View Full Version : Bored kids

I stopped and had a yak to a couple of kids doing silly shit on a back-road near me, in a car.

Granted, it took me a few minutes to talk them down from giving me the bash for interfering with what they perceived as their God-given right to act like fools.

The fact is, they're kids (early 20's) bored shitless with the modern risk-free environment of wall-to-wall OSH.

I asked if either could ride a bike. Both said they could...although maybe not one quite as big as mine...which kind've put them in the 1-to-2 zone of knowledge of bikes, 1-to-10.

Anyway. One thing led to another and I asked if they'd be keen to have a crack at riding my bike at Puke, on a track-day. That got their attention.

I explained that they could start really slowly till they got a handle on the bike and the track, then go from there. And that there would be 'almost' professional riders willing and able to give them all the advice they would need during the day.

I offered to kit them with my leathers, boots, helmet, back protector and gloves.

That all got too much. Vinnie (clearly the Alpha male) then said, 'Why ya talkin' 'bout this? Whaddaya want? Youse just an old cunt'....Gawd, where have I heard that before.....'Why you sayin' what ya sayin' man?'

'Hmmmm. The reason is complex. But to make it simple. You two, and lot like you, believe you know a lot about driving fast, but my guess is you haven't actually gone to any real limits.

On this bike, on the Pukekohe track, you 'could' take this bike out to 240Ks, legally.'

The fact is they'd be in group 4 and making the slowbies look fast, at first. And maybe a lowside or two might bring some reality to their lives. :--))

'The fuck you say! Man!' That's modern Hoon-speak for, 'You're kidding me, right?'

'Nup.'

That got their interest. Half an hour later, having explained the rules of engagement for a track-day, the 'boys' were converts.

So, I'd like to ask you all this, but prefaced with:-

I have had a fabulous life and taken from it a great deal. I now have the time and resource to put a bit back. I'd like to expose these hoons to the joy/fear/bang of real speed in a safe ER envirnoment. The hope being they'll tell their mates who will also want to have a go and, thereby, get a few more hoons into a new head-space.

I'm happy to put my bike on the block for the adventure.

The question is. Do you think I'm barking up the madman's tree?

Hows about that!? In the space of fifteen minutes I've had seven PMs plus a couple on the open board.

I see there's alos a few worry-guts worrying about my bike being destroyed.

Really? In order to destroy my bike the rider would have to do something so far outside their comfort-level as to be almost unimaginable.

But if he/she does, then ho hum, we'll probably have a funeral to attend. I like furnerals. The fre food, the singing.

No, all you worry gutses. Those who want to have a go will be real cautious till they get up a head of steam, then something will happen, like roaring into Jenian and suddenly realising ya can't see out of it, or into castrol and seeing the big fat wall ahead...all these things.

But the plan is to have some smart chaps from AMCC quietly guide the aspirants.....

At one stage I was an aspirant. I followed Doug...I think that was his name, acting as a line marshal.

We went into Castrol at about 90Ks and I'm thiniking, 'I'm dead.' Pulled brake. Doug waited for me down the straight.

Nar. These aspirants, these bored kids, they'll learn real quick that ego and death are brothers in alms.

And when they do, they'll start having fun. And then, just maybe, they'll realise that this sort of shit is done only on the track, not the roads.

Maybe,

Won't know till we give it a try.

Thats the great thing about clutches, they engage and disengage with almost mechanical motion. Comfort levels don't really seem to follow the same procedure.

Actually the more you mention, the more i like the idea.

Avgas, think about this. You're a punk kid, full of shit. Suddenly you're sitting on 600CCs of go bike. Ahead of you is a line Marshal who has promised to take it easy. You follow a bit. the marshal stretches out; he's got his left hand on his leg; you're struggling to kepp up with two hands witha death-grip. You panic a bit. Suddenly, your ego and your inability meet. But you're kid. You gotta show the 'man' you're up for it.

The 'man' hits the brake point at the hairpin, doing 200. The kid freaks, and so he should.

We all of us learn only from personal experience. No amount of talk will talk a kid down. Following a line marshall, who is maybe being a bit naughty, is the way to talk a kid down.

And hey, at the end of the day, if the kid trashes my bike, so what. At the time it was just a thing being put to good use.

If the kids hurts himself, well, he was given instructions from the men who know.

