View Full Version : Pillions up high on sportsbikes

Doesn't it cock up your handling? I would have thought the centre of gravity would be so raised that it would screw your handling, particularly at low speeds. Some bikes have the pillion up so high it just plain looks silly

Where else you gonna put 'em?

Yes, it cocks up the handling.

Next question?

well in pre-helmet days it was good if you had a buxom lass on the back and she could put one puppy on each of your shoulders to keep your ears warm in winter :D

Pillon seats are only put on sports bikes so you can get the go-ahead to buy one, fucked if i would let anyone get on it.

I imagine the only thing more painful than watching a pillion on a sprotsbike is being that pillion.

How else would you attract the ladies?

Having said that, sometimes they like being able to see whats coming. Other times it gives them the shits (and they wish they were looking at their reflection in your helmet)

And some don't even have one at all :(

 Think 'yoga in leathers perched atop a pole going warp speeds' and you're half-way there.

High centre of gravity isn't so much the problem as having a lot of weight out the back is. All that finely tuned setup goes completely out the window. :crybaby:

I see in Norway (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=97193) they are putting passengers on their laps :buggerd:

Notice the handling a lot more on the Gixer thsn on the SV1000 previously had, same pillion and very user friendly they are but on the Gixer you really notice every movement, looks pretty cramped too but the other option is'Don't come' this is the girlfriends chosen option.

Why do they put them up so high with the stepped seat? They never used to, used to be just one flat seat. It's not for swingarm clearance etc. either. Is it just a styling thing? Looks a bit silly, really.

Because on the more powerful bikes you tend to slide backwards under power. Stepped seat stops your arms stretching.

I've noticed a few of the perched pillions of late - by god they can be very very high.

I will admit at the pillion.. if I feel confident... I could sleep... if I don't I would be viewing... being that high is to me not riding... I like to at least be at one... rolling with the bends.. and feeling the moves of the road. Can't wait for the real thing!!! :2guns:

Also tends to keep one in check when on a bike thats so easily capable of silly speeds. Especially if they're able to see the speedo from above

Entirely a tuck down and hold the fark on situation :woohoo: Apparently the pillon in question raised her head to have a look at the speedo but found she was unable to lean forward and see, dumb shit with a pillon on board but before all the safety fiends crack on it was done with minimal risk, well pretty much as minimal as could be.

Pillions on my Daytona 675 fu*k the handling and make the bike a dog.

Pillions on the loaner Daytona 955i kick ass! You can get along at a decent speed, she doesn't get blown about or off the back AND you can still weave in and out of every second white stripe on the road at speed. Was bloddy impressed and finally see the point of the bigger Daytona.

I dunno... No complaints fom my pillion, apart from the fact that the seat needs to be a bit higher for her to see anything.:hug:

Quite like the 955i 2 up.... except for the extra tyre wear... mind you my 1999 does not have the really high pillion seat

Saw a couple on a GSXR last week on Queen St - the pillion was wearing a short skirt (rendered even shorter by the high footpegs).
Luckily, she had shapely legs.

Having a pilion on the bike (GSXR1000K4) doesn't bother me. The only time you really notice them is under really hard braking. Other than that just be smooth and they will be no problem. You can go almost as fast with a good pilion.

da missus and kidz took a while before liking 8 inches above me, and my missus is a little taller than me, so it must look really silly

I mostly ride 2up with my mate Nikki (hot Dutch girl). She positively affects the visual performance. But, even looking at the throttle in a careless way puts air between the front tire and the tarmac. Ballast makes a huge difference.

I've ridden pillion on a sportsbike, the seat was higher but it allowed me to see upcoming corners/speedbumps etc.

you really have somthign against wheelies dont you.

Your bike weighs 40 - 200 kg more therefore its going to feel harder to lean and pick up.
