Have any of you out there rebuilt a CRF at home?
I am thinking its about time to do mine, I have done a 100 hrs on it now with out a rebuild. Many people have told me that these bikes need to rebuilt every 40hrs or so i don't understand why if you maintain them regularly. Mine still has good compression and goes hard.
Is it worth doing it now?
What parts generally need to be replaced? Would i get away with using the same piston with some new rings and then freshen up the top end or is it worth going all out new piston, rings, gaskets, cam chain and valves etc?
What do you all recommend?

Piston, rings, top bearing and get your valve clearences checked.

the 04s are good bikes eh? i was the same with mine... over 250hrs with one top end. cant say the same for the 06.
its def. due though. Piston and rings. Valves.
if your asking what parts need to be replaced though id advise you to get a shop to do it, 4 strokes are aparantly pricks to work on due to timing [i never touch inside the motor on mine] and one little wrong thing costs big bucks.

Ive rebuilt a few older two strokes brfore found them reletively easy.
But yea the CRF is a different game all together. I am just contimplating whether or not i should give it a go myself, It could be a good lerning curve or and expensive mess. Im hoping the valves would just need to be reshimmed as i got some stainless ones put in at 15hrs never had any problems with them since
I will think about it a bit longer im just not a big fan of the labour rate at any of the local bike shops

No there not there little marks took us (wait for it ) about as long to do boosteds yz250f as it took to do the cr250. People just freak out cause there 4 strokes hoooo qiuck run for the hills hes going to work on a 4t.
I would do the cam chain as well as if its worn it will chew all the gears out saves havin to go back and doin it latter.

if ya got a good reliable one then id say keep it... some seem to go forever and some seem to be lemons.
id still be riding mine if it didnt snap in half

Ive often wandered why people run from 4ts I have rebuilt a few older 4t bikes and some car engines and am thinking of buying a 4t bike banking on it cant be that hard to do the top end etc
so i guees im asking how hard are they really considering i have done older 4ts in the past and car engines also

I've watched and it looked fairly straight forward...Still would be hard for me but simpler than people had explained and said it would be... Maybe barty just makes it look simple..:calm:

yeh was just wondering as mate has an 07 wr250f and had put in the yzf piston as it is higher compression.

nah it's apiece of piss. I'm way more scared of 2 stroke engines but that's cos i don't know em. VR4king you'll be mint... you sound like me... just a bungle boy bad billy backyard bob who isn't afraid to give it a whirl.
To answer the OP it is rebuild time and do it yourself the learning is invaluable
just take it slow and think before acting. Chain won't be a hundred bucks from honda and get a JE piston kit with gasket set from "nzmxparts". mark and place valves, springs and shims so that they go back in the same place they came out of. Get torque settings and valve clearance info. I've got a mechanic mate in the Hutt who'll come have a look if ya get stuck

workshop manual. I got mine from KTM parts online which is in the states (my dealer refused to get it for me) KTMonline won't send OEM parts overseas but i had it sent to a mate in San Francisco who sent it to me. Funny thing is i've ended up e mailing it to quite a few people on thumpertalk who live in the states
Should be easier to get a hold of workshop manuals for jappas and you can find heaps of stuff in torrent form on the net as long as your bike isn't too new. Also ask your dealer. they may be nice enough to photocopy the info you need out of their manual.
The guys in the workshop at my KTM dealer were nice enough to lend me some of the KTM special tools i needed for free. Jappas usually won't have the retarded timing up tools that the austrians use

well not really snapped in half, snapped the linkage which snapped the shock which sent half of it up through the airbox and almost though the seat, in turn sending the swingarm into the silencer and pretty much fucking the bike. thank christ i wasnt sitting down.
