Coro Loop DANGER warning. Please read (17 April)

Folks anyone doing the Coro loop in the next few days PLEASE be careful on the Coromandel-Whitianga road.
4-5km from the Coromandel end of the Coro/whitianga road a four wheel drive blew up either its engine or gearbox. They dumped about 4-6l of oil on the road. Unfortunately the guy was about smack bang in the middle of the road when he did it and it took 500m before al the oil came out. It looks like a big tar snake.
Efforts were made to clean it up but its still pretty slippery.
Its already claimed two bikes and they weren't moving real fast.

Heading out of Coro Id take it easy till youve passsed it and from Whitianga end its about in the middle of the last set of twistys

Specifically--From Coro end on the road its just into the first set of real windies

UPDATE 6.00pm --Blackbird just went over that bit of road and it looks to be clean and clear of oil But please be careful on that bit in case theres any oil residue

Cheers Frosty - when was this? I nipped over to Hot Water Beach from Coro on the bike mid-day yesterday and didn't see anything. Just to be clear, where exactly do you mean? 4 km from Coro would place it just on the eastern side of the Coro Hill. I'm doing the Loop tomorrow with a couple of KB'ers so it would be nice to know where exactly.

Glad it's only just happened. I was in Coro town over easter and had the opportunity to do a few laps of the hill on the supermoto. That road was made for it! :D

Maybee if a local is there they can update this.
One bike is a tecnical wrightoff--600km old suzuki bulivard The other has very minor damage. Slammed full lock at 70km/h though.

Just driven from Coro over the Hill as far as the Whangapoua turn on the eastern side and back in the car so I could have a really good look. The whole road is as clean as a whistle apart from the hint of a line on the eastbound lane on the Coromandel side of the summit, starting about 300 metres down the hill and fading out close to the summit. This line is a couple of inches or so wide and extends for maybe 100 metres - I don't know whether this is what you're referring to. Almost looks like the sort of line you'd get if someone lost a drain plug. It's pretty much in the centre of the eastbound lane. If anyone is doing the Loop anticlockwise, it shouldn't be a problem but best exercise care as Frosty says; especially as the odd shower is forecast tomorrow.

Lucky bugger! After my first visit to the Coromandel at the end of March, I can certainly see why you live there! We had a fantastic time (saw the Beach Hop too) staying at Pauanui and visiting all those great beaches.

All I can say is, you live in paradise and I want to retire there too!

THANKS MAN. sounds like the recovery vehicle might have cleaned up behind the bikes. JUst to be sure we have the same place--Where it ends theres a run of armco.
