Anyone got any experience with these?

www.customskins.co.nz

Seems like a good idea. I keep reading how as a learner rider, it's not IF but WHEN i put the bike down. I'd be quite happy if the only damage occurred to a skin that could peel off  I first spied them on Trademe.

hey,

yep i put these on my bike and would with any bike i get from now on. they wouldnt save your bike if you put it down but they will stop stone chips or the paint rubbing where your legs go.

bloody good guys to deal with as well.

A cuzzy bro of mine had an HMX500 (bmx) & from day one he put insulation tape over his stickers(looked ugly but it preserved the stickers for when selling bike!).
The day came when it was time to sell the mighty HMX so when he took the insulation tape off....we all had a laugh! cause the paint had faded except where the tape was fitted:lol::lol:
Dunno wot effect will come from skins?...something to think about?

I was reading that the material is NOT UV resistant so doesn't stop the fade as badly as UV resistant materials. It supposedly can be removed years later and some polish with have it looking well blended... supposedly

I use venture shield on most of my high wear areas and it works great. I do it as a job so application is easy. As an inexperienced applicator yourselves, avoid soap, wipe down the panels before application with plenty of white spirit NOT PREPSOL etc and keep your workspace CLEAN and dustfree including your hands. Work out of sunlight and wrap your applicator/squeegee in a length of seamfree rag to help get the bubbles out.

Any other application questions, ask away.

Thanks. So one can use plenty of water too right? And it doesn't make sense to polish the panels that one wants to cover, as the white spirits will remove all the polish?

Ive used similar (the old clear film) on one of my bikes for years, great stuff,65000 kms and not one stone chip on the fairings, even put some on the fork legs which are still as new.Fwiw a roll or 2 of the old stuff is well cheaper.

Update: Got the Custom Skins on my Ninja today. They're awesome! Simon is a great guy to deal with! I highly recommend him and his product! You can't really tell they're on there so I think the above comments are right. They'll stop the stone chips and decent scratches etc but if I go for a slide, there'll probably still be some decent damage :Punk:
Anyway, I think he does heaps of different types of bikes so give him a bell if you're keen. I think he'll be doing KB members a deal in the future too :soon:

Its a 3M Paint protection film. Have been using the 3M stuff for ages on my bikes. They can also be bought seprately in a roll.

Have used it on the tank / side / front / tiedown area. Also over the headlights. Seems custom skins have imported pre cut kits from US for bikes, lease thats what it looked like.

If you bike goes down, it will go thru the skins. However areas that are just rubbed against lightly will be protected.

Our film is not made by 3m. Our film cannot be purchased in shops in a blank roll, so dont get confused with other products.

Our film is made by Ventureshield, they are competition to 3m. We have computerised cutters and every bike or car kit is computer cut to order, we have the rights to all the patterns from USA & Europe, and we also draw our own patterns.

The film also has a Lifetime Warranty against yellowing & shrinking.

We are looking at putting together a deal for Kiwibiker members soon.

Thanks custom skins,
Look foward to hearing about the deals you will have. As I spend a lot of time cutting mine from the 3M rolls as it could potentially save me a lot of time.

Cheers

Lets Get Graphic here in Chch do these same computer cut ventureshield kits, so no big deal. Some of the best money I've spent, definitely a lot better value for money than crash bobbins.

I had my Bike protected with the 3m stuff 6 years ago after a paint touch up. Its great, no stone chips. Polish other parts of bike like normal and use Plexus on the plastic protection. Brings it up mint.

Ah but Crash Bobbins are there for a different job. Paint protection film is there to do just that, protect the paint from stone chips and wear from gear etc. Crash bobbins are installed to protect against damage from a fall which will also ensure your paint protection film is still intact. Trust me, even a small tip over in a garage can stuff the protection film....experience has taught me that.

Trust me, even a small tip over in a garage can stuff the protection film....experience has taught me that. It's a lot better value in as much as you reap the benefits every time you ride. The only time my crash protection does me any good is when it gets me home from wherever I've tipped, that's all it does. The film stops me getting stone chips on any given day. Hell given I have roadside rescue etc, I could do without the crash protection completely (and on most of my bikes I do)... lets face it, even a tip at no speed is a visit to the insurance company (for new bobbins/skid plates/bar end/lever, if nothing else), so if it doesn't save me from sitting around waiting for a tow truck, it's both ugly and worthless. Thus, better value for money.

Read and understood:laugh: but they could make the difference between rightoff and fix. You are correct though. I have paint protection and no crash bobbins on both bikes. Need the bobbins for the one going to the track where there will be no insurance cover. Not sure about worthless but I humbly agree.......................

Only worthless when it's doing nothing but looking ugly mind!

I'm not sure whether I'd prefer write off or fix. If they fix it, it's still my original one owner bike I guess, elbeit a bit raped (i.e. the scars are on the inside) . I think my preference would be just to take the money, add the short fall, and get another new one.
