View Full Version : Another fine...

So yea... riding into uni on the north western today, no L plate, ne rego and no warrant.
JUST paid for new sprockets, chain and brake shoes and was going to get a new rear tyre from cycletreads this weekend as I had to wait for cash, then get me warrant etc and BAM!!!
Yet ANOTHER $800 fine. And what's worse it is from the SAME cop who gave me the first $800 fine! Must have it in for me.
So yea, I've decided to save up a bit of cash over the next month or so and get something bigger. Sitting my restricted either in the weekend or next week so at least I'll have that.
My question is.... anyone got smoething a little bigger for around the $2000 - $2500 mark? Will take me a little while to come up with the cash, got $500 at the moment. can't be fucked spending MORE money on my bike... figured if I''m gonna get fines I might aswell get them riding something bigger. I saw FROSTY's z750 but that's a little out of my price range for now.
I'm fed up.
FUCK, FUCK THE POLICE!!

Yeah - it must be the cop has it in for you. :Tui:
If you are stupid enough to keep doing the same things then you deserve all tickets you pick up.
no point is saying fuck the police - you seem to be doing a fine job of fucking yourself.

Not really, you have 28 days to get the bike WoF'd, rego'd, and then you can write in and ask to be let off the WoF and Rego fines.
The cop is stopping you because he think's you're riding an unrego'd, unwof'd bike. Get your shit sorted.
Also, ride with the L plate. It does you as many favours as the respect that it loses you.
Finally, don't be a dick, ride the 250 until you have the experience to ride a larger displacement bike.

You, sir, are an idiot of the first order!
If you can't afford to keep your bike in warrantable condition, regoed, WOFed, and insured then you should prolly stick to a pushbike.
You could always take the $500 and use it to get your current bike up to standard.
That cop probably has it in for every slow learner....fancy fining you for breaking the law.
What a cheek!

Not to mention all the insurance hassles if you have an accident and are riding outside the terms of your license on a 'big boys bike'.
If anything goes wrong - it could be a fuck load more expensive than a $800 fine.

I ride with the L plate off cos that's what made me get pulled over the first time... riding on the motorway at 80k with an L plate....

Bugger - bad luck mate.
Although you really should have sorted it after the last fine.
Get a warrant, get the Rego - go to the $2 shop and get an L plate.
That will avoid another $800 fine and then you can keep that cash in your pocket for a bigger bike.

Okay, everyone stop mocking the boy, most of us have been young and dumb at some stage. And Metalor, stop getting angry, what is, already is.
You will need to pay for the rego from the last date of registration.
Some cold hard facts - get your rego and wof with your $500. Get it legal or you pay $1600 in fines. $500 is less than $1600, right?
Second - you have no right to ride a bike that won't pass a WoF on the road. If you drop the bike, you could lose skin. I'm not your mommy, and I don't care - but you should.
Third - A larger displacement bike is a little more expensive to live with. Ignoring insurance, WoF and Reg, my thou gets a new rear every 6-8 weeks if I use it every day. $400 ish a time. New chain frequently as well. If you think buying a larger bike will make things cheaper, you're fooling yourself.
Fourth, the jump from a Tu250 to a Z750 is a big 'un. Grand canyon big. If you ride with the throttle control that use on the TU, you'll be road kill.
Finally, you're on a site filled with people who have gone through the learning curve, paid their dues, and have time and effort invested. Show respect to them and yourself, do it the correct way.
Take it easy out there.
EDIT - Before you tell Donor to fuck off, he is the guy who'll be picking you up if your unwarranted bike with non-legal tires hits the deck. Calm down, and heed the message.

Haha this is entertaining.
I was young once (still am actually) and I never really had a "hate the pigs" mentality when I got fined or pulled over for dumb stuff I was doing because, in the scheme of it all, it was me doing the dumb stuff and I was just getting snapped by the people employed to...well...snap people like me!
If you were clever you would have stopped riding after the first time you got done for no WOF etc, instead of continuing to ride and then get all aggro when you get done for the same thing again!
One point that irritated me about your post was that you mention you are broke because you are a student.
I'm not a student and I'm broke! I had to save up my dosh for about a year before I could afford to buy my first bike, including all the associated costs that go with vehicle ownership. I didn't go out and buy one, then complain when I got snapped doing something dodgy and moan about not having money to get the bike legit. SAVE YOUR MONEY and get the bike legit before riding it - you could have avoided all of this. You are lucky enought to have avoided some serious injury by crashing due to your worn rear rubber.