In this life each man gets what he deserves.

Fantastic idea dpex, had i been offered that i would definately take it up. Nothing better than showing the younguns that think they know it all what fun is really all about, makes what they think is fun lame in comparison.

Skids in a car or 200kmph+ with nothing between you and the ground? I can feel the rush already!! (Mine only gets to 170....)

Can you let us know when you get one, i would love to hear what they have to say afterwards!

I like the idea, but don't think it will work.

They'll probably go there, ride far slower than they believe they could and blame the bike or just learn that bikes are not for them and go back to doing exactly the same thing they where doing with their cars. And if one of them happens to be a talented one and rides at a decent pace, he will believe himself the new god of speed and go at suicidal speeds on his car forever.

That's how I see it.

P.S. I know this is none of my business, but feel in the need to ask: Are you ready to live with it if one of this kids breaks his neck while riding your bike?

Bloody brilliant. Your right about the now OSH enviornment, which I believe has gone ever so slightly mad. Granted things go faster in general these days, bikes, cars, running men, food, mail (electronic), and babies born after 1997 are now call the Post Net Babies, cause they have never been in a world without the internet.
Taking a risk on others like this is the best pay it forward I have seen for a while, (even though you state you are putting back into others what you have already gotten out of life). And these are young men who are most likely used to being told they cant, not, they can.
Motorcycling is a great leveller, and can bridge wide gaps in our society. This small (or not so small and definately significant) gesture of yours could start something fantastic and grow into an organised opportunity for others less fortunate. Well done, bling sent

Better bring them to a RRRS for them to practice riding first

You might as well hold their hands, baptize them, and declare them your apprentice/adopted child. That'll be a good guidance for them to be a good dad so their kids don't do stupid things like skidding in cars anymore.

Kudos to you for being such a great guy, I hope it don't backfire and ruin your dream of being a Pastor on KB.

Some people actually do give a fuck - and so so their parents (well the good parents at least) - it can end well, but sometimes the lackadaisical approach can end up having life changing impacts (and not in a good way).

Can I ask if you have ever expressed interest to a group that goes to the trackdays and asked if anyone would be prepared to let you have a go? While there are plenty of people on here who seem to mainly focus on the negative aspects of anything I sure there are just as many people who would be supportive and prepared to let someone have a go as long as they showed they were prepared to respect someone else's stuff. (Maybe these are the people that tend to quietly sit round and read more than they post).

Perhaps in the threads relating to track days some people who are prepared to let others have a go might let others know this and people can get in touch with each other. Fantastic, I am truely glad that things are going well for you. I know for a lot of people that there is no way they coudl afford the gear to try a track day to see if it is something they would be interested in and what the OP is trying with these people is a chance to try something that could give them every chance to addicted to a safe way to sate their need for speed.

Certainly his choice of people can seem unfair to those who have worked hard for everything and have a great ethos on life. But then some people if given a chance to make a change for good do make a change for good, it may happen with these kids - it may not, at least he tried.

Personally I would love to see most of the boy racers given a chance to get involved in something like this. Pay your fee for the day, rent some gear have a blast and perhaps make the roads that little bit safer. Sure some will say they will just go out and try going the same speed on the roads but then people will do that given any chance. Should we ban all racing and car/bike movies from TV too?

Perhaps with a little guidance some of these little s**ts can get to see a direct link between cause and effect - you go too fast you risk getting hurt, and risk hurting others. Hell even if they do act like a**holes and speed anyway perhaps what they learn on the track will be just enough to keep them on the correct side of the road and save an innocent family. (not that I condone this sort of behaviour, just trying to stay positive).

Jesus! But who are you? Is your daddy the head of OSH or ACC?

The very reason this society is so messed up is the lack of opportunity for real challenges. EVERYTHING has to be SAFE! Bugger me! These days ya can't even wack-off without some 'safety' mistress asserts you need a fucking condom, just in cae you got 'things' on your fingers.

Whomsoever gets to ride on the day will be well briefed by the AMCC troops. And my guess is that Vince and his men will be watching real close.

If one or more bins, then they bin. Christ knows, I'm the king of bins, and i'm still here to record it.

But many riders have ended up getting hurt. They knew that could happen before they rode. They didn't want it to happen, but shit happens. You either stay in bed and get bed-sores, or you expose yourself to some shit.

