Come in pilgrims of the gravel ! We are planning to head down to Ranfurly friday the 29th , probably go Haka , Danseys going down. Saturday we'll aim to do the Dunstan Trail / Serpentine road. Sunday we will head out over the Omarama saddle then take SH1 to the Lindis from there we will head up over Forest Range station and drop into Lake Hawea then over the Crown Range and stay the night in Queenstown. Monday head home.
Obviously the Plan is weather permitting and is not chisled in stone.
We will meet at the BP Rollerston 8.30m on Friday the 29th, My mate owns the Sherwood Manor Hotel in Queenstown so we can get good accomodation rates.
txt me on 0273669717 if you need any more info.

Hey Mick,
As per the last few years our crew normally meet at Cave so will no doubt see you at some point on the way down. Would be very interested in doing Dunstan trail and especially Forest range station with you as haven't done this trail before. I'm sure as the date approaches there will be more discussion on route options but needless to say I'm sure all the normal suspects will be going south, will you be staying in Ranfurly?

Pilgrims of the Gravel !! If you can Tues get Tues off work , we may extend the trip to leave Qtown , take earnslaw to Walter Peak then do the gravel route to Garston and drop into the Nevis , back to Qtown for Mon night then head home tues. This is a WIP option at this stage !!

Actually, the other option is to go tramping with my wife. I suspect she would prefer not to be referred to as 'some chick' :innocent:.

Most mountain passes in the area are out of the question just now. Maybe the snow will melt a bit by the end of the month. I'll probably be going over the Danseys this weekend (if conditions permit) so I'll let you just what its like. Remember that the Haka is considerably higher, so if Dansey's is out so are the rest.

mickeyboy
12th May 2009, 09:15
Last 3 years we've had great weather going down , cold but not to much snow , as I said in my intial thread we will go where we can weather permitting !! Hopefully the current snow will be gone by the time we leave !! Good luck with your Dansey's ride.

My son and I are on a sailing from Wellington to Picton on Thursday AM 28/5 if that's any help - heading for Ashburton to hook up with XF650 and the Southern Men to ride to the Brass and beyond returning to Wellington (God willing :-) ) on Tuesday 2 June

Perhaps one of the Blenheim or Nelson lads / lasses could meet us at Picton or Blenheim. I think XF650 may be planning on getting the little fella whilst on the North Island invasion. Cheers Aslan :wari:

Fran - sounds like a plan - subject to XF650 aka Struan chiming in - I'll fit in with whatever is agreed - he could ride with us to Ashvegas and then climb aboard those Christchurch based Katooms - just to share the experience around - be good to catch up with you again - cheers Aslan :woohoo:

I can bring Pooey south to Ashburton from Reefton via the West Coast. But he will have to play "trailer bitch" - it's a work trip for me so I'm trailering the DT to the ride via Marlbourough / Nelson.
So yes, if you Nelson riders can entertain Pooey till Aslan picks him up, then it might save him some embarressment.

Sounds like quite a band of of adv riders and I'm heading down with another 3 via a Twizel stopover and as many gravel roads as we can fit in.

Sitting here looking out at the rain & gale after having fitted a new rear tyre, valve check, service and resprayed the exhaust - it's amazing how maintenance seems quite important quite close to a big trip & doesn't get done at any other time

Looking at the weather forecast:

I reckon it's surfshorts & shades ... hope someones bringing a fridge for the beer... or maybe the Met Service is having a laugh

On the safe side I'm still going to bring the tent and 4 season bag!

I still like Orange but am not sure if I could handle the power drop:chase:

Actually I would have bought one, but for the fact that im chasing lap times at Taupo and that my DR800 buddies would string me up, what was the motivation for your purchase ( ps, checked your profile, nice bike )

This is to tease you Mick, the bike that lost out to the Tuono

[/IMG]

Thanks, it had 7km on the clock from new at the time. I had a Blackbird that kept threatening to run off with my license in its beak. The Tuono is... slower. This might sound a bit strange, as with the stock gearing 6000rpm in top is an indicated 195km/h (just running her in, officer:Police:), but it has so little wind protection that a 6 footer like me is buffeted to sh** at over 130km/h. And the 'prillia is just a bit nicer than owning the equivalent Japper.