I don't think it's "okay" as such but i know there are situations where you can't afford reg or wof. It is bloody EXPENSIVE!!!
If you don't have it you risk making your insurance void (i think) and depending on your bike. That could be a lot more of a punishment than $800 in fines that this "pig" gave you.

Look - I've been there. Student days riding a fun bike that was outside the law (WoF only but it was still outside the law) and I hit a car. So - I had to pony up with the money and pay the guy.
It hurt like a bitch but it was a good lesson.
Me thinks the couple of fines might just be that same lesson - who'd have thought? The cop doesn't hate you. It might be an idea to consider the cop as someone enforcing the law... you broke it. You pay. That's the way it works. Not good or bad - not right or wrong - it's just the way it works.
The cop is simply doing their job. Accept it - stop making yourself a target for fines and move on. There's some good advice in here on minimising the financial impact - so take it, put your pride to one side for a sec and just deal with it.

there was a kid at my work a few weeks back who kept on messing up the kitchen getting more and more toast and making coffee after coffee. he got kicked off after he called mum a cunt for kicking him out of the kitchen. at the same time, he bitched and moaned about having no food or place to live. wonder whos fault that was? certainly not my mothers fault. he also cut up some seats in a van and tagged the back of one seat... that tag never did come off.
dude, there are heaps of ways to get extra moolah. sell some stuff on tardme, like i am. quit wasting any spare money on booze or smokes [if you drink or smoke] and only buy what you need, not what you want. getting a bigger bike, and then getting caught on it, will only make the figure on the fine higher. admittedly, i rode a 500 on my learners, but i never rode like an idiot, and hey, i never got caught. you really need to suck it up, and learn from the lessons given to you. most people would have learned after the first fine that it hurts if you let things get out of date.

OK ok, I wasn't riding like an idiot, I was doing 105 on the motorway in the right hand lane , HE was doing 120 so I got in the left hand to let him pass. He slowed down later on and I slowly caught up to him. I got in front, he obviously either recognised my bike or ran my plates and pulled me over.
The VERY first thing he said to me when I said "Hi ya mate" was "where are your L plates" so he obviously knew.
I don't ride like a dick (most of the time). The reason I got the bike in the first place was for convenience... to those of you telling me to catch the bus, it's actaully much MUCH cheaper for me to ride into town than to catch the bus... and I can park at uni. Saves about 2.5 hours in the day aswell.
Anyway, I knew I what I was doing was against the law, just thought he could hav ebeen a nice guy after I explained my situation(just needing a rear tyre as it's just past minimum tread depth and I'm saving). Shit, it's not like I'm hurting anyone, I'm only gonna hurt myself if I come off.
I'm not being a 'tough guy', I'm generally a really nice guy, but I know these pricks wouldn't be laughing in my face in person.

It is never ok to ride unless you are fully legal in everyway. Having said that, we all have at some point in our lives. I have been guilty of both the terrible crimes of driving and riding (though less so riding) of no WOF and/or no Rego. Mostly this has been pure over sight on my part but I have knowingly done it as well when times were tough. Risk management it is called.
Why did he stop you? Were you speeding? Lane splitting? I've found that when I have some legal hiccup that if I keep a low profile I don't get stopped....usually.
Yes and aint that the truth right there, keep your nose clean, dont speed or draw attention to yourself and likely you will "get away" with it. Mind out for the random compulsory stops though.
Best practise is keep it legal all the time.

Fuck off. No, he didn't. He came up against reality. Just like everyone else does. And why should it be up to 'us older KBers' to educate him? He came in here ranting about the 'poor me' thing, wanting a shoulder to cry on. He got what he deserved (both situations) and being pinged for the same thing twice just proves he's not teachable, anyway. FFS, he even tried to tell us that he's been all road legal since the last time, when he told us in the preceding post that he hasn't had a reg since Sept last year.

He posted this thread to have a bleat about getting done for the second time for the same thing, by the same cop, who the OP thinks has it in for him. The fact taht he is broke and just racked up a further big fine also seems to be a problem. You can not call it a shit experience, he must have calculated the risk he was taking and found it acceptable to him.
See this is where I get a bit confused. If you knowingly do something that is illegal, and you already know the penalty, how the hell can you bleat about getting caught out?

