View Full Version : Good two-up bikes?

Boob Johnson

Have the current steed up for sale & looking at getting something that handles as good as possible but still good for two up riding. Not so much touring just taking the newly acquired Mrs Johnson for a pootle on a sunny Sunday.

Have been looking at a few bikes but nothing has really jumped out at me so far.

RF900R - My first big bike, which I loved but my one was shit house two up, more than likely the rear shock needing replacing, but still a lil gun shy of.

1200S Bandit - Just not really sportie enough for me when Mrs Johnson isn't on.

What other bikes should I consider? Am thinking of just getting something similar to current steed but just Bi posto

I think your going to have to post some photo's of Mrs Johnson so we can nominate a bike that suits.

Being that we are a "1 bike" family i suggest maybe a TL1000s which my hubby had or maybe a buell(any)

Something like a R1 are not too good for 2up, keep slipping foward,

Anything that has a user friendly seat, Try going to bike shops and just sitting on them

Would def be keen on a TLS or R, pref an R as I have already had an S. Missed on a mint as TLS with all the work been done to it recently, grrrr. Wrong timing :angry2:

That if you aren't afraid of Hondas of course.

I struggle to think of something with handling near your Kawa that will also be suitable 2-up. My 900 maybe but the back seat of mine has only seen the kids on it hooning up and down the drive :2thumbsup so I cannot comment. Plus it's a Honda so you'll have to put up with KB gay jokes.......

GSX1400 or a CB1300 maybe?

Probably feel a bit like a bus after the Kawa so maybe a few test rides would be required. I've seen some of the 1400's piloted at impressive knots. There is a very good review on KB somewhere from a 1400 owner with a photo of his being hooned around a track.

ZX14 but I may be a bit bias ;)
Loads of torque...can be biffed around a lot more than most people realise especially when the suspension has been dialed in properly.
Effortless power and a good cheap bike

By gun shy you mean it was too much bike for you? Or what?
The RF900 is great bike for two up - must of been something wrong with your shock

1200S Bandit - Just not really sportie enough for me when Mrs Johnson isn't on.
You're joking right ?
It may look a bit more of a tourer, but it doesn't lack in the performance and handling department, take it from me it will dispatch the RF900 easily enough - my Bandit has seen some 'sportier models' disappearing in the mirrors
Take one for a ride
But I do like the VFR750's 800's seem good for two up
The GSXF range is a nice bike 2 up and sporty look as well
Honda Blackbird as to be the ultimate 2up bike and sportier than you'll need on the road

Na RF was a great bike, loved it. Just didn't corner as well when pushing it through the twisties. And yeah pretty sure the rear shock was on its last legs as two up was farking terrible!!!

Only problem is timing to go out & test ride them when we have time off together & I won't make a rash decision on a short ride.

Don't no how partial ya are to the nakeds Boob but if ya do look at the speed triples try an older model over a new one as the Mrs don't enjoy the 06 (grasshopper styles) And i can think of a better time to have her knees up by her ears !
The 03 we have done quite a number of 3 or 5 hour trips and she gets off (lol yep just twigged to that but it aint a harley) feeling great !
But going back to getting off, if ya wanna do ya lady a real favour (and yaself everytime ya stop in a secluded spot) get yaself a big block harley so i'm told !
Had a lady tell me on sat night (she's from whanga incedently) that most ppl just don't understand how orgasmic it is for women on the back of a big block !
Personally i cant see how, but i have felt the odd tightening of thighs on the odd occasion i took women for rides when i had one, ( and here's me thinking it was because i had a single seat and they were sliding on the back gaurd haha how naive)

But it has been slightly modified to bring out the fun factor - Ohlins front and rear, motors been tweeked a little as well

But are you looking for the image more than the function

Have you tried one? As I've understood they aren't exactly sluggish. If you want to do longer rides with a pillion I have been told that they at the very least should be considered.

I doubt a modern VFR800 would be heavier to throw around than the zx7 to be honest...

I was wondering how long it would be till the BB got a mention :calm: A well set up machine can give you either hours or kms of fun in comfort 2 up or mono. I regularly do a coro loop & can stay with most sporties, do the RNMC Grand Challenge, tour the nth isld in comfort & look forward to doing the sth isld next year. There are many good example's out there for @ $10k or less

Excellent bike for 2up. I did many 1000s of Ks as a pillion, extremely comfortable, nice big fat padded seat.

My son (big lad to) found my VTR1000 OK on the back and its good for a bit of a hoon as well if your in that 6-10k price bracket.

But if you have a little more money, my mate has had 3 VFR800's now, and all of them have pushed along bloody well when the riding ventured into the sport arena! I'm like you though Boob, it looks a little to touring for my tastes even though it handles bloody well. Quite an underrated bike!
My choice now (if I hadn't bought a new MX bike instead) would be a Daytona 675 but I still have the old Z1R for our 2 up trips. The old style slab seat bikes are still the most 2 up friendly! They sit right behind you and go more wifely speeds. Haha problem solved get a classic as well as yours!!
If I was not so selfish and genuinelly bought a bike for the best 2up The VFR800 would head my list then Bandit (with fairings model), speed triple, Ducati monster, Vmax maybe? Busa might be in there if it wasn't for the droopy melting off the front, headlight look they have, bloody ugly, but each to their own!
Just a few thoughts!

