dangerous
14th April 2009, 19:31
On Saturday 18th April there will be a Golightly Insurance Training Day at Ruapuna raceway and is open to all makes, models and all levels of experience.

Training will be given by Mainland Riding School.

Briefing 8:30am

On track 9:00am

Costs:

For Golightly Insurance customers $20.00

Non Golightly Insurance customers $40.00

Bring your own lunch. There might be a charity fund raising sausage sizzle.

Remember this is a Training day NOT a race day. This is a great opportunity to learn some new skills or just brush up on some old ones.

Cheers Dangerous,

Sounds like this is just what I need (apart from shitloads more riding time). As long as I can get some seals for my bastard brakes, I'll be there...

Shit, just remembered I'm working...hmmm, might have to start crazy early so I can get there in time:eek5:

So... not being a track day there are no special requirements like taped up lights / one piece gear / bar end caps and shit?

How long does it run for?

Suzi Q
14th April 2009, 21:03
it will riun till about 4pm. I would be prepared to tape up lights and mirrors as this is a safety feature - don't want glass or plastic on the track if -heaven forbid-you crash. Not sure about leathers. You do need to contact either street and sport or david golightly directly to let them know you wish to attend as they need to know numbers.

I just spoke with David Golightly and he has said that he will not alow racers on the track for this, it is a ROAD RIDING training day. There is no need for leathers, just wear what you would normally wear on the road, BUT no shorts and tshirts or jandals!!!!! Must be proper riding gear.

phoenixgtr
16th April 2009, 14:25
Well he needs to talk to David at Street & Sport then cause I've been told it would be absolutely fine for me to turn up on my bucket. I understand it's not a race day but a road riding training day, but: 1. my road bike isn't insured on the track, and 2. I'm trying to learn to ride my bucket.

Your road bike would most likely be insured on the track (for training purposes) if you contact your insurance company in advance. If you are already with Vero it's a given.

He probably doesn't need to talk to anyone anywhere, as it is his organised training day then what he says goes

Your road bike may be covered for the track as it is a "training day" you would have to check with your insurer

Suzi Q
16th April 2009, 14:55
I have spoken with Phill at Street and Sport and he has reiterated to me his understanding is that it is a road rider training day, this is not a day to get track time to prepare for racing and he will get dave to call dave.
My understanding is that there will be training given in different aspects of riding and oppertunities to pracitce but it is not a race training day, there are proper race training days usually 1 per year around november and you can go out to the track on Tuesdays and fridays for more track time.
I have taken my road bike to the track for many events - training days and track days and have a go days - and I have never been covered by insurance. If you ahve your bike insured by Vero through David Golightly then you will have insurance for saturday.

phoenixgtr
16th April 2009, 16:02
Ok ok. I just didn't like being told yes and then no. My road bike isn't insured at the track at all. I've tried before for a previous training day and they said no. Have been looking at changing insurance companys and have been calling David Golightly but seem to keep getting an answering machine.

For the record, I wasn't intending to use this day as race practice, but rather as training for my riding like everyone else. I just wanted to do it on my race bike as I don't care if I dump it. I'm predominantly a road rider

Mint day, but my brakes and I were pretty tired by the end of it.
Including the rear brake lever, not quite top spec anymore...

Anyone have photos? I also saw a photgrapher out there, where would those pics be?

The camera belonged a guy called Chris, was driving one of the Harley's.

Not sure if he has put up the pics yet, they'll be on

i had an awesome day, plenty of track time. It was great to see Harleys on the track!!!!!!
I hope the 2 guys who came off are OK, it sounds like the Hayabusa guy has some serious injuries. it just shows you what can happen at 70kms when braking.
I backed myself and went into the experienced group with rashika, we had a good group but boy they wanted to go fast!!!! I learnt lots about lines, more about braking, and I must practice using 2 fingers instead of all 4!!!! I also need to look further ahead and trust that the bike will end up in the right place!
Thanks Kiwiphoenix for the link to the photos, 19 pages of cool photos.

I'm the other guy who came off, fractured wrist. Guess that's one of the less serious injuries one can get on a bike.

What a BLAST that WAZ:eek::eek:
180 Ks on the track. Learnt lots.
Love the thing that there nothing coming the other way, you have the entire road to find a fastest line and there nothing on the track like rocks sheep horse cars or :Police: :Police:
The bike went Fab didn’t miss a beat, love the sound of the air box rowing as you get up RPMs, “she’s made for the track”. New EBC Rotors Sweet, Pirelli Diablo held on, well most of the time rear lost some traction a few times coming out of some of the corners not a problem through.
Found that there are places on the bike to rest and set your knee as you hang off, tank is a good shape you can embrace
Couple of moments Fixation is a hell of a thing.
Came into the right hand corner out of the hairpin after passing someone a bit HOT :eek5: started looking at the rumble strip instead of into the corner, made myself turn my head away from the off and to where I wanted to go and what do you know the bike just followed AWESOME what a rush.
All in all awesome day thanks for your words of encouragement Helen and Phoenix. Still Smilling Just
Only downer to the whole day was coming home up the old west coast road.
Three cars do about 80kph had a look around to see what’s up seemed fine one other cars on the road at the time, indicated to pass, pulled out the lead car starts speeding up a tad think not going to play with these turkeys’ speed up a bit more pass and continue to put some distance between me and them, then on come the lights,:Police: Crap Crap.114 kph 20 points $80 and all the cop has to say is bad luck. He would of let me off if I was pregnant or had cut my finger half off with a log splitter Crap Crap CRAP
Has this sort of thing happened to any of you guys?
Do you know if it is a common practice?
I’m gutted

So the police car was doing 80 km/h and then sped up when you went to pass him - effectively forcing you to either exceed the speedlimit to complete the manouver or abandon the manouver and squeeze back into the group of vehicles?

Sounds like good grounds for a formal complaint.

Oh yeah - what a fucking cunt if that was indeed the case!

my 112 was like $140!

Yea that’s about it. Didn't know it was the mufti car until he pulled me up.
wasn't any cars behind me no cars coming the other way just the 3 in the group wasn’t the last one (first one I passed) don’t think it would have been the middle one as I didn’t notice it pulling out after me so think it must have been the lead car. Happened at 18:03 lights on.

Red Holden? as that was the same comment I got recently.

p/m SD and ask what you can do.

Now as a spectator for the day, you are doing really well. for the old beast you have ya on the case, keep it up.

Now... gota say, the day was run well, and it was good to see the HOGley familey out there wanting to learn how to ride beter, IMHO they need it the most and thats mainly due to have the least best handlers on the road ;)

From what I was told by Dave (the guy from Golightly) it was bruised ribs, a sore back and a busted shoulder. Maybe someone who knows him might be able to give us an update!

How are you feeling?? Hope the wrist heals quickly!:weep:

Good man BBzz - I hope you'll get some satisfaction in your case.

But yes, there seems to be a new red Holden mufty stationed on the Old West Coast road. Saw him yesterday as I went up towards Arthur's Pass and again today on my way back. Bloody land shark.

I spoke to David Golightly the other day and said how much we all enjoyed the day. He was pretty happy to get positive feedback about it and promises he will do more, with a possibility of one in August. Only a possible at present so just keep an eye out for it.
He did say he was sorry it was such short notice but they only got the track (someone cancelled) 4 days before the saturday.
So hopefully we will be able to get the word out earlier next time for those who missed it this time.
