ITS BULLSHIT , YA SHOULDA SEEN THE SPEED THEY WERE DOING. SO FAST INFACT THAT A COP ON A BIKE ALMOST GOT TAKEN OUT BY A WHITE HONDA CAR THAT DIDNT RELISE HOW FAST THEY WERE GOING. PRINCE OR NOT RULES ARE RULES I DONT THINK ANY MOTORCADE REGAURDLESS OF WHOSE ON BOARD SHOULD SPEED , GO THRU RED LIGHTS, HAVE ROLLING BLOCKS PERFORMED FOR THEM OR ANY SPECIAL TREATMENT.
AND I THOUGHT WE WERE SHORT OF POLICE BUT THEY SEEMED TO FIND 20 OR SO SPARE FOR THIS VISIT.
WHY DONT THEY JUST FLY CHARLES EVERYWHERE IN A HELICOPTER? HES A DIPSHIT ANYWAY AND I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR HIM OR ROYALTY.

Ah! there you are....... I was wondering where you were.

So I see that you have found another interesting topic to talk about ..........

Great I'm sure we need to discuss these things:
1. Cops are bad
2. Cops are bad
3. You are an anus
4. Cops are bad
5. Something about cops..........

Not as simple as that. (but I'm sure you know that)

The fact is, in the nasty world we live in, nutters will always want to take pot shots at big wigs no matter where or who they are just to get their name / cause in the head lines.

Senior diplomats, heads of state royals etc etc cannot sit in traffic with targets painted on their doors. The cost of the clean up should the unthinkable happen vastly out weights the minor hassle of a speedy motorcade.

Welcome to the 21st century

Mate - that would be pretty unlikely - they are very well organised.

We see them a lot here in wellie to and from the airport. It's no big deal.

Crown drivers have a defence against exceeding speed limits.

My office look over Fran Kitts Park in Wellington, so I see them go past quite a lot on the Quay. Doesn't seem to create that much disruption, pretty slick operation. And for the mitigation of risk of sitting in lights and the potential bad publicity, I say it is a good option.
Also, providing such a service for foreign diplomats etc. is good business I reckon.

I think Winja's helicopter idea could be a little more expensive than the current methods. And then it wouldn't necessarily be able to land whereever he was going, and probably need some land transportation anyway.

If you think these motorcades are crazy....... you should see the ones used to transfer diamonds from the mines to the transport planes in Southern Africa......

3-4 cars with guys with loaded M-16's and AK-47's who don't stop for nothing until the diamonds are delivered.... not even the pedestrians they hit.......which they do as they basically drive at twice the speed limit and use the bullbars on their SUV's to clear obstructions......

Well proven fact - motorcades are supposed to speed. Publicly demonstrated by Comrade Helen.

The motorcade has Diplomatic Immunity, doesn't it?
I believe inside the vehicle it is treated as sovereign British territory as in embassy grounds and such?

I'd pay a dollar to see Prince Chuckles in a mug shot, though...

I'd bet I'll probably know at least one of the cops involved in any lower north island motorcades. I agree with the principle of the motorcade, ie avoid stationary target for security reasons, rolling blocks on traffic/intersections, but I disagree with excessive speed or even speeding in general.

Fact is, if the Govt wants us to believe that by exceeding the speed limit we're gonna kill someone, how do they sanction a motorcade speeding? No matter who's in it or how bloody good they think their drivers are.

I'm not trying to have a dig at the 5-0 or anyone here, but it's contrary to Govt policy!

It has been argued many times on this site that those with superior riding/driving abilities should be able to travel at higher speeds than the rest.
While it might be difficult to separate out the general population, presumably the drivers in these motorcades would fit into that category?
No...no point really....

Thats fun to watch. Not the hitting pedestrians part though. The way these guys drive is amazing. They were obviously taught somewhere.

On Winja's note though. He makes a point but he isnt thinking of the bigger picture. These guys are trained on how to drive. They dont bugger around and no they arn't your average drivers. Those were B squad from the Royal British SAS. Dont ask me why I know, I wont tell you.

Anyway, I would feel pretty stupid if somehow a major diplomate was "eliminated" in my country. I wouldnt like to go around with the fact that we couldnt allow ourselves to protect the Prince of Godknowswhere. But at the same time, I dont like him so punish him if we can.