Shit, it's not like I'm hurting anyone, I'm only gonna hurt myself if I come off.
Ah the young........
You could or will hurt the following people:
1.The kid waiting to cross the road to go to school that your bike slides into.
2.The Ambo person who has to pick you up off the road and take you to hospital. Heads up - they do not enjoy seeing people in pain.
3.Anyone who treats you at hospital. Heads up - they do not enjoy seeing people in pain.
4.Anyone who cares about you and suffers watching you in pain.
5. Your unborn children who won't be born as you tore your scrotum off on the instrument cluster on your way off the bike.....
6. Anyone who has a job and is paying taxes to cover your arse reconstruction via ACC.
Out of interest WHY where you not displaying the L plate after previously being in trouble for not having one.

I can tell you for a fact I would laugh in your face in person.
I'm no "senior" member either but I wouldn't excuse your stupidity on the basis of age. Four pages into the thread and you're still sounding like a tit.
If you can't afford a tire/WOF/rego etc you can't afford to ride bikes. No matter how you wanna rationalise it the bus is the better option for you unless you wanna keep running the gauntlet which, it seems, you are not particularly good at.

My intention was to tell the story of what happened and ask if anyone knows some cheap bikes for sale cos if I'm gonna pay fines, I might aswell spend do it on a bigger bike.
Didn't appreciate the "you're a cunt, you're a fucking dick" laughing in my face, but fuck it, you guys can be pig headed fucking grandads if you want, cos you all know soooooo much more better than I do.
So yea, next time I'll just keep my mouth shut so I don't have to be a target for you guys to feel awesome, and making my day just that little bit shitter.
NB: Just got a new rear tyre fitted at cycletreads and have booked in for a warrant on saturday. Cheers.
Just chill man......

a lot of us older riders have been through this shit
the fines wernt as big..

The young, world-owes-me types all come a cropper, sooner or later. He's not special in that regard.
He is young as am I, you cant expect him to not make mistakes like this, he is a teenager, I'm sure when you were a teenager you did bad things repetitively. He needs to be educated by the older in years and more wiser (funny that i had a thread about the older blokes). And think of this in a open perspective, be it he didnt obey the law either way getting a $800 fine is a shit experience. Im not saying he is innocent and deserves sympathy, metalor owned up and obviously wasnt proud of what he has done.
Does he have to get mean comments from everyone? after all he did say he doesent care what people say on the internet, but many still persist.

Okay, so for next time, it's actually okay to sit behind a cop, and honestly, it's often the best policy. He could have nailed you for doing 105, on an L plate. Sounds like he cut you some slack...
Realistically, you should expect to get the (deserved) shit that you've gotten. You can get angry about that, or ignore the noise and learn the point. This is a brutally Darwinian activity that you're engaged in. Most of us have been to quite a few funerals over the years. Taking chances on the basics mean the foundation is flawed. Further, a motorcycle is no place for an angry person, they become road kill inevitably.
Finally - your audience on this site range from accountants to ambo's/cops/firefighters/Marines/martial artists/dealers/patch wearing members. You'd be well advised to chill out a bit, there are people on here who wouldn't hesitate to say whatever they wanted in your face. There is enough trouble without going and looking for it.

If he really didn't care then it wouldn't have bothered him in the least, and he wouldn't be trying to do stand-over via the internet.
Which is what brought on more mocking and chuckles.

Yes it is a windup. I'm wound up.
You should be pissed off , there are people that go to court for burglery , assault , stealing bikes , stealing cars ,backing over children in their drive, tourists on the wrong side of the road killing NZ citizens , parents putiing their kids in hospital from a beating who all get a less fine than you in many cases and they are actually a real criminal unlike you whos just a bloke who hasnt squared up his paper work in effect , the law is an ass and the punishment seldom fit the crime , you have my sympathies.
perhaps this is why more young motorists than ever are failing to respect or even stop for police

Wow tough talking seems to be the thing around here.So here goes.
You did wrong! both times and so far you haven't learned anything of value.
We've all been where you are and we've all thought the world was against us.
The collective advice from almost everyone here is to suck it up get the bike sorted and get on with life.
But no you threaten to break heads.I'll be available anytime anywhere to let you try if that's seriously what you want to do.
Otherwise my advice is the same as the rest of the members here, get over yourself, get the bike legal and boy if you think riding for 2 years is enough to be competent on a big bike You're way wrong!

That's funny also because he isn't bothered with what people say, and yet more hateful rude comments are posted on this thread. So why would a person still post a rude comment to metalor, this somewhat eludes me(note sarcasm).:rolleyes: That's pretty self explanatory.

