Cnut Hill is behind/above Sutherlands Hut

this will be a bitch - a steep long hillclimb with base ball sized rocks.

We need to do this to prove we don't suffer from KTM disease (shriveled pecker syndrome) or the BMW blight (pillow biter syndrome) or the Truimph Tragedy (nothing at all down below)

We'll demonstrate that while we might have very little up top - we are well equipped down below :wari:

ride whatever you want - I'll be on the DT230 and still be shitting myself

If we get to the top there is an awesome track to follow out to the coast - then we can either return the way we came or (if Joe gets the key) go out to the coast and ride around to the Lake Ferry pub for sustenance.

There will be a visit or two to Toppys - that goes without saying

I would strongly recommend....

Knobbies/rimlocks
lowered gearing
body armor/knee pads
strong religious beliefs

who's stoopid enough to come?

Well you know me - always stupid enough to push the envelope! :crybaby:

My schedule is now a regular Saturday free from kiddie duty so I have no excuse but to come do I?!!!!!!!!!!!

I found it pretty darn challenging on the KLX so should be good for another $1000 or so reduction in value on the DR! :gob:

I'M IN MATE!!!!! :2thumbsup

sorry - the light dawns slowly on this greying head

yes I meant retarded in the derogatory sense not the intellectually disabled sense - possibly a poor choice of phrase

I thought calling the intellectually disabled 'retarded' was regarded as offensive - hence freeing up the term to use for DR riders

perhaps a vigilant mod might revise the heading to avoid causing additional offense....

in that video, the track is clean, and quite passable.

last time bart, andymac, paladin, and my self, tryed to get up, there where rocks as big as footballs all over the track, and deep as well, we just couldnt get a clean line and keep traction.

so its no wonder she got up. the roads clean.
once a year 4x4 club takes a bulldozer in and clears the road.

I enjoyed these videos but they don't do justice to just how steep that hill is.
The camera flattens the slope, notice when the big KTM lifts the wheel at the bottom & the 125 midway they both have to button off or flip.

Also very scary is the fact on the right side is a scrubby 1.5m berm then a 150m+ drop.

I confess last time I was very pleased to get up the first part intact. When I saw Cnut hill I walked it & just knew I was never going to get up. And would have done some serious damage to the bike trying to turn around & come back down.

Probably would do the same again but happy too watch the brave attempt it. And if all others made it up :gob: I would have to give it a go :crybaby:

:angry2: Now HTFU! John Boyle & friends have taken road bikes including a 650 traffic cop bike up this hill. But they took a very long coil of rope & pulled the f**kers up.:lol::lol:

You guys are making me a bit noof naffy just thinking about that hill, even though I know deep down i would not make it and probly crash and then spend 10 minutes cursing the weight of the klr as I lug it round to try to get down again, then spend another 20 minutes cable tieing shit back on so the bike is rideable for another bash.
Excuse me while I go to the bathroom and think about this one.

junkmanjoe
14th April 2009, 22:53
its not a nice piece off road from the get go.
as soon as your on it, pretty much stright up, pick the best line and dont stop, have to go from side to side to avoid a big water rutt on middle of track.
and thats just getting to cnut hill.

pampa
15th April 2009, 21:13
I'm tempted ... at least to go and see it by myself from the base of the hill :(:buggerd:

bart
15th April 2009, 21:47
As Joe said. The first part is a very long, steepish uphill section. Not that difficult, but if you make one little mistake, you really have to go back the bottom and start again.

Things then flatten out for quite a way, until you get to the real beast. The problem I had was that I couldn't hold enough speed through the bottom left hand corner, to keep momentum up the real steep rocky bit. Lower gearing will certainly help. We may also need to wander up the hill and flick some of the larger rocks to the side.

Can't wait. :headbang:

I'm still up for going back BUT with head screwed on! Maybe the DR with the D606's could make it, I dunno but am up for going and having a look and deciding on the day based on how wet the hill is, what shape the real bastard one is in etc etc!

Presuming I'm in some kinda shape to ride of course haha!

