumid=2665&pictureid=31400
Ended up with a 2005 KDX200, PC rev pipe and PC exhaust. Great service history and bike is in very tidy condition.
Many thanks to all those that suggested the KDX, suits my needs down to the ground. Took it out to mcleans island on sunday and all the old memories came flooding back.
Cant wait for summer rides now!