So yea... riding into uni on the north western today, no L plate, ne rego and no warrant.
Here we go again...........
Ixion
22nd April 2009, 19:09
Sigh. Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the guiltiest of all?
OK. Think about this.
1. When riding in breach of the law (yes many people do do it. The rest of you had best hurry up or you'll be late for church), it is very wise to attempt very hard to only breach ONE law at a time. This gives you a better chance of getting off, or at the least of NOT having the cop go over you with a fine tooth comb. So, if you have no rego, make sure your WoF is up to date, if you should have L plates fit them, ride like a cop was behind you - cos maybe he is. No WoF, keep your rego current (renew it the day before your last WoF expired) . But also, take into account that you may get caught. Like someone said, it's a risk assessment exercise. Done wisely it can save you a lot of money. But, if or when you get caught don't moa n about it. You did the math, accepted the rsik.
2. If you do have to leave your rego for a significant time (more than three months) put it on exemption. In practice the penalty for getting caught riding it is no worse (and it's probably eaiser to spin a yarn about having spent the last three months fixing it up, just testing it out blah blah). And it means you don't get hit with the back rego when you do legalise it.
3. Recognise that you now have a cop on the look out for you. See it from his point of view. He stops you once, minor technical breach, L plate and over 70. Probably if everything had been in order he'd have given you an avuncular warning and sent you on your way. But once he's stopped you , he finds - No WoF. Then - no Rego. Well, he thinks , this puppy doesn't seem to have the slightest respect for the law. I better teach him some. Then lo and behold, he sees you again. And you are STILL just as illegal. Say, what do you think he's going to do when he spots you next ? (And cops are VERY good at remembering people they want to remember). So, riding outside condition of licence - and a premediated example of it , not just a "caught out after 10pm". That's $400 and 25 demerits. Everytime he catches you. And , oh man, WILL he be looking for you.
4. So, where is the logic in getting a bigger bike? It's going to cost you , both in initial cost , in maintainence (a 750 sprots bike will cost a LOT more to run than a Volty - if you can't afford tyres for a Volty, don't even contemplate what it would cost for a 750). And cost in fines when that cop catches. And he will. Even on a different bike he'll recognise you. Might even be sneaky enough to check what bike you own for a while. Yes they are that sneaky. BTW : I don't understand this, generally. Every time I see a thread from someone on a 250 complaining that they've crashed , or that they've been pinged for riding outside licence conditions, like as not their solution is "I'm going to get a big bike". Duh ? It does not compute. If you can't handle a 250 -and the fact that you crashed (not you Mr Metalor, this is a generic 'you') proves that point , then a bigger bike is just going to mean more painful crashes. And if the complaint is the cops picking on you, believe me they'll pick on you even worse, if you add another breach of conditions.
5. Reality 101. When you are poor (be it as a student , or whatever) you CAN'T AFFORD a bike as a toy. You need to regard your bike as transport. And as cheap as possible. Certainly have some fun on it too, and it is indeed possible to have plenty of fun on a Volty. But the fancy sprots bike must wait until you are not poor.
Get your restricted. That'll get the L plate problem sorted. Get a WoF and some rego. Ride around a bit. See if you can find that cop! Then brown nose him for all you're worth. "Thank you so much for making me see how foolish I was - see I've got my restricted , WoF Rego. I now realise how out of line I was, and that my finances were no excuse. " Blah blah. Grovel. It works. I have a splendid line in self deprecating grovel, it's talked me out of many a ticket. Hopefully that'll get the cop off your back. Save the money a big bike would cost to keep the 250 at least vaguely legal.
BTW I don't see a worn tyre on a 250 as that big a deal- and rego is just a tax, I have NO moral compunctions about it all
Second the comment about riding BEHIND cops. I HATE a cop behind me, I'll turn off at the first opportunity.
And finally , was this by any chance a bikey cop. I ask only because last week I happened to come up behind a bikey cop industriously lane splitting. Well, thinks I , sauce, goose , gander, and tucked in behind him. He finally pulled in behind a group of three bikes, all riding in a lane (the traffic wasn't that heavy didn't need to lane split much, doing about 70 odd). And kept behind them, even when they changed lanes. And finally, reds and blues, and pulls one of them over - thought for a moment it was me. Reasin I wonder is because I thought at the time "Huh? Woz he done ? He wasn't speeding, didn't see him do anything wrong, clearly knew there was a cop there, signalling and stuff. Why ?"

