View Full Version : Jolly Roosta Trail Ride, Woodhill 26th April
Ktmboy
14th April 2009, 16:58
OK guys and girls, On Sunday the 26th April is the annual Jolly Roosta (Jolly Poacher last year) trail ride half way to South Head.
This is a cool ride. Everything you get at other rides (do they have farm and forestry?) through out the central north island but at under half the price.:woohoo: And its under 1 hours drive from 90% of Auckland.
We've got a whole heap of new terrain that has been pruned and marked over the last couple of weeks. Non of this "lets re arrow the old tracks" stuff here. You pay for a ride and we'll ensure you get fresh tracks everytime!!
I ran out of fuel on the quad on the weekend after 70km so will be selecting the best course of about 50-60km. Whats more there is minimum gravel road (maybe a couple of hundred metres) on the single track red course.
Sign on is from 8.00am:gob: and the tracks close at 3.00pm. So in essence you can get the last loop in from 3.00pm and finish at 5.00pm.
Jeez, thats 9 hours riding time for 35 bucks. Beats paying the same price for 4 x 15mins motos. Value for money in anybodys book.

Yeah, I know,we've had this on www.silver-bullet.co.nz for a few months now. It was always going to be the last weekend of April.
I have the son that wants to ride at Kens as well. Thems the breaks. Blessed for riding choices ain't we?

A smorgasboard!!
Most people will be OK on the single tracks. The yellow tracks are very user/quad friendly so access is no probelm. If you don't like the track, easy get off after a km or two and jump on another one. The reds always will have a go round option.
Yeah, I'm excited about this ride. There are some great sections. Unfortunately, the big climbs from last year have been felled but we have a very special place for you to play in. I'll take a pic later in the week. Be prepared.

Well, this will be who provides the masses with the best entertainment.
It may turn into the Hill climb comp on the day depending on the weather.
If its fine then we'll have the Hill climb. Its rather large.
If raining (remember Woodhill gets better with rain) then its the best entertainment on a couple of laps on the figure of 8.

The stream comes out of the base of the hill.
A couple of tea tree to clear out of the road first though.

This hill is real steep. The owner reckons we should park the ambo at the bottom.
I guarantee no one would make it up. In fact if you could make it down you would be a legend.
It looks like it flattens out, not, it gets steeper.

Well basically the whole of Woodhill forestry, all 28 miles of it, is one big sand dune, so, yes its sand based. But its also raining at present and will do for the next 5 days so, fingers crossed its fine on Sunday.
Doesn't matter though as more rain the better.

Tracks go on and on and on and no road sections - yeha!! Great parking, none of this parking on the side of the road stuff, green grass! Oh yeah, toilets, there's a flushing toilet and about 6 others! All important stuff to us girls!!!

Its a trail ride. Meaning that we cater for all. I did the yellow loop on the quad and you can quite easliy drive a 4x4 around whilst in 2wd. The yellow worked out at about 45k with home options at 8k and 18k marks.
The farm track is 6k and there is a grass peewee track. Heres a link to a few hi lites from last year.

Non really. Red on this ride really just signifies single track. There are a couple of little bits to test the better riders but they have a yellow bypass.
Yellow is fast open. I mean top gear fast.

and I have a much better camera this year........
If anyone wants to get in my way so they can be imortalised on Youtube or wants a few minutes of footage of them riding come and say hello.
The old boy that i generally ride with has not been keeping up to date with his maintenance so I might be looking for someone to ride with this Sunday. Someone as old fat and slow as me.
I have a nice easy to find red Toyota van.........

Real good, big improvement. Still getting used to the difference, major one is the power when it comes on pipe  . The gearing seems very tall coming from a 6speed, hard to get out of 2nd as i'll be going too fast . Torque is awesome can lug sweet and getting up hills much easier. Seems about same weight as kdx, maybe notice the bigger size in the tight bits. Suspension good, much smoother but gotta change the springs sometime.
Seems good to workon, like the no tools airfilter access, sparkplug pretty hiden tho