Get a life, buddy!

Sure, a few scares will come as a natural result of being on a strange bike, in a strange envirnoment, with a lot of ego playing tricks, and line-marshals...waiting ahead. :--))))

But I figure that after maybe two laps of Puke, a few lights will have switched on, a great deal will have been learned and, therefore, Kieth's concept of where to spend the ten bucks will come into play. Then the kids will go a bit harder but a bit smarter, too.

Can you remember coming into the pits after your very first track-day round?

Jesus, but I can. Frosty was there asking why I never got out of second gear, and laughing as he asked. But Jesus I felt unbelievably good.

How many kids out there ever get the opportunity to feel unbelievably good for something they have done as opposed to something they have smoked or sniffed?

I take your point, bud, but the fact is these kids see tar-seal as their place.

However, I'm always open to being proven wrong. How's about you and me set up such a day on your little patch. I'm up for that.

i have a job.i have qualifications.i work hard.

as a reward for all that,i have 5 motorcycles, and i can go to a bloody trackday(and often do BTW)when ever i damn well please.

That is the correct reward for being a hard working law abiding member of society.

If thats boring, well i guess i will happily be bored to death.

I absolutely respect your position Gamma. I, also, am a believer in Plato and Ayn Rand.

But, the fact remains; so many are not. And until someone makes some sort of effort to show them the way, then they remain forever blind.

Clearly, you either had good parents or some other influence enabled you to grasp the proper nettle. All I'm trying to do here is offer te nettle. Whether the 'boys' grasp it or not is beyond postulation. But if three don't but see a new vision, and one does, (at least in round one of this idea) then I'll feel pretty good about that.

Bloody well said, that man! Thank you.

I have had fabulous opportunity in my life. Many have not been so lucky.

Some years ago I used to run PD gangs at a school, at which I was the unpaid caretaker.

After many weeks of trying illicit one entire sentence from one particularly huge and clearly angry, massive man (he was at least six-five and weighed well over 250KG) I finally got him talking.

Thereafter, each saturday we would find a time to sit and yak. One day, having asked him what his childhood was like, great tears slid down his cheeks as he said, 'When I was a kid, if I ever made it to the morning with my pants on, I had had a really good night.'

Hey listen, I'm not on some sort of evangelical trip here. I'm just in a position to put a bit back where others have not/could not/don't want to, etc.

If they fuck the bike and/or fuck themselves, well, that's life.

Jesus! But who are you? Is your daddy the head of OSH or ACC?

Obviously not.

I'll take that as a yes.

Get a life, buddy!

Got one, thanks!

Some people actually do give a fuck - and so so their parents (well the good parents at least) - it can end well, but sometimes the lackadaisical approach can end up having life changing impacts (and not in a good way).

From the post they sould like they were young males - If thats the arse you are after, well, each to their own.

What a vile wee mind you have. If a cannibal split your head open to gain access to the contents I imagine he would find just enough green matter to cover a small water biscuit, and even then the taste would be foul.

So what makes me vile you self righteous little man? Was it the fact that I said some parents actually do give a fuck? I know I do - and I guess thats why I have three great kids.

Was it that I said a lackadaisical approach can end badly?? - well - Lets say you didnt take precautions and a kid died on the track. What happens ????

Was it my comment about the arse - was that it???? I was simply replying to a post where DB stated you may get arse out of it. Given that it sounded like it was young boys you were talking about in the original post I guessed it was him after the boys.

But hey - you are the bloke laying the spade work with the young fella - you get first dibs.

I did give him a chance and havnt said a single thing to him for a long time. The last communication I had with him (a while back) was saying that I could see he was changing and dropped the sig as he had asked nicely.

So he had a chance to prove himself and he did by red repping a post at random (his words) with the comment:

"I swear if you post one more bullshit post to me i will smash you fucken ugly head in. I have been racing longer than you have been riding."

There is no kudos for deciding to take the risk. When it is taken and the deed is done then he is perhaps deserving of kudos.

If he doesn't want his motives etc questioned or to hear other's opinions, he need only shut up, do the deed then regale us with his tales of success if he needs the adulation.

When in no way does it affect you if i deny i once made a certain post or once was a certain username.