I have been thinking about what I might (one day) replace my CB with. I want something a bit more sporty, but not too sporty, still comfortable for LONG rides, like you pillion accommodation is also a high priority. Ideally less than 5 years old, less than 20,000km (which is only a years riding for some of us).

So far my Test ride list has on it (in no particular order):
Aprillia Futura
Triumph Sprint
Ducati St (2,3 or 4)
VFR800
Blackbird.

I took a firestorm for a ride and the wind coming off the screen hit just in the wrong place on my head setting up a real whistle in my helmet. Lifting or dropping my head an inch or so made a huge difference, but I couldn't ride like that for long, though a double bubble screen might solve that. Aside from the whistle and looking for a gas station every 150km or so I thought it was great.

Would take a bit to go back to an RF900, not that I didn't like it of course but more it's something I have already had. Plus it's unlikely i'd repeat the same deal I got the last time

A. I got my licence back on Tuesday. So. Muahahaha!

B. She was serving perfectly well as a Clubmans racer in the interim, too. Although the power-to-weight disadvantage against Sinfull's 955 was really starting to show (the lap time differences had nothing to do with our respective riding abilities, I'm sure).

... this would mean I could be doing you a favour by test riding.

I always insure my bikes for any licenced rider, so you're quite welcome to 'ave a go any time we're in the same part of the countryside.

Stickchick and I will be pootling down to Wellywood for Queen's Birthday weekend, so I could always pop by your way and do a bit of a bike-swap loop while the ladies sit at home with cups of tea.

Also, Mully's shameless arse-kissing (see above) has resulted in him leaving me with his RF and getting the 1400's key for the day today, so you might want to check the ride review which I assume he'll post later.

I usually chip in with the buy the bike I ride threads and lay plaudits upon the mighty GSX1400. On this occasion though, whilst it is blisteringly quick and has certainly got the pillion side covered, I think your after something a bit lighter and more agile.

Frankly mate any thing sporty that will take two up well is bound to be a bit lardier, so I guess I'd have to pin my flag to the Blackbird, other than that I'm stumped, Very interested in what you end up with.

Why bother posting a reply if I ain't sure myself?? Why to congratulate you on your choice of bride of course, what a stunner, if she's a sample of your ability to choose wisely, I think you'll get the right bike for you, Blardy well done my man.

There are Aprillias and Aprillias, some designed to accommodate a pillion, some not. The Futura is one of the former rather than the latter.

For longer trips you might want some fairings though. Being out in the wind is refreshing and enjoyable - but one can only do with so much refreshing and enjoyment I'm afraid.

This is another of those impossible quests, and in the unlikely event that a sensible suggestion does actually arise it will promptly be declined for one reason or another.

Sports bikes have not had comfortable pillion perches for some years now, that's waaaaay down the design brief.

I have it on good authority that the Hornet 900 has the most comfortable pillion accommodations of any of the Honda range apart from the specialist tourers. It's to do with the way the pipes dictate the placement of the pegs.

The VFR, however, is another bike rated as pillion friendly, may I suggest that you haul arse down to Energy Honda and ride their demonstrator? Anything more sporty than that is highly unlikely to be pillion friendly. Comfort will end up being somewhere between sitting on some sort of anal floss and a cruicifixion. That won't win her heart...

An FJR1300 is hard to beat as a two-upper.
FJR1300??? Geez Hitcher, I have only JUST started to get a few grey hairs, not a full head yet so ill save the "beached whale" tourers for then I think :innocent:

BMW R1200GS or as the others have said, GSX1400
Why? Dunno, i like their look & what they represent
Both visually pleasing but out of current fiscal considerations

The long-awaited (well, not really. But it makes me feel better) review has arrived.

I assure you, any errors or omissions are my own fault and not the fault of the motorsikkle.
Sweet man, will take a look shortly :niceone:

An FJR1300 with a suitably competent rider will ride the arse off most bikes you care to name...

Now those I do like the look of, old school muscle bike & blue is both our fav colour, particularly Cobalt Blue :niceone:

Just not sure on the handling, as mentioned I don't want an all out tourer.

Got lots of test riding ahead after this thread :ride:

Yeah well that leaves me out then

While my skill level has drastically improved over the last few years, it would be optimistic to include competent in the same sentence as my riding ability :innocent:

The first ride I took mummy on she hated the R1 (dont blame her...they call that a pillion seat!!)
So I thought to hell with it and brought a single seat cowl.
No more pillion worries. And how many times have you seen a chicky on the side of the road hitching with a helmet?? never huh?!
Take missus tramping more and get the bike you really want.......
