Gday. So I have decided that I want a new bike, I would LOVE brand new (say existing brand new 2008 stock) or a bike no older than say 2002, at the oldest. I know I want reasonably sporty, and between 600 and 1000cc, prospective toys are a ninja, NOT a gixxer (sorry gixxer fans) maybe a YFF, REALLY keen on a CBR---RR, or a TL1000R (I like the faired one better!)
Now, this isnt a thread on "what bike is better" or asking for opinions, blah blah blah, as I will test the bikes and decide what I like. What I want is some direction on who to go looking at, Ill probably need to finance some of it (after a reasonably large deposit) So I am thinking I will likely go to a dealer (I know, Ill pay a bit more) So I am wanting peoples advice on who to go speak to. I havent had the greatest experience at most of the bike shops in Dunedin (bar advanced, they were great, but dot currently have anything I want) so I dont really want to put a large chunk of cash in their tills, so Im thinking of looking at christchurch..
So, long story short, people, who do reccommend I go see?? (ps I REALLY like the CBR's so direction to any Honda dealers would be ace!!)

Dealers list bikes here:
http://www.motorcycletrader.co.nz/
Pop on and have a look around the South Island dealers. A cheap flight to check it out and you could be riding home.
PS - All the late model stuff is good, it's just what pulls your chain.

*sigh* Do you like tomato sauce? I dont. and I dont care if that means Im not a real kiwi...
I have my preferences, have ridden gixxers, and they are a great bike, it is just that I like the other ones in the above list MORE than I like gixxers!!! I have narrowed my wish list down, but still need to narrow it a bit more yet. If I came across a great example of a GSXR at a great price etc etc, maybe Id be swayed. never say never and all that...
Thanks for the dealers list to whoever put that up!!!

Not really new to buying bikes, have had heaps, but dont live in CHCH, and I want to know whee I should be looking before I go up there willy nilly and waste a day looking at stuff Im not interested in!!

Nah fair enough, i just figured you might want a bit of gsxr encouragement.
As has already been said, most late model sports bike's are the same, just buy what you like i say, then blast it all the way home from Christchurch

Too right, they really are much of a muchness these days!!!, we all have our preferences!! I am still largely undecided though!
Have found a nice TL1000R for about 8k, but it has about55k on the clock which im not 100% sure on!!!, and came across a couple really nice CBR's, and a nice ninja...

Yeah Ill keep that in mind. This has been on my mind for a while now, and I said to the girl tonight, "I wanna spend 16 thousand on a new bike" she said what??? and I said ok, well maybe a bit less, and she said, hmm, well, itll put a house back another year or two, but, yeah ok. lol. so now I am looking. Im the type to be looking for ages, then I will see a bike for the first time, pay my cash, and ride it away the same day, I get all the info, think about it for ages then make a snap decision, so Im compiling a big list of "maybes" at the momment.

Yeah thatd be great, New probably outta my range, but second hand, no older than 1999 or so. In all honesty, I would like to keep it under 10 thou if possible! I could go over, but there are LOTS of good bikes out there for less, so wanna keep it down a tad if I can restrain myself!!!

Cant point you in the direction of a dealer, but whatever you do, dont borrow money from GE Money.

not sure,I know that trading doesnt give you anywhere near as much, so might sell it privately, and do a cash deposit. Havent fully decided yet.
As for value, just loking around tonight on the net, I have seen bikes identical to mine, and reasonably close in K's on the clock from 6-8 thousand, being sold by dealers, and I saw one that was 2 years older, for 6 thousand at Honda Otago (right before they went bust, a couple weeks ago). Having said that, there is a guy in timaru ot temuka tryna sell his on tardme, but he isnt getting offered more than about 2800. (he paid 5500 for it just a couple months ago) I think. So dont really know what Id get for it. Its in very good condition, never dropped, well serviced etc etc. The person I bought mine off bought it in november last year for 5500, (I got it in February this year). so thats really the question I guess!!!! what do ya reckon?

update!!
Well, took a TL for a ride today, great bike, felt ood, loads of tourque, but nonetheless, I have removed it from my list. So I feel at this point I am narrowed down to an R6, and a fireblade (900), probably 75/25 in favour of the R6, but i still need to get ass-on-seat time on a decent ride yet

Hi TT20. Now I KNOW you said no gsxrs, unless it was a bargain....Well, if you do pop up to Oamaru I can recommend Young Motors the Suzuki dealer. I've found them very helpful, knowledgable and honest to deal with. They are selling a brand new 2008 gsxr600 for $13995 + ORC at the moment.
Looks fantastic to me, but I am a fan. It may be worth a few minutes of your time just to have a look.
Good luck with your shopping!

yeah, thanks, even though I dont really want a GSXR, I still fully intend to take one for a ride anyway. Fact is, everytime I take a bike for a ride, my preferences change accordingly. I may yet end up wanting a bike I havent seriously considered at all. Basically Im just waiting till I turn up to tke a bike for a ride, and it all clicks, and I know its the one I want ...
Fuck sakes, I sound like a woman looking for a man, christ! :oi-grr:

what about an earlier R1 98-04ish if you're looking at R6's or CBR's.
lots of them out there and some bloody good prices too.
I know this isn't close to you but as an example its good.
this is a work mates old one he got $8400 as a trade so should be room to move on the price..

05 onwards CBR600. It's what you have, only better by so much it's unimaginable. Almost as good as a GSXR600. Almost is a nice way of saying not quite good enough, in the same way that the grand canyon is quite a ditch.
But you'll love it. In the same way you like an ugly chick that gives really good head.
Don't buy a TLR / TLs - great bikes, but you need to be a very competent rider to live with the rotary shock on the rear. It's shocking.
Also, consider 04-06 ZX6R. Almost as good as a GSXR600. In this context, think of almost as missing out at the checkout, when the operator closes just as you get to the front of the line. That's the disappointment of almost having a GSXR600...

If you haven't done much riding - which it sounds like you haven't as you are inexperienced in purchasing bikes - or riding them, then why would you go for a hard out sports bike.
I think you should go for a bike that you can learn to ride on properly, gain all the riding experience you need - and then later, get a Real bike - who cares what brand - so long as you have tried them all and made up your own mind.
Personally, every bike shop would help with finance - you just got to find the right bike for you! That is the first thing you need to do. The rest will follow.
Happy bike hunting :scooter:

Ive been on bikes for 11 years, had plenty of experience, if not a tad wary after nearly getting killed last year in a head on with some bitch in a cage running a red light.
Have in the past bought bikes with cash up front, but giving up work and going back to study again means I dont have that ability anymore, which is a shame, cos I usually get a signifcant discount when turning up with a large number of $100 notes!!!
Its really just a matter of not being able to pick ONE. In the past Ive usually known exactly what I wanted and gone and bought it, but for the type of bike I want now, man, so many choices!

Just get a 2008 R1 and be done with it. They (Yamaha) are offering cheap finance on last years price(s). Dont quote me but around $18995? And if your dealer in CHCH is keen he will offer you a good trade in. If he doesnt say, "sorry man, I can't take your old stock off the floor if you offer me a shitty trade-in like that"
You'll find they will be keen to talk turkey with you, espicially if you have some cash to throw at them.

How is the hunt for a new bike going? I drove past the Oamaru Suzuki dealer yesterday and the gsxr 600 wasn't in the window anymore, so it may be gone.