Mark, I just started physio on my back today and TBH after the treatment my back farkin hurts like hell so not sure I will be on the ride up cnut hill, but if i am I reckon I'll be doin the easy option of into Sutherlands Hut or in from the Ngawi side if Joe gets the key sorted. Physio reckons I shouldn't be in too bad shape by the time the NI Invasion ride comes around but anything sooner I will be playing by ear! Her words were... "you're not riding your bike offroad right now, are you?"!!! My plan is to stay focused on being as fit to ride as I can for the trip to the SI and not worry too much about now til then ride wise as I REALLy don't want to miss the SI ride!
Apparently there's alot of shock trauma in my spine in the T3-5 area(? forget exactly what numbers she said but its that whole area between the shoulder blades ish!) thats adding to the problems with the deep tissue trauma, in fact she found some damage in areas left of my spine where i didn't realise there was any! I think physios get some kinda sick thrill from seeing you jump when they dig their fingers into a damaged location!

I'll trailer trash my bike down to Martinborough, as the things going to be geared that fooking low, it'll probably only do 60. :woohoo:

Perhaps we can split into two groups - those with big balls who try and go up cnut hill and those with little shriveled pea sized balls go via the coast entrance and ride in and hopefully meet us in the middle somewhere (or find our bloodied corpses spread part way up the hill).

Time permitting it would be great to do the beach bit to the Lake Ferry pub.

Yeah - I'm going to throw the worn 18/120 knobbly off the WR on the DT and maybe try and get a 13T front instead of the 14 that's on there (Stock is 16). So I'll be probably trailering to Martinborough.

OK, maybe I'm taking this thing a bit seriously.

Slapped a half rooted knobly on the back this afternoon. Drilled the rounded knobs for more traction (might be a wives tale, but I heard somewhere that you can get more life out of a knobly by drilling holes in the knobs). Was tempted to put a full offroad tyre on but the road miles will rip the tred off.

Now geared at 13/48 (standard is 14/48, but I usualy run 14/41 or 15/41).

Might go for a full knob front. I'll see what the weather looks like. The goal is to get up the hill anyway, who cares about coming back down. ;)

If we don't have much luck, we can all have turns ripping up and down the hill on my thing. :woohoo:

if the river is in flood on the coast side we wont be able to get through.
as there is a lot of clay in the vally, water will be dirty and we wont be able to tell the depth.

even the creeks on the other side at bottom of southerland hutt valley will be up. as we have had, and going to have a bit more rain before sat and looks like showers on sat as well.

im to ring rod ( key holder ) friday night and let him know if we still want the key.

but..entry is at rider risk and 4x4 club takes no responsablity for any harm or damage to rider or bike.
I have to sign a form stateing we understand the risks of entry.

if the river is in flood on the coast side we wont be able to get through.

Yep, all joking around aside Mark, if this weather keeps up, it would be good to take stock and consider an alternate plan. If the rain keeps hammering down like this thru to Saturday, its gonna be pretty nasty on cnut hill and as Joe said, the river crossings might get real interesting! Good that Joe has managed to sort a key tho, gives options at least!

I'm still planning on coming at this stage but will be trying to keep it sensible on my back. The only caveat is: the physio today decided she was very unhappy with my back's response to treatment & is concerned i may have some kinda compression fracture(s) in my spine & is sending me for thoracic spine x-ray tomorrow in the morning - so keep ya fingers crossed for no fractures! If there are fractures, they are not gonna be major otherwise I would actually be in even more pain than I am apparently! Small mercies etc!

I'm a non-starter for any offroadin before the SI trip. Had thoracic spine x-ray this morning, got a minor fracture(hairline compression fracture) in vertabrae in upper back between shoulder blades! Not major and should be healed in 6 weeks ish from date of accident, with rest(!), so am goin on the Invasion ride BUT I gotta be a good boy til then! Only downside is it restricts what physio can do treatment/work wise on the other damaged areas until its all healed cos she has to avoid aggravating the fracture area, but she reckons SI trip should be a goer if i rest as much as poss til then; might still have some muscular pain on that ride but a couple of HTFU pills each day on the trip and I'll be fine! ;)

Yeah I know what you mean, but don't worry, I'm basing coming on the SI trip on what the physio said to me today and am not just being a gung ho idiot, honest. The only caveat is if something between now & then happens to bugger that fracture more, but I am gonna rest as much as poss, definitely no offroadin, try hard to drive & ride as little as poss too, as lookin over my right shoulder is an issue - it strains down through the problem areas! The problem with trying to rest is of course having a 3 & 5 yr old in the house half the week and an ex-wife who doesn't drive which leaves me doing the shuttling around of my daughters!

See physio tomorrow and she said the back will probably be getting taped up again to try support the area around the fracture as well. If the physio is correct, by the time the SI ride comes around I should only be carrying the remains of the muscular/tendon/ligament type injuries as that will be 6 weeks post accident. Fingers crossed anyway! Oh and will see if doctor can give me different pain medication - the Diclofenac doesn't seem to be cutting it as i am just in pain all day that builds as the day goes on - hence Monday night after physio I spent almost the entire evening lying on my back on the floor and had to take a sedative to be able to get to sleep - not good!

Pouring down and roads and public transport under siege. Aotea Quay is full of sirens and stopped cars. Aside from adding the additional discomfort of requiring wet weather gear be worn while actually struggling up the hill, I don't think it will make any difference whether it rains or not during the ride tomorrow. The ground will be saturated and rivers dirty and high - rain or fine.

At this stage I am not keen (about doing this this weekend).

What good timing to have had the R100RS rego stop come to an end this week! Winter is here.

Signing off now and heading down to the Vespa to brave the rain home (only 3 km!).

I would think South Island Invasion will be an ideal opportunity to put in place an alternative plan for this hill. One that is flexible enough to be able to react to good or bad weather in the lead up to an opportunity?

If next weekend (as I originally suggested) suits you guys better I will leave it till then

might just do Odlins Rd on Sunday

MARKS I'm keen for Odlins Rd, but can't do Sunday, how about Saturday arvo?

Not sure about Cnut Hill the following weekend yet. My old AA map shows 2 tracks (new AA maps no longer show vehicle tracks) going from Ruakoputuna & Haurangi Rds thru to the Pinnacles. Presume Cnut Hill is the southern track? Maybe best to try the northern track which continues on past sutherlands hut?
And theres also a track between Haurangi/Clay Rd to Range/White Rock Rd.

Could some nice North Islanders please put a link up for Google Earth Odlins rd & Cnut hill?
thanks.

Oh & from the sounds of it it is very clayey? Many rocky tracks or is clay the usual base.

Off topic but heard part of a interview with a Kiwi going to Bonneville & he described the salt as being a cross between sand & ice - his bike was still wheel spinning at 200MPH!

cunt hill is like, the track that went down to the lake we went on, quite steep.
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Cape+Palliser+Rd&daddr=&hl=en&geocode=FZ6dh_0d55txCg&mra=mr&sll=-41.445943,175.218458&sspn=0.025027,0.038581&ie=UTF8&ll=-41.438528,175.334255&spn=0.006257,0.009645&t=h&z=17

can see the hut at top of page and the start of the track is the one winds up the bottom of the page

this next pic is the section named cunt hill.
it runs along beside this slip, this is where two d.o.c workers where killed a while ago, and is now why doc only lets 4x4's in from the coast end.

The hill's not too bad. Loose rocky surface makes it a challenge. I'd imagine the surface changes by the season.

I am a starter for this expedition.

Unfortunately Thunderbird 2 (Combo van) broke its clutch cable turning into Courtney Place on Wednesday night. White knuckle ride home and then into the city dealer Friday morning without a clutch! A week to get a new one so I hope I don't have to ride the Pampera all the way to and from Wellington for this ride. Was hoping to park up at Toppy's and unload there.

Will keep an eye on this thread to see how arrangements develop.