But I would also feel pretty dumb getting hit by a motorcade that makes a fuckload of noise, rides like a bat out of hell and has huge flashing lights going. Its like waking up in hospital and claiming that a fuck load of AWOL christmas trees got me.

Nice point though on your opinion Winja :niceone: Just stop writing in caps, get someone else to type for you

I think he has quite a valid point....at the end of the day are these rich, pompus, big eared, wankers lifes worth more than any1 elses?? if not why should they be allowed to speed? coz at the end of the day SPEED KILLS remember, no matter who you are.

Even if they traditionally don't respect everyone else? *evil grin* at ya, LiasTZ.

"You aren't allowed to speed unless you're a top-of-the-line trained driver" is a bit of a fuzzy interpretation of "You aren't allowed to speed as "speeders are killing us"." I wonder if it would have made a difference to that young Maori bloke on all the adverts if it was a speeding motorcade that had crossed the centre line and deep 6'ed his mother. Somehow I doubt it.

What about all of the other highly trained drivers out there. Got picked up when hitch-hiking by a guy called Steve Reynolds - it was written all over the race leathers he was wearing. He's presumeably a "highly trained rider" - does that mean there's some leeway in the law for him?

I know from research I've done that the driving courses that "Personal Protection Specialists" (bodyguards) take put them well above the average "dick in a cage" but the message given out is "there is one law for you and another for us" - whether it's His Royal Highness Prince Charles or Comrade Helen, it doesn't matter.

Like that MP caught reading a newspaper while driving (fair while back now) - if it were you or I, we'd've probably got a mess of Demerit Points and a hefty fine. I recall he got off.

After all, the Law does not apply to the law makers.

On a related note. While the "Law" might let the Diplomatically Immune get away with breaking the rules, it is not universal.

The time is back during Rob Muldoon's years as Prime Minister. My mother was a professional driver, had been most her life, and was at that stage holding down three jobs - taxis, Crippled Childrens' Bus and the Airport Shuttle (Hamilton).

She was on her Airport Shuttle job and pulled into the airport to find a car, complete with NZ flags and gummint plates occupying the clearly marked airport shuttle bus stop. She pulled in behind it, got out of the shuttle and informed the driver he was illegally parked and he was to move.

He informed her that he was waiting to pick up the Prime Minister and had no intention of moving - the rules, he felt, did not apply to him. Mum reiterated that he was breaking the law and it was her park and he reiterated that care, he did not.

Mum then basically said "Suit yourself, I'm going back to the bus and I'm going to park in this space whether or not you are in it." She went back to the bus, set it in gear and rolled forward...

Chauffeur fired up his engine and moved out, fast.

He parked in one of the public parks further away from the main gate and mum lit a cigarette (ah, the days before the "smoke-free workplace" policy), sat back and relaxed and grinned like the Devil as she watched the Rt Hon, Rob't Muldoon having to waddle down the footpath to his car.

Dunno if she'd have been as unforgiving if it had been a Labour PM...

A motorcade speeds...big fucking deal.
There is a strong puritanical streak in the New Zealand pysche that gives me the shits. If we stopped fucking whinging and got on with our own lives this country would be a better place.

As for the dipshit that started the thread - ain't you the plonker who brags about not stopping for the feds? If there's twenty cops with Chuck, you'll have less to run away from, won't you? Stop complaining and use the time to find the capslock key...

I was coming back from a job in Palmy and saw crown driver getting a ticket at Mana North of Wellywood. I guess the defence only carries if they have a crown passenger.

Hmmm, professional driver of a good number of years' standing who once did the ton on the Wellington motorway because some fare was freaking her out with "hypothetical questions"... Would she give a govvy car a nudge? Probably do it without leaving a mark on either vehicle (wouldn't be the first time she'd push started one car with another). She was certainly in the right mood to, so far as I could tell.

Sadly, some time later a drunk shot the red at the Victoria St/Ulster St junction and cleaned out her cab as she was U-turning onto the taxi rank (which, since the lights were red, she should have been able to do safely). Smashed her knee and she couldn't drive any more - lost three sources of income that day. Dad was in the cab behind her, also waiting to turn, saw the whole lot. To cap it off, the drunk got out of his car and abused the shit out of her.

Wish I'd been there.

/me smacks fist into palm meaningfully.