Damn, missed this event. Just didn't get to ride.
Lucky I was just lottering and stumbled on FlyingCR250 having probs.
I wish the other breakdowns were that easy. 3 wally's ran out of gas and you guessed it, they were right at the furtherest point.
You'd think they would fill up at the start wouldn't ya.
3 of the staff had big offs despite the briefing to ensure they all stay in one piece.
One of them on my bike which now needs (oddly enough) a new throttle cable, head light etc .
One of our riders is in a pretty bad way after a head on with a tree. Broken ribs, punctured lung, broken wrist, whip lash, a absolutely munted collar bone and a suspect spleen.
We all hope he gets well soon as well as the other two whom both have wrist injuries.. Big ups to St John.
If fact we hope the other couple of injured people recover quickly as well.

the reds at the far end after the clear fell were great was great bounceing off the mini hills amongst the trees especialy the cool runnings section lots of big drops was a bit strange at the end though track just disapeared and ended up on a road.

Boy, that was a fun ride. Possbily one of my favourite ever! Was sort of like regular sandpit mixed with desert storm. fav bits were some of the faster forest bits and the reds. One-timed all the log crossings, was stoked. Getting much better at handling the new bike, and the tank and newly shaved seat worked great, being able to use my feet a couple times probably saved me from some spills. Also, big ups to people that helped me out when I got stuck ...:innocent:

Once again a great ride
cheers

Hey there Oldskool!
They were Buffy and Gina that stopped and helped Jinxy Cat. When he's out of the hospital get him to drop me a line and I'll give him their mobiles or something. I'll let Greg from Spectrum know today. Jinxy Cat sure looked in some pain. Hope he's feeling better today!

we sat at the top and watched people trying to get up for a while after we packed up, a few different techniques used
you guys were probably one of the last to go, only ever saw your group there once. so did you do 3 full laps or 4? :woohoo:

Man I'm feeling it today! My back is sore and stiff!
That was a great ride. I actually went through that bit where everyone broke collar bones. I must have just missed the bit that was catching people!! lucky! I had a few near big spills at the start too. just before the downhill to the muddle (love that term) there was some tree root that just a bout tossed me over the bars twice!!
The forest loop was wicked. The reds were way better than the yellows. The yellows got whooped out really bad and the reds were much more fun.
Really good ride though. Lots of different tracks and good wide tracks so you didn't get stuck behind people.
Good to catch up with a few KBers.
Oddly enough, my bike did have stale fuel! LOL After the first tank I filled it up again with fresh stuff and the front wheel wouldn't stay on the ground!!! haha!!

mint ride, big thanks to Tony and all involved.
The whoops had me ruined by the end as they got huge in some places. Loved the reds though, they bermed up and got better through the day, knew they'd be good after riding some of the new ones at the sandpit. Had a very close call on that root between the trees on the farm loop, somehow manged to stay on but twisted my knee.
you forgot to clear a path for the hillclimb, had to hesitate and drop down to third before nailing it.

You could see the poor bugger (Jinxycat? in the manuka trees near the start) was in a lot of pain. Hope he feels better quick. Morphine is great stuff, but it will still be a while before that bike gets run in.
Thanks for all the work KTMboy and posse.
I've been trying to figure out how those nifty steep little sand mounds form up, they don't seem like natural dunes. Anyone know the deal with those things?

Yeah Jinxycat sure did look in some pain! He's keen. When he's better we'll all have to meet up at Woodhill to help him ride his bike in and keep him away from the tree stumps! Thanks Dea for the update! Is the bike looking better than he did?

Thanks JT, I'm quite impressed with the wide angle, just puts yah in there more. Now I just have to get as quick as you to keep up with the gang! I rode that YZ250F and really liked it, so much more control than the KX, you can go faster have more fun and work less harder. I loved popping wheelies and doing little jumps at will on it. Best of all you didn't have to be in the right gear all the time.

The original looks better. Yeah makes faces look like talking eggs ay. Plenty good enough for what I have in mind, and if I go further with it then yep would have to upgrade into something higher spec'd with much higher shutter spd and more frames per second.
ya im doing my head in now weather to drop the cr for a new crf rode one last weekend and liked the forstroke seemed to have just as much power and corner better Yeah, I've always had a soft spot for 4's, getting the KX was a cheap option to see if I would get back into the sport. I wouldn't need to get fit if I got a 250 4T, and I think I would enjoy it even more. I reckon they corner better too, heaps of traction which the 2 stroke loses.

