Soon to be new rider (Rabid)

Hi all,

Well, my girlfriend got me my basic bike handling skills for my birhday and once i've done that i'm going to be getting my first bike. To say i'm excited is putting it far too mildly! :)

Anyway, I suppose this is a question which has put to you guys MANY times but, what is a good bike to start off on? I've been looking at quite a few (yet to actually sit on one though) and quite like the idea of soething along the lines of a suzuki bandit, Honda CBF or anything with that kind of style.

The ting is, what's a good price to spend on a bike at this stage? A 250 is only a stop-gap to bigger and better things so is it actually worth spending around $5k on it? Also, what do you guys reckon to the Hyosung bikes?

Actually, its my girlfriend who got me into the idea of bikes. She's been a biker for years and I just never got around to it (I was always more into diving) but now I've finally broken down and going to give it a try.

Quick question. In regards to 250's, are you still able to go for long-distance rides with them? I've seen adverts for the 250's and they all say things like "great commuter" etc. But, can we use them to go for trips?

Hey howsit going.. I just got my first bike and thought about that question too. Most 250's are small so it depends what size you are. As Im 6'2 105kg I couldnt fit the cbr250, zxr, ninja ect and I didnt want a VL250 (cruiser) and I also didnt want a Hyosung for there looks and build quality (just my personal opinion). I decided on a naked bike so it was really out of a vtr250 or a hornet and the hornets are bigger and go good & alright for touring so Ive heard. If you get a 250 that suits you theres no reason why you couldnt keep it for a year or so.. They dont devalue much

I had a hyosung and had no problems. Awesome bike to learn on. Also did some long trips with no issues at all.

Mind you I bought it new, and at your budget you will be looking second hand, with the associated risks.