I had thought of buying a second Transalp ('mine' is actually my wife's) because the first one is so good, or a Tiger or summat, but, like you I couldn't bear the power drop. It is nice to have the oomph there when you need it, although at the pace I ride, the Transalp has more predictable handling and is more comfortable. That turned into a bit of an essay, didn't it.

To everyone else, sorry for the major thread drift. Now, where were we...

Not Good, would rip them off :woohoo:, have been on metal with 180 pilots though and was ok, just gas it to steer, riding position gives resonable control though suspension is a bit short, after all some nutter did a round the world on an R1, Tuono is virtually a motorcrosser by comparo;
Having said that I expect to replace my DR at some stage with a 950/990 and us Tuono for track
Hope all is well with you and familly

Skinny_Birdman
11th June 2009, 12:35
though suspension is a bit short,

Gross understatement!! Fork geometry is a bit too steep for comfort, too. I rode mine over the road in the Coromandel that goes past the water gardens. Bloody near shook the fillings out of my teeth, and spent the whole way worrying about the exposed rads and oil cooler.

Great trip back , Danseys pass was heavily snowed on the Naesby side , but not so bad on the Kurow side. Does anyone know if any other bikes got through on the Sunday morning ? We overtook some road bikes on the Kurow side but didn't see any fresh tyre tracks in the snow going up. We were spinning heaps going up and were running full knobs so would be impressed if any road bike guys got through. If anyone knows of any other bikes who got through Sunday morning let me know.

I actually know Mike quite well so Id confirm that, though we have yet to cross swords , on the metal it would be a Dog fight Id say, But DR800 runs out of puff at 160kph and my Liscence Runs out at 135 , could be dangerous, so heres hoping we never come to blows ( riding I mean )
If I get an Adventure myself someone may have to pick up the pieces of such a Dual, A Mick , Perhaps I wont Visit

Site cops should be along soon to ask me to remove pic as I think its to big ( sorry officer ) one of the Reasons I love Advrider so much is the Pics its all so colourful there

All I know is when we go riding the only bikes that hang in there on the gravel are other KTM 950/990'S The designer back in Austria did some seriously good work when he drafted up the big beast. DMC (cookie) is new to Adv riding and was always a long way back on his Africa Honda now he is riding at a very good pace and looking a lot safer and faster. The KTM is such a competent bike that average riders become great riders and good riders look like they factory pro's , slight exaggeration but you know what I mean. Ive owned and raced a lot of bikes inc GSXR1000', Aprilia RSVR, RG500 CBR900RR CBR600RR and I would rate the KTM 950S as the best bike ive ever owned. Off road it's an absolute weapon and onroad and I mean roads like the Akaroa, Rimutuka, Piecock Hill it is insane. The what is the best bike debate is a personal preference , but if you haven't ridden the 950 /990 ADV then give it a go ........... Great fun, and that's what motorcycling is about !

10bikekid
14th June 2009, 12:41
Bit of Chest Beating there Mick??

Na you know me just Kidding,
I would have taken your advice and bought one except for my track day asperations,
Just out of interest I rode several RSVs before buying Tuono and for overal ridabilty and comfort the Tuono is miles ahead

I think you have the right bike for what you do, unfortunatly the North Island is really playing second fidle in regards to the places to ride

Suspension compliance, it is interesting that when I ride roadbikes i notice a lot of feed back but on Adv bikes the road becomes smoother so comfort is very High on them, but on the Puke track the DR became a piece of jelly though it was ok at Taupo

I can see a KTM somewhere in my future , have your mates figured out how to fix the injection on the 990s yet or am I going to have to look for a mint 950