The Hard Cocks - those attacking cnut hill the way it was meant to be done - Straight up from the front. - wear some item of blue clothing.

Maybe an alternative for the hill ride...
Bit of plan forming with me for sunday, no matter what the weather;)
Meet either in Waikanae at 9.30 for a cruise up the akatarawas to the summit, or at the Akatarwa summit if your coming from that side of the hills, then Odlins road as far as the hut. I'm keen to see how far we can get towards Otaki forks also (I've got a map!!!)
If no further than the hut then a route back to Pram via the karapoti track if the rivers arent too high.
Ability not important - couple of novices amongst us, no bike too small, and we're all on road based tyres so come and join us for a grin...
So far 3 definate's with me, welcome to join us.
I'll put this also on the wellington ride outs thread.

Maybe I'll finally put a 14T on the front too LOL!

I think you've hit the core issue on the head

The DT would go up cnut if I lower the gearing about 10%-20% more (its already running a 14T front instead of 16T stock) but that will make the bike unpleasant on the road at 100k.

I think there are only 2 types of bikes that will get to the top with average riders.

1/ Trail bikes
2/ Adventure bikes that are geared down to the point where it compromises their ability to cruise at 100k.

In my book - an adventure bike that will not cruise comfortably at 100k is not an adventure bike - its a trail bike with lights.

I would not enjoy riding the DT230 300km to and from cnut if the gearing was any lower.

my son and I are discussing throwing our trail bikes on a trailer and spending a day attacking that damn hill.

Bloody sore this morning. The 650 takes a bit to throw around. I actually doubt I would have got as far on the DRZ. Not enough torque, and like Mark says, it would have to be geared down that far you might as well call it a dirt bike.

Rear is totally bald down the middle now, after Sundays awesome but tough ride!
I've ordered a new rear with a bit more bite, a Vee rubber something or other - dunno for sure but it was more like 50-50 instead of 70 - 30 (or 100 - o at the moment!) like the snail-wings.

Reckon I could leave the old one one for another week or two just to give your pride a bashing:crybaby:

Maybe knock the top off with the new tyre slung over my shoulder and tyre levers in my pocket:rockon::gob:

Nah - probably fit it this week and stop Bullshitting:yawn::Oops:

C'mon Joe talk it up and make it sound real bad  :D

We drove over Sutherlands track in May, we actually lost a vehicle over the side which wasn't good, did ya spot the new widened and cleared spot cruising along the top :gob:

Drove through no worries, would love to have a crack at the hill on the bike.

you'd eat it up no problem Gav, it's rock heaps of traction, just better fitness and little more attack speed is required, my down fall... this time

It was only metaphorical poo at least!
Although attacking the final climb could result in something entirely different!

Hey Woody! Wonder what these pussies would think of the Havlock Pylon Track :D

I have been both up and down this on the Pampera a few years ago. It was badly rutted in places but unless it has deteriorated markedly I do not recall it being as steep or loose as CNUT hill appears.

Perhaps the South and North Islanders could organise fraternal/reciprocal visits? For scientific purposes.

its mostly lack of run up and heaps of big lose rock..and momentum runs out quickly,, it be on par with the hill section that went down to the lake down there, um, oh cant remember what its called, but add heaps more big rocks all over it..

take the steepest part of the south side of the Poirika. Put a few thousand loose baseball sized rocks on it and stretch it out about 200m.

A good rider on a bike with good suspension could charge it and get up fine. An average rider on a bike with average suspension could probably grunt up providing their gearing was low enough (ours wasn't).

My mate (who's an above average rider) rode my WR450 to the top (2nd gear and nailed it) last time I was there.

Obviously were milking the hill for all its worth to 'impress the natives'

As Mark said, a good rider on a dirt bike would piss up it. You need lots of suspension and momentum.

With our type of bikes, you need a little bit of luck. You have to pick your track carefully and zigzag up the clear sections. One mistake, and you end up amongst the big rocks, drop to the seat, and risk flipping or getting spat off the side of the track.

Gimme another go...........