Reido has a point, this track racing may only increase their likelihood of speeding, the track may instill a need for speed greater than what generated when racing on the road.

You use my denial for you're own entertainment, have a laugh at it and bait me so you actually have something to do for the night. May sound a bit harsh but if you had other things to do or keep you company you wouldnt bother searching up my old threads and bothering to quote my past posts.
When in no way does it affect you if i deny i once made a certain post or once was a certain username.

He does have things to do - like clean his bike (it used to be white you know)...baiting the likes of you must be way easier.

Personally I'd rather clean but then I'm not a lazy bastard :oi-grr:

It has taken me a long time searching for my old threads and posts, so the fact that gubb could search it and re quote the post is reason to believe he had an intention to bring it up, somewhat motivation. I mean it would be quite time and energy consuming, doing all that to accompany his interests/entertainment.
But I'm sure when i do meet him, our conversations wont be hostile, i will be friendly. Havent really got anything against him, just interested in why he wanted to reveal the past posts in which im ashamed of, to a public forum.

Just realised these boy racers, i may know who they are, notorious teens on the coast who have a reputation for being hoons.

I changed my mind. I like the "Obama" better. And this way it's easier than painting. Plus, it leaves me more time for Internet Tomfoolery.

And yeah. Going back 2 pages, and pressing one button is a real chore. Think of all that time I could have been using to cure AIDS instead.

No, think about all that time you should of taken to think long and hard before you posted my annoying past.

Doesent matter about the obama thing, what matters is opinions on what dpex should do with his bike.

I completely agree - however let me put it this way.
Say your fresh onto a bike - and i give you the latest from the Ducati forecourt then i tell you to follow me and your might learn something.
Then i tell you not to worry about the bike and really give it shit (this is not said in the real world - more programmed into the youth's brain)

When i first learned ride fast, on tarmac - i learned the vital lessons you are talking about. Why? because i had to pay for it - both before and after.

But mabey your right - i should have just sat on my arse and waited to get what i deserved. A race bike for nothing.

Shit i don't race now becuase i can't afford it (priorities and money).
But then again i don't do burnouts in cars for the same reasons.
Your a good guy - which why i say this : the world is a croc of shit when you stop smiling.
Reality needs to hit these kids - Dreams aren't given, they are made.

But anyway short circut and gubb, what do you think about dpex's plan to give the car "hoons" a race bike and race opportuinity. I have actually been given permission and an oppurtuinity from dpex to race it on the track. Luckily i am of a "matte brown" complextion so i wont have any problem beating the ones racing "pale".

I admire what you are trying to do, Dpex.

What would concern me though is that if you do loan your bike to one of these kids, there is a very high chance it could end up getting wrecked. From what I gather, you are not too worried about that, but what if you get another track bike, one that you really love and they want a go on that, but you don't want to let them as you've already lost one, and can't afford to lose another one? Or what if they want a ride on your road bike (I take it you have more than one? correct me if I'm wrong)

With some of these kids, things could get nasty very quickly in that sort of situation. It may not, as well, and they may well respect and appreciate the chance that you gave them on the first one and leave it at that, but they also may not.

This is all pure speculation, of course.

Turning them on to the track is a good idea in itself, however my concern is that you could stand to lose a lot if you let them ride your bike on it.

Just my two cents, anyways.

In this life each man gets what he deserves.

Absolutely wrong, and by giving these hooligans a ride on your bike disproves this point straight away.

What about the kid whos at work trying to save for his own bike? He doesn't get any praise because hes working his arse off for something he actually deserves.

Should have showed them how a real skids done then told them to go do something more productive.

Maybe you might change their attitude, but I always thought its better to give attention to good behavior, rather than bad

I get the dredging up of a three year old thread when the OP makes it famous (however they do it), but I'm finding it real funny that even up till yesterday he is getting replys to the original post 3 years on.

I hope he was eaten by a shark, or a giant octopus lol

And we now know that he was just trying to get close to those 'bored kids', not really as good intentions as the OP was trying to lead us to believe.
Its a stupid idea anyway, the kids would have got hurt, the bike broken. As stated above (by Frosty and others), a 600 on a track is not really the best place to start.
Better off on a 125 or less, playing around in a paddock or something. I would consider doing something like that for my nephews, but they would have to badger me for a long time first and I would have them start out on pit bikes probably.
