who here gets one/ gives one?

how is it implimented?

My boss and I are currently toying with the idea of tool allowances, the boss is supplying everything atm, but is getting pissed off with the amount of gear getting lost by the workers, he thinks, maybe if they own their own tools they might be more responsible with them.......

by the way, how the fuck do you lose a rotating laser?

I make no allowance whatsoever for tools. I accept that many are attracted to Kiwi Biker but treat them with the contempt they richly deserve.

it can be done 2 ways,

one is a paid allowence, i am pretty sure this would be taxiable income tho, but you may be able to claim back the cost of tools,

if you use one tool supplier, the boss can pay in an amount and each person run an account, and the employees can choose when and what they want, this also limits them spending the tool allowance on other stuff,

yeah thats the best way I came up with, half these guys would spend a cash allowance on booze/weed, then loot everyone elses gear anyway.

the boss said something about working it out on an hourly rate..... wtf

what sort of coin is a normal allowance?

haha classic

standard practice a tool allowance, its the #1 reason why prying a tool from a mechanic is like getting a free drink from a scotsman, should be a part of any mechanics contract because it means you have your own tools

west city holden used to give me about $5 a week... and that was charged on top of each customers bill as part of "miscellanious" which also included stuff like crc wd40 silicon spray for loosening things etc.. bullshit in other words

I get just under $35 a week, but I have to supply my own tools for general factory maintenance and for specialised work the company provides the tools.

Your trouble would be what happens when they don't have the tools to do their job. How can you enforce it or penalize them for not having the tools. You could give them the tools at the start and then give an allowance from then on. Deduct pay if required to replace tools if they loose them (but be careful doing this as there is something in the law about taking money from their pay when it involves something about an unreasonable amount, but get advice from someone who know the law on this).

I operate a Fire Protection business. I pay my staff a tool allowance, to cover basic hand tools (screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, etc etc - the list is quite long). All other more specialist gear is supplied (drills, test equipment, etc etc).

Allowance is 25 cents an hour, which equates to $10 a week or around $500 a year. Few people would spend that much a year, so it is a bit of a perk. But a decent pair of electrician's pliers can cost $100+.

The allowance should be tax free, as it is basically a re-imbursement type allowance.

thats what I feel would be aout right.

I am a drainlayer, and work for a construction co, but I also do a lot of maintinance type work (pumps, waste water systems ect) I require a more versatile tool kit than most of the others, so I just use some of my own gear that makes the job easier.

I have a good selection of hand tools (shovels, rake, bar, sledge hammer, ect.) plus the contents of my toolbox, (allsorts of other crap, saws, drills level ect.) on my ute, but I reckon now that I am set up $500pa would be more than enough to maintain it.

I lost my level (dropped it in the ocean) and went to the boss cap in hand to ask if I could charge up a new one, he was sweet, no worries.

we got to talking about tools and stuff.......
some of the guys buy new wet weather gear when it rains (then loose it)
over 50 shovel in a year(do you think you could ever find one around the yard)
wheelbarrows
drills
a chainsaw
and so on

I work hard to keep all my gear together, but some mornings I have to guard my ute with my life against looters

Yeap, I'm serving my time as a fitter/turner right now and get a non-taxed 25c an hour tool allowance, this goes straight into a account in my name that the company opened for me.

They are pretty good about it, I can run up as much as I need (2k at the mo..) in the account so long as what I buy is related to the job and is approved before purchase. Specialist tools are provided by work. Definately people look after the gear better if their name is on it. Later on once certain other debits are paid up I will make voluntary payments into this acount to clear it up faster.

Hope that helps..

p.s I recently came across a rotating laser.. sell it to ya cheap :)

I could handle a 25c per hour allowance, after all the total tools i need is about 250 (max max)

the way alot of my clients do it is to get the workshop manager to write out a purchase order on the company account. ( Capricorn, Sulco account etc) the workers get $XXX deducted from their pay weekly until paid back.. .. i give trade prices to the mechanics...the shop can deduct the GST on their taxes.. the mechanics get good tools on time payments at a good price ...

Win/ Win

i can send the local Sulco rep to come see ya if ya like ...PM me the details

KB'rs get 15% off retail from me ..

You need approval from ird to pay a tax free tool allowance

I negotiated with ird several years ago for a company I worked to pay a tax free tool allowance of 40 cents an hour

All that is required is a decent business case and form filling in

IRD employ people selected primarily on ethnic basis rather that the best qualified person for the job so its is quite easy to pull the wool over their eyes and work the system to pay out generous tax free allowances

One thing to consider - if you're expected to use your own power tools, then the consumables related (drill bits, sander-belts, saw blades, etc) should be replaced or provided by the employer as required. That's the way we operate.

A tax free tool allowance was part of the Union award for decades. Most contracts in my game are closely worded on the old award....so I get a tool allowance, dunno if it's tax free, but it's there. Not enough to buy tools with....but good for lunch money.

So what's retail Sarge? - your sticker price, which is supposed to be our trade price....or do you remove the price tag for non trade buyers?

my old boss was pretty sweet. He just took me shopping once a month. Started with the tool box and over a couple of years i filled it. And its so nice to have your own well kept gear. Good luck.

everything I need, if I want it and can afford it the I buy it

tools:love:

I have no problem with using my own gear, If something gets broken/lost on the job then the boss is happy to replace it (its pretty rare)

we are just trying to come up with a way of making the guys take more resonsability for the stuff they use every day, reather than wrecking everything they come across, becuase they dont care....

EVERYBODY gets a 200 doller bonus at xmass tie or at the end of the financial year (more more regularly would be better) if less than '8 tools' as lost/damaged/destroyed.

The pack will keep everybody in check.

Christ I have to pay for EVERYTHING, yes granted work has an interest/fee free account I can use on proviso it's paid back, but if even I made a joke about the business buying me something I'd probably be burned at the stake on charges of fraud and heresy.

retail is sticker price .. trade is between 10-15% off that ..sometimes i can fudge it a bit if dealing with a good client ( large users get additional .. etc)

Tool allowance is when the boss makes an allowance fer yer bein an bit o a tool ya git....

Was a non taxable that goes way back when...I got it in the 70's

A couple of years back I was giving it to my staff...and apprentices were allowed to capitalize in on it, to buy tools earlier.
