Yup, it is. Mmmm, mmm.
I'm not generally a pie eating type, but those BP Express pies have lured me over to the dark side on several occasions...

There was a little cafe up Plimmer steps that baked 'pork and kumara' pies that were very very yummy, plus one of the girls used to sing opera. Also the 'thai chicken curry' pies from Alleluya cafe in St Kevin's arcade on K' Road - yummo. They used to supply a home made chutney stuff to put on it as well.

I have to admit too many pies not enough running have cost me 30 kg's since i started my current job.
All time fave would be pats pantry chicke kumara and apricot .d...r....o....o....l.
When pissed nothing tastes quite like a BP peppersteak pie. (never Heaved after ward and the hangover seemns to be less despite needing something to lean on at that stage!)
New Kid on the block is a real contender though Mighty Ben (shameless plug, now available at Caltex Grey lynn) 215 grams means really good pastry to filling ratio combined witht the tried and trusted big ben filling.
also worthy of a mention:
Rabbit and cranbery (horse and trap during the food festival 2003)
Deer redwine and tamarillo sauce, (as above)
Mrs Macs beef bacon and cheese (Avail Caltex Grey Lynn)
Mrs macs Chilli Beef & Cheese (avail Caltex Grey Lynn)
Tamarillo, Kumara and pork. (was from a bakery in inglewood before it burnt down).
Dont forget the venerable eskimo pie.
Even as a confimed carnivore I still like spinach and cheese!

Trisha's pies make an awesome vegetarian pie.
I had a BP Thai Chicken pie last night and it was great. Beats some of the crap pies you get from the servo.
Has anyone from the wellington region had a pie from a place called, Alice town? They won "pie of the year award" a few years back, fucken brillant pie, its about the only pie that tastes good to me, oh and potato tops, cant go wrong with any potato top.
The shop changed hands soon after winning that award. Dunno if the quality is the same now.

BP is the reliable choice when you're on the road, but if you're ever cruising through Waipukurau down in hawkes bay stop in at Greenlands Bakery. Potato Top heaven. Only takeaway I know is any good in hamilton is Happy Days on Norton Road, the best Sweet and Sour pork that we can get (and we've tried about 20 places) so we drive 20 mins to get it.

erik

The silverdale bakery does good pies, the chicken curry ones are particularly good.
The New Windsor bakery (in the shops near the Maioro st and Windsor rd intersection) does pretty good pies and other stuff too and are pretty cheap.
I was surprised how good the BP pies were when I tried one. Much better than Big Ben or Irvines etc. Bit more expensive though too.
Anyone know a good place near AUT to get pies? The student cafeteria there only has Irvines pies (which are ok, depending on how long they've been cooked and whether you're unlucky enough to find a lump of fatty chewy crap in them [the steak ones, anyway]).

Trisha's Pies, Kilbirnie or Kent Terrace:
Small (about 250gms) or large pies (about 450g I think) or Family (fricken huge)
Steak and cheese
Steak and mushroom
Steak, onion and tomato
Steak
Steak and kidney
Mince
Mince and cheese
Chicken
Curry chicken
Chicken, apricot and brié
Hot and Spicy (mince)
Vegetarian
Lasagne (lasagne mix, topped with pasta, cheese and tomato)
Bacon and egg
Potato Top
Let me tell you pie eaters, pies taste BEST when RIGHT out an industrial oven, with a little tomato sauce where applicable. Them being free only adds to the taste!

The absolutely best pie I've ever had is from a cafe in Greytown but I don't know if it's the same one because it's not on a corner. It's on the right as you head north and has two small tables outside and a patio bit on the left when you go in. Their chicken ones are so so nice! They've got wholegrain mustard in them and chunks of really nice chook (not that mucasey stuff most pies are made of). They're ka pie :niceone:
