Bought this tyre off Pritch only bout 6 weeks ago I guess? Pritch? The last pic is as it looked when first fitted, about 1/4 ish worn.
Anyway, great deal on it in all (thanks again kind sir!) but I have gotten sideways a couple of times on it & i'd hazard a guess it's due to the current condition of said tyre. Anyone had a rear start cutting up like this?

Adjust your riding to suit your tyre(s) or get tyre(s) to suit your riding. I suspect you are a member of the Kill a Tyre in 1500kms or Less brigade...
That always costs.

Yeah no drama's, just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced a similar thing is all.
Bike is up for sale so just wanted to put a newer tyre on it prior to sale, it is a Metzeler Roadtec Z6 so hardly a sub standard tyre.

A. You are a hoon and need a sport tyre.
B. The tyre was actually 7/10's worn and he glued hundreds of used condoms on it, cut new grooves and painted it black.......
C. It has been sitting for a long time - and it has gone 'off'.
I suspect C, as I have had this happen on a bike some years ago - tyre looked perfect but it had had little use for a couple of years and hardened up - it wore badly, handled like crap and was replaced with only about a third worn. Problem fixed.
Or it could be option C.........

You can check the date of manufacture. All tyres that I have seen come with them embossed somwhere on the sidewall of the tyre. Generally a three or four digit number eg 1401 meaning 14th week 2001. Or 145 14 week 1995.

Wrong! He got a good tyre cheap. Sometimes it does happen.
It was a Metzeler Z6 I took off my bike when I fitted a set of Diablo Rosso. The tyre was about one third worn and had only been off the bike since about September... It had been stored in the house out of direct sunlight so there was nothing wrong with it. I would not have hesitated to use it myself and I'm fussy.
If that's he did to a sport touring tyre I'll be interested to see what he does to a sports tyre?
"Tank of gas and a new tyre please?"

Way to much pressure Boob. Thats why it's doing that shear thing in your pics. Lower the rear down to 34-36 and feel/see the diffference.
I ride 32 in the front and 34-36 in the rear on my R1. Any higher in the rear and I do a tyre in 3-4K and it looks like your pics.
learnt the hard way and going to track days where tyre pressure is critical.
Cant go wrong with a pirelli though.

Mr J, all this has a certain potential to be instructive.
I'd have thought a sport tyre would've worn faster than a ST tyre. So given no change in your operating methods I'll be interested to hear how long your new Diablo lasts.
Conventional wisdom says that underinflated tyres wear faster than correctly inflated tyres so I for one will await your reports with interest. Please keep us posted.
Oh, and what are you running on the front while all this is going on?

I for one wouldn't run a diablo at 36 on the road ! Sure, on the track i would, but there is lots of documented evidence that the temp won't get up high enough during road riding to raise the pressure to a good operating pressure !
Made the mistake once of failing to reinflate after a track day and rode two up back from Taupo with 33 psi in the rear and all but nailed a new tyre !

It obviously has the potential to partly to do with tyre pressure but I suspect more so the riding as the vast majority have been brisk Whanga runs.
Yeah you would think a sports tyre would wear as fast if not faster, im with you on that.
Front is a Metzeler Sport Tec M-1, 3/4 worn after about 7k (as per photo).

Since when have corners chewed out the centre of a tyre?

A closer inspection shows the majority of the tyre chewed out.
Steve you are getting very old hat sorry mate, trolling around putting silly tags on every thread I post in & red repping every post possible, how old are you man?
You were once fun to play with but it seems you take this a little more serious than you let on.
Take a deep breath, have a cup of tea & loosen up a bit mate. You'll die of a heart attack one of these days

But UNDER-inflated tyres get hotter.
I run the GSXR at 37r/33f and get excellent mileage

Looks like it's getting near end of life anyway isn't it?
Most of my tyres look like this in the end.
Maybe it's just my imagination, but many tyres appear to hit a softer material near the end of life that peels of in a big hurry. The BT016 on my XT just balled up and disintegrated in the middle on the way back from the BOI at Easter. Some of the Conti behave the same way.
How many k's is on the tyre?
Only reason I am not keen to run the Z6 again is that the wear is deceptive.
As there is no tread in the middle to gauge wear, you look at the sides and think you have enough then within a few km you have cords showing in the middle.

Na was only partly worn as of early March (see the 4th photo in OP). About 6 weeks use & ive destroyed it lol. I ride one or two days a week, that's it at present due to work load but each ride is at least 200km's some days 250+.

Sorry the photo doesn't tell me how many km were on the tyre.
I tried to indicate in my previous post, I do not believe (though I also accept that I could be wrong) that wear is necessarily linear.
Because the tyre still looks to me from the photos like it is near the end of it's life. Your tread depth near the centre looks low, on the centre, had you tread there, it would very likely be even lower.

Since when are Z6s sub standard?
that looks like my tyre did after some rolling burnouts. but z6s always chop out like that at the end of their life...
you may find that you are thrashing too much for a touring tyre...

lol na not burnout's, not into that.
Yep more likely thrashing a touring tyre. For those that know the Whanga road, from Stratford to Whanga & back without stopping will keep a lot of heat in your tyres if at a brisk pace I would imagine. 63km's each way & sometimes I go to the start of the Tanga Gorge & back so more like 80km each way of twisties............fark what a road :2thumbsup

I'd have to agree. I've got supercorsas on now and the tack is unreal. But man do they wear (to be expectd). My last set was the 2CT's and I had no traction problems and they seemed to last for ages.
I'd recommend a set of these. Pricy though.
And I've started a love affair for the 55mm profile which seems to tip in easier than the 50 profile.
2CT for sure. And who really cares about the $$ when its only the rubber between you and the deck! As long as there is food in the fridge, the rents paid and theres gas in the tank
