While looking for info about riding on beaches I found a few interesting gems from DOC. they even marked the tracks on decent topo maps so you can't get lost:clap:

This is a very good fine :niceone: Thanks for the links. Now we just need to figure out what other parts of the country DOC is preparing strategies for that include similar maps, go do some riding and send me track logs. Generally the more tracks like this are published and used while being respected the more likely they will remain open to the public.

Use the Mapsource and find the track and then transfer it asa route or get the lat and long from the beginning through to the end and enter it?
I dunno, might have a look myself on that one

On my maps with the GPS, I do have most of these.
They are marked as red dotted lines, tracks...
So effectively you could plot these and follow the routes...

The data in the PDF's is an image only so you would have to have mapsource open with topomaps visible and then click along the route creating a route. Couple of other ways but this would be the easiest. Also some of these routes already exist on my website so before you go creating your own check it out first. The likes of Big River, Napolens Hill, Denisting to New Creeek and the Waitahu are on my site. There are some interesting looking side tracks that I dont have on my website yet though. If anybody manually codes any of these routes please please sent the files to me!!!

Took me a while to realise this but the less points in a route file the better. A because you dont need the "approaching point X" screen on your GPS to appear all the time and B when the route follows a well defined road and doesnt turn off it there is no benefit in haveing intermdiate points. I'd suggest you point in points at intersection/hazards and just enough to have the route hading in the right general direction. If the route turns from traveling North to West but with no intersections put a point where you generally change from travelling North to West.

Are we the poor cousins (to 4wds) or what! It seems that there should almost be a National Adventure Riders Association (NARA) :niceone: or similar type of group to fight for access for us and support/help grow the sport. We could help support the NZFWDA (http://www.nzfwda.org.nz/) where necessary and them us. Anybody seriously interested? Wont be easy. I've never had any experiance at this sort of thing before (developing a club/association from scratch) but if there is about 4-6 who are really keen I recon we should investigate if further.

I could be interested in something like this, Adventure riding seems to be growing in popularity at the moment, or maybe it is just developing a more public profile through Internet forums like Kiwibiker. A national organisation promoting and Advocating for what we enjoy doing is a good idea as I can see access issues only getting more common as the population of NZ grows, and property owners have more issues over liability, vandalism, and DOC become more concerned with providing walking/ tramping areas with no vehicular access.

The interesting thing is that you called it a sport and in many ways it is, yet it is not represented by MNZ or am I wrong on that??

Seconded.
A couple of weekends ago me and 4 mates did an adventure ride from Chch to Lake Clearwater 90% off road. I spent at least an hour on the phone to a farmer discussing access to his land. (He has a partially formed 'paper road' running through his property). He was pissed off because DOC recently had taken (not really taken) control of a massive piece of land ( now called a conversation area) thats back onto his property and the idea was to provide NZers access to NZ.
The fact of the matter is DOC hasn't provided for the vehicluar access guys (us and 4wders) and what he thought would be an end to him needing to providing access to his property and disrupting his operation he's actually ended up with more requests for vehicle access because DOC has neglicted us.
He's pissed off, we're pissed off. At least these maps show a glimer of hope

Sport was my word I'm not sure what word is most appropriate. If this is going to happen we really need to get 4-6 very interested people who are prepared to put a bit of time into this. We would also need to get some funding from somewhere and we would need some buy in from industry, riders, councils, DOC etc. There is no point if we end up coming across as a bunch of crack pots who are half prepared.

As you said time for a separate thread.