Cheers man, that' s actually a very constructive post. Nah, he was driving a station wagon, was probably around 60 years old and he was a pom (I think).
Yea, the bike is my only transport, it's waaaaaaaay cheaper than the bus which is why I got it in the first place (was even cheaper to pay off the loan AND pay for gas than catching the bus into town).
After I've calmed down a bit, I'll just wait till I've finished uni before I get a bigger bike. Not after a sports bike, an M50 sounds like my cup of tea to be honest. Can still commute on it and cruise on the weekends :)
I was just fed up with shit, and have been wanting a bigger bike for a while and what happened this morning made me think "fuck it, if I'm gonna get fines I might aswell get a bigger bike anyway!"

Learn well young fella, the second time a copper pulls you over for the same offense it is really very unlikely he will listen to your hard luck story about being broke. It didn't work the first time either. Life is NOT FAIR!
NB: Just got a new rear tyre fitted at cycletreads and have booked in for a warrant on saturday. Cheers.
Well done!

Was on the north western about 11:50... I know a bigger scooter passed me (and the cop) but I think it was silver.
Yep, that's about the right time, I passed an older bike with 'volty' written on the side of the tank. The scooter is definitely red, if it was clean it would look a lot like my avatar.
Don't worry about all the abuse, I'm pretty sure you know you fucked up without everyone telling you. This is just 'kicking a man while he is down' KB style. "Hey guys there is a guy who got busted and fined $800" followed by "ooh, where's the thread - I gotta call him a dick so he'll feel even worse". It's a shame the cop couldn't have been a bit nicer and just pinged you for the WoF/Reg - $400 is plenty, who gives a fuck about the stupid 'L' plate anyway, it is hardly a safety issue.

Not to mention all the insurance hassles if you have an accident and are riding outside the terms of your license on a 'big boys bike'.
If anything goes wrong - it could be a fuck load more expensive than a $800 fine.

sounds about right for a big bike - in the summer every litre of gas through the busa costs $1 in rear tyre - $1.30 if I add the front on. doesn't take long at 400 - 500kms/week

Matalor, we are simply responding in kind.If you had more about what you were positively going to do and less about how nasty we all are we might show some sympathy.
I've had experience , first hand of uninsured motorcyle riders, who have no money for WOF's Rego's and tires etc. Guess what, I don't like them anymore.
oh and guess what else, they usually don't have their licence yet either, at all! .
Now then stop the ranting and get on with fixing up your "just smashed up a bit" Volty and getting your fines sorted and come back and tell us what a great ride you had next week, we'll be able to enthuse with you and encourage you to ride with all the boxes ticked.
No one here wants to kick you while you are down, but you keep getting side tracked and threatening to do things that make us all soooooooooo scared.Come on lets see this not so bad dude.

Well, thing is I'm broke as fuck. JUST got some cash. I'm a student man, so $260 for a rego and shit is pretty hard if you can only just manage to pay for the parts. Hasn't been rego'd since last september... so I don't like my chances of getting of on that. I'll try on the liscense though.
I ride with the L plate off cos that's what made me get pulled over the first time... riding on the motorway at 80k with an L plate....
and madbikeboy... I've been riding for over 2 years now, and I'm definitely outriding the TU250 by now... Just haven't had the cash to pay for my restricted. Ahhhh life...
Wake up, we're all suffering financially but some of us prioritise. If you've already been fined once, get your shit together and either use public transport until you can afford to get things legal, or stop whining about the cops picking on you. Doing 80kph with an L plate will get you pulled over so why do it? Especially if you're on an unwarranted and unregistered bike?
You are a fuckwit and I doubt any of us has any sympathy for you. If you can't afford to get everything sorted you have to face facts - you can't afford the bike at this point in time.
And guess what? Now that cop has got you twice, he WILL be keeping an even sharper eye out for you. Please don't come back here next week and moan about copping another $800 fine because we won't be listening.

