Cameron Horgan

Hello everyone.

Some of you might know and/or remember Cameron Horgan from Christchurch.
Cameron raced 125GP bikes for several years trying really hard to develop his skills against better and smaller riders. He had a go a 600 racing for a short while, but saw the light and came back to win the NZ 125GP title in 2007 against a very classy feild.

Unfortunately for us however, Cameron decided to take his own life late last week.

Cam was a complex young man, a good bike racer and talented blacksmith, but had had a few issues in his life over the past few years. Those around him though had thought and hoped that things were picking up for him.

I did not see him often, but always enjoyed seeing him at the race track, which had become less and less often.

A funeral will be held in Christchurch at 2pm on Friday 24 April at Lamb & Hayward, West Park Chapel, 467 Wairakei Road, Burnside.

A lap of honour will also be held at Ruapuna on Thursday afternoon around 3pm.

Yeah pretty gutting finding this out. I haven't seen him for a few years but he helped me quite a bit when I bought my first 125 and started out racing. The last time I saw him was when he had won the NZ champs, he was very stoked to do so after many years of trying. Very sad indeed...

I Knew Cam well,

We pooled our money together to buy an old Blue Mitzubishi van when his died, and we both had no money left to buy one alone, after buying our first RS125's (89 models) from Russell Bleach.

We travelled everywhere in that thing,all over the south Island racing our bikes (as well as buckets, trips to Blenhiem for Marty Woods black meetings, the HUNDALEE GRAND PRIX (at night, on an AX100 with no headlights), 2 up racing at Blenhiem..... Cam Push starting me when I wrecked my ankle and couldn't walk....but he made sure I rode the whole weekend. Borrowing Frank Woods Van and doing our first Nationals together (Cam got 6th, I got 8th)....that's how I remember him.

My favourite trip was going to the old kart track at Kaikoura, (when there was no 125 or bucket racing that weekend), spending the first 3 hours sweeping the track so we could ride our buckets round there all day, when as we finished, some dicks in an off roader came round the hill and did some laps on the course, destroying our work..... You should have seen Cams face....priceless!

There is literally hundreds of memories I have like that..... I could go on for days...... Such good times in my life, and glad to say he was there for them.

Real sad news, i was only talking to him on Easter Sunday, he was at the Westland Kart Club having a go on a Kart. He seemed to be enjoying himself. Talked about his plans to put a KTM engine in an RS125 chassis for F3.

probably one of the quickest guys around our local Kart track ever on a bucket.

So many great memories mate...

Having ridden on the road together for a couple of years Cam and I first went to Ruapuna to a novice day many many years ago. Cam borrowed an NSR250 that I had at the time and I rode my CBR400. After a huge day battling each other, with a couple of off track excursions!, we decided that we were pretty good. In the next session Jeff Cain passed us both as though we were going backwards and he was on a CBx250 (I think or similarly embarrassing bike!) lights, indicators and all.

Shit, so Cam bought an FZR400 and I bought another CBR400 and we got into it including a stint on the comittee where our best idea was changing the name of the Novice day to the Have a Go Day they are called now. We thought 'what ego head biker wants to be called a novice?' Politics at it's best!

I proceeded to strip just about every nut and thread on my bike which Cam always seemed happy(ish) to fix for me including a few very last minute ones ie 2am the night before a meeting. It was never a problem provided I bought the beer!

Cam proceeded to demonstrate that he could do a much better job engineering an FZR than Yamaha ever could with a raft of somtimes unconventional 'secret' modifications. He was very fast on this bike and I will always treasure my memories of some of Cam's passing 'moves', if you have raced cam you'll know what I mean! I got a new look collar bone, ribs and fingers courtesy cameron Horgan Design.

Ha! I just remembered, Cam suffered from a HUGE case of butterflies almost every race day. We almost always had to pull over for Cam to puke up his breakfast on the way to the track due to nerves, It must have been good for him because he would thrash us afterwards!

Cam, for these and so, so many more reasons you are a good bugger that I for one will miss deeply.

I guess I don't log on to this site as much as I should and am really sad to hear about what has happened to Cam. He was always so good to me, especially when my chips were down and he turned it round and we had many good times.
I have been trying to track him down as the old 1989 rs125 we built together has recently arrived here in England and I am going to run it again.
You were one of lifes real gems Mate, I'll never forget when you showed up with the others at Norena and my wedding with that Money tree, and you were bit late having been down at Timaru and won all of your three races.
Maybe you just didn't realise how much we all loved you Cam, I don't know, but you live on with me I will never forget you mate. So sorry.

Cam was one of the guys that always took interest in the new guys racing and was always very helpful. Top bloke!

have only just read this thread as i am not on here too often it is very sad news to have read about this tragedy he was a top man and a great help i remember my first time to ruapuna he put me up at his place helped me to get my bike running after some problems with it, helped me with a veiw of the track and each time i came back in after a run on the track for the LK 500 he was so enthusiastic about how I was going which made me want to press on more, later that day i crashed the bike my dad and cam also another bloke took the bike back to cams place where they gathered some parts told me to get some rest for the next days riding and were up till 3 am fixing it so i could get back out there without a fuss, one of the most helpful people you could ask for he never complained about helping anyone at all and enjoyed riding immensley did not see him often as i did not go south much but everytime i saw him in the north island there was always a good laugh to have, a top guy and he will be sadly missed by many my heart goes out to friends and family but he will never be forgotten always be in my mind.
