What are the general steps to painting fiberglass parts like a race cowling? Did a google search but on some sites it says not to use alcohol solvents to clean it, some say to do it, some say to use only a slightly rough paper on the first few layers of paint so the paint can grip, some say to get it all as fine as possible. Could someone help me out with what I'm supposed to do? And are there any specific paints to use? Or is it all pretty much the same as painting steel? Thanks for any help
ps, it's kind of weird, I thought this would have been asked before, but a search turns up nothing so I thought I'd ask anyway.

You need to use a primer compatible with your top coat paints. You might want to use a high solids primer to fill any pinholes or imperfections. Is the glass part gelcoated?

I know its late but it might help someone some day.

if its gelcoated then you want to sand i tdown with some 600 wet and dry. yoju can just use normal car paint, matching primer and top. give it a prime adn then give it a once over in a good light. the gel can sometimes have little bubbles that apper when you have sanded it back. only tiny ones. you cant see them till you prime it. so it may need a second coat of primer to fill them. then just treat it as normal.