well, if it makes you feel any better, I feel some sympathy for you. I've had numerous fines for not having a WoF/Reg in cars, usually because I didn't have the time/money to get my car up to a WoF standard (i've been a student on and off for a total of about 6 years I guess). Also, I can appreciate how disheartening it can be to land a big fine, and it makes you angry and you want to blame someone for it. Unfortunately, you can only blame yourself.
You say the bike is cheaper than the bus - presumably this is on a daily cost basis, rather than averaged over time including the other expenditure on the bike that you've mentioned, which by the sounds of it would add up to about 2.5k? If you include the $1600 of fines you've mentioned.
At the end of the day you're the one making the decisions, and you have to be man enough to accept when your decisions fuck you in the ass - as they often will. I know I've made plenty of bad calls in regards to this kind of thing, but I just accept it and move on - the only time I ever bitch about the cops or try to gain any form of sympathy is the one time I was most definitely victimised by an asshole cop.
Oh an as mentioned - if you tell them you're about to get your WoF then they'll sometimes give you a time period in which to get it and they will waive the fine

Not a myth actually. I got pulled up for doing 70 in a 50 area, at the time my WoF was out by about a month, and I explained that I was waiting for the first pay from my summer job so I could afford to get my WoF, and the officer wrote on my ticket "14 days compliance" (still had to pay the speeding fine, obviously). I got my WoF within that time and sent a letter to the appropriate people and they waived it. No sucking cock but maybe the female officer was simply overwhelmed by my charm and rugged good looks?

Unless the law has changed, you have 28 days to rego or wof a vehicle and the police have the ability, if they so choose, to let you off. Don't try that with a local council, if you get ticketed you have to pay the fine no matter what.

as for metalor, why cant you see that buying a bigger bike will NOT solve your problems? instead, it will only make them bigger and harder to pay off. i mentioned in another thread that i had a 500. as much as i loved the bike, and the extra power, i knew i couldnt afford the fines if i got caught on it, so i sold it.
i was also very close to selling my 250 over xmas due to lack of funds to pay rego and wof. instead, i made things happen and got a temp night job. in the long run, i was keener to sell the bike than rack up fines for riding illegally. why not put your studies on hold and work for a year, saving your money?

I'm for anyone getting an education, regardless of what it is. I worked hard through uni, lived like a pauper, gave up life aside from working 3 jobs and studying. It's starting to pay back now. 7 years was an investment, and I'm glad I did it, just the unique opportunities alone.
He's getting his bike sorted, it's up to him to take the risk, he's a grown up.
Metalor, look up a mentor in your area, get some proper tuition from them - then sit your restricted with more skills and confidence. You need to lose the aggression, you can't ride angry. This bunch is a good bunch, but if you show them disrespect by waving your dick at them, they will hammer you in return.
Do it the correct way, show some respect, a lot of these guys have more skill and experience than you can comprehend right now, and to them, you look like someone who needs a hammering.

Funny, I can deal with that shit but can't seem to get my head around the fact that I'm not allowed to ride a non-warranted/rego'd bike. Maybe I'll learn one day.
And yes, I did ride today :)
Warrant is booked for sat, booking my restricted tomorrow. Not that you guys care anyway.
You are all really nice people :)
What got people started wasn't really the fact you were riding a non-legal bike around, breaking the law and so. To be honest, if the KB kangaroo court had to have a collective seizure every fucking time one of our resident knuckle-draggers were in breach of statute this or legislation that we would be in an electronic epileptic fit 90% of the time.
Just don't bid for sympathy or look to blame anyone else when your shit catches up with you. That is all really.
At least you are doing a degree that might actually take you somewhere - and if it doesn't at least it is challenging.
And despite all the tough love being sent your way, I can only say I haven't met a single person on here who wasn't a good bastard in real life. Give it a week, roll with the blows, ...

Don't waste your breath mate, the university-of-life-brigade doesn't want to hear about that part of it. After all, to some people, anyone with a degree is an arrogant, good-for-nothing arse. That's not to say that they aren't correct sometimes... ;)

3. Recognise that you now have a cop on the look out for you.
This is the thing, the OP now has a cop watching out for him (plus whoever else of his Police colleagues he laughed about this with...).
I have some sympathy for the OP, he doesn't come across as the sharpest knife in the drawer, but then again it may just be a generational thing.
There have been times I have been so broke I couldn't pay all the fees on time, maybe not even the same month (or year?). If you choose to do that though, you know the risk and you know the consequences if caught. No good whinging if it all goes pear shaped.
Our hero now has at least one cop actually watching out for him so the risk factor has gone up exponentially. He really does need to make the bike legal.
Or give it a quick and dirty paint job, and steal a different helmet:devil2:

Just wondering if you guys reckon its okay to ride a bike with WoF but no rego?
You're asking us if we think it's okay to break the law..?
It is never ok to ride unless you are fully legal in everyway. Having said that, we all have at some point in our lives. I have been guilty of both the terrible crimes of driving and riding (though less so riding) of no WOF and/or no Rego. Mostly this has been pure over sight on my part but I have knowingly done it as well when times were tough. Risk management it is called.
Yes and aint that the truth right there, keep your nose clean, dont speed or draw attention to yourself and likely you will "get away" with it. Mind out for the random compulsory stops though.
Best practise is keep it legal all the time.
Now you listen to Mom, young fella...
CHeers to the people hwo are being reasonable. I said I KNOW I was taking a risk, I got caught. Was wanting a cheap bigger bike, they can just tag those fines on the end too.
I'm not acting macho at all, I said I FALT like cracking some heads because certain peple on here were being utter pricks. Somehow me saying "hey, this happened to me" qualifies for getting abuse hurled at me. That is awesome. It's not like I was beating up some elderly person or anything, just fucked up whilst not hurting anyone. But no, just abuse.
Cheers.
I think that as others have said, you knew full well what you were doing, yet blamed the Cops. If you'd come on here and said you'd been an idiot and got what you deserved and "please everyone, take a lesson from my mistakes," you would have got a different reception.

Yea, last time I got the fine I was actually in the process of getting it warranted and rego'd and got it the next week. didn't know I could write in a tell them I'd gotten it though... so ended up paying for it (still paying it off).
Last fine was over a year ago, I have had it road legal since then. Fuck it, i'll just tell them to add it on to the ones I'm paying off.

To all you armchair critics giving this guy a hard time for "not learning" or preaching about "you think it's ok to break the law" or accusing him of wanting a shoulder to cry on... ya might feel better if you remove the carrot from that orifice! :moon: Easy for you to say when your bike is up to scratch, and you haven't had tickets for anything, and you've got a bit of money to keep the thing going, and you've never been pulled over by a cop and given a bollocking about some transgression (... assume all that applies to you, right?).
Being a penniless student is a pain in the arse. Every dollar counts, that's why you get a bike in the first place! And a dollar saved using the bike instead of other transport, is another dollar to put towards fixing it up (hence the temptation to keep using it).
Suggestion: go get some more sleep, then clean your eyes out and re-read his post: all he's doing is sharing what happened, and asking advice on a bike purchase. He's quite allowed to feel pissed at getting hundreds of $ of fines... yes, he broke the rules, but so what? Who hasn't? Whatever!

Doesn't that mean your fines will just be bigger next time? Seems to me that when you are running out of money you shouldn't be looking for more, creative ways to have it escape your wallet. It's going to sound silly, but have a look at www.sorted.org dot whatever. I can never remember the URL, although my 3 year old can probably find it. Or chat to some friends about budgeting. I feel like a tool everytime I watch it, but Moneyman is actually useful for tips on saving.
You'll enjoy that M50 a lot more when you don't have to worry about where the next tire or service is going to come from. I know. I've got another 6 months of saving before I can afford mine and then I've still got to pass my full :)

Sucks about getting busted twice but heres the thing. He either stops riding because he cant afford it or he gets a job that will pay for his habit.
I was a student 20 years ago but the basics don't change eg permanently broke, mounting debts etc. Before I went to uni I got a job and saved like a bastard. When at uni I had a part time job and in the breaks I did whatever shit work came my way. At various times I went without food, textbooks and more importantly beer. All to keep the bike on the road.
Don't think that is relevant today? A young guy starting at work did exactly what I did and now has a 250 Ninja all paid for. In fact he has just bought his g/f a MX5 and is on top of his student loan.

The only reason I have money to keep my vehicles up to standard is because I budget the little income I do have...as do a lot of us.

trouble is though, a lot of kids have been raised to "have it, and have it 5 mins ago" so they dont know how to budget or place things in order of importance. thankfully, some kids have been raised right, and know they have to work in order to get what they desire, and they know its not all going to be handed to them on a silve platter.

Aint that the god honest truth.
I have no idea how we manage to pay for the mortgage, all the household bills, food and clothing for 4, run the car, etc etc off my single wage. But we do it, we budget for every single dollar and if we can't afford it then it doesn't happen. And if I went and got $800 worth of tickets then birthdays and Christmas for the kids would have to be cancelled to pay for my fuckup.