Actually when I helped you on one of those gnarly hills and started it up for yah I did notice the lever was angled down a bit so your foot just kinda slips off it before you can give it a good kick. Maybe it's something you need to look at?

I haven't noticed it's bent or anything, but it wouldn't surprise me, the rear brake lever is all yanged out. It's a horrible little lever regardless. I've heard of people bodging on 125 ones cause the stock ones are a bit crap.

Bike faired alot better than he did, only broke a spoke, punctured tyre and ? bent rim possibly forks out of allignment too, will give him something to do when he gets out.
He is in theatre now, just found out they doin all external scaffolding which means no rod, and he can ride quicker :)
Riding lessons oops I mean a catch up at woodhill will be just the ticket, no stumps involved.

Yea getting back into riding, had a major op myself 6 weeks ago, so now thinkin about gettin a lowering kit and running the WR in myself, he would be soooo pleased not. Cases of the Man Flu are bad enough I am suspecting this will be terminal :) As long as he has access ti his man cave I think he will be fine.

Well, I sort of haven't really been able to be back on here for the last couple of days as its been rather busy. We decided to level the complete farm track and re grass it all for the farmers as previous users have just used it, paid a small amount of koha and left.
Generally a fairly good day with close to 450 riders all up. No Council, neighbour issues this time round (we ain't going away) so its all good. Apart from the one dick that decided to remove the signs at the end of the road. Next year we'll put a freakin guard on it with a shot gun.
We've also learn't a few lessons (as you do) as we are fairly new to running these events. We've purchased a bully(no, not one to harrass the locals) but a D3 type with a 4 in 1 bucket.
Most of Woodhill is young (under 15yrs) and at 10-12 years old they thin to waste the trees. Meaning they take out every 2nd tree and just fell it and leave it on the ground.
This is a new method as before they used to take these trees away for posts and strainers. This means we now have to chain saw thru them to put a new track in. A very time consumming exercise. So next year we will put the dozer through and try to make new yellows (especially the access tracks) to cope with rider numbers. For those of you that didn't do the reds they were great.
The bully will also be used at the Kawasaki Sandpit to make and maintain the MX track, new MX track and to clear the clear fell in certain areas.
Glad that Jinxycat and our 3 staff are alive, albiet a tad sore. But, hey thats riding.
The good news is that we can continue to use the farm for a few more events.Wouldn't a two man starting and ending from there be cool.
At least you'd get to see some racing as a spectator.....hmmm thinkin...
Thanks to all that helped on the day, in the emergency room, the kitchen, sign on, around the tracks etc etc. You know who you are:yes:

Hi Dea / Jinxycat hope hes doin fine. Not a prob re. the help on the bale, what goes around comes around I say. When I did my knee in it was 2 blokes hanging out in the forest with me for hours on end waiting for the ambo.
Have to say, it may have been a pretty "nothing" crash, but the way that leg wrapped around the tree and sling shot that boot off... I was feeling queezy for hours. Perhaps for your next ride, a pair of braces wouldnt go amiss... :-) At least your pants are in one piece - the ambo lady and I had a bit of a "disagreement" about that one as I had a swiss army knife... But noooo she had obviously had a few riders complain about the treatment of the gear in the past (including me)!
How you doing anyway? My husband broke his femur and had to get a rod put in, no where near as bad I know but those legs take awhile and yep Dea your right, its like a man flu only 100 times worse! But you'll be riding in no time and running that beast in. Again thanks to Buffy and the others for stopping and helping. Needed a lot of people just to slow some idiot riders hell bent on flying through the trees past an accident with me yelling blue murder at them ha ha. Yes it was me, you know who you are....
Re the ride, the forest loop was the best I reckon, but then again I hate whoops with a vegence so the yellow was hell for me. I really enjoyed the day, after my adrenaline calmed down that is. So thanks to the organisers.
Went riding with Buffy, Justin and a few others incl. my husband to Woodhill Moto Park on Sunday, was a blast! Recommend to anyone. Well groomed and lots of good tracks. A+++ Trade-Me Rating.