What an utter crock of shit!! This sort of thing is typical of the self-serving excuse-ridden attempts by the OP to justify his lack of judgement and twisted perspective of reality.
Fair enough, you don't berate him for his 'errors', but rather than supporting his excuses, you could have at least given him some sensible advice...
Like why doesn't he get a new scooter (like yours) for fuck-all down and $20pw? He'd get a new set of wheels, with a guarantee, runs on the smell of an oily rag, is legal for him to ride, no maintenance issues to speak of, cheap reg and NO WOF reqd.
That'd be a bit sensible tho, wouldn't it? Back under your bridge, young troll.

25th April 2009, 11:29
Not really, you have 28 days to get the bike WoF'd, rego'd, and then you can write in and ask to be let off the WoF and Rego fines.
The cop is stopping you because he think's you're riding an unrego'd, unwof'd bike. Get your shit sorted.
Also, ride with the L plate. It does you as many favours as the respect that it loses you.
Finally, don't be a dick, ride the 250 until you have the experience to ride a larger displacement bike.
What he says...
Don't blame the coppers, they didn't ask you to ride a bike with no wof, reg, l plate etc!
Don't get me wrong, i am not all that squeeky clean myself and I know neither is Madbikeboy...but we aint bitching about it :jerry:

Well if you can afford to get a bike around the 3k range as you suggested, why not consider something like an older ZXR or CBR that may be a bit scratched but runs mint? I tell ya now, you will outhandle most older cruiser or 'semi sports' bikes when it comes to the corners!

Fair enough. Metalor certainly isn't doing doing himself any favours: getting caught twice for the same thing isn't the smartest thing to let happen. $800 would be 6 months of bus fare for me; I'd far rather give that to the buses than to the Government! And he really should budget for bus fares when his bike is not road-legal. Getting a new/near-new scooter would be the way to go (stuff on trademe for $2k looks pretty nice), or just a random Japanese 250cc four-stroke would be sweet. My GN250 was an excellent bike! Reliable, torquey, comfortable sitting position for city riding - even if it did sound like a lawn mower LOL.
Not really supporting his excuses - and I don't think he was actually trying to make any... just trying to see things from his side. And noting his positive attitude. Fact remains that his transgression was not directly hurting anyone, so I couldn't care less (so long as I'm not getting the fine :shifty:)
All people do when heaping crap on others is make themselves look like immature morons (not that they'd care though eh?).
BTW: not quite right about the rego and WOF for my particular model:
Rego: it's actually more than a car! (It was cheaper for mopeds some years ago though.)
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/licensing-fees.html :
- Passenger car
Petrol driven - Private $211.84
- Motorcycle
Petrol driven - Less than 61 cc - $ 255.96
Petrol driven - Over 61 cc - $267.21
WOF:
The AN125 is classed as a motorcycle (due to it's power output and top design speed), so it needs WOF checks.
From http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/factsheets/43.html
... a moped has a power output of 2 kW or under and a maximum design speed of 50 km/h or under. A vehicle with a power output over 2 kW or a maximum design speed over 50 km/h is a motorcycle. It is illegal to register a motorcycle as a moped.
But yes, scooter is really cheap to run, and really nippy too. Highly recommended (but only up to 70-80k though).

I suppose so... point taken! Have to agree with that.
Right then Metalor: big ups for sorting out ya bike, and the positive attitude. But seriously mate: get a bus until your bike is legal... the alternative isn't worth the expense. If you tell us you got busted a third time, I for one will be less than impressed.
As for which bike.... IMHO any well-maintained Japanese 4-stroke should see you right. But get the best you can afford. I wouldn't recommend, for example, my AN125 for the motorway; probably 250cc bare minimum, and more like 400cc. In my case, I briefly looked at a 50cc scooter, but decided it was daft not to spend another $600 and get a decent-sized one - and I'm glad I did.
Once you've got everything sorted out, let us know :-)

Okay, 5 posts and you're already taking the piss. It had completely escaped our collective attention that we pay more to register our over 61cc motorcycles than people in cars. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ooooh OOoh I know! He should get a VOLTY! :Punk:
It would be perfect for his needs - cheap to run and maintain (as long as you keep the chain lubed) can keep up good speeds on the motorway, and is unlikely to attract attention from those coppers who have nothing better to do with their time than pull over innocent bikers.

I'm a bit different there, I'm doing a physics major. Yes, relativity, quantum mechanics, that sort of stuff.
:Offtopic: You might find this interesting...
"If time doesn't become 'fuzzy' beneath a Planck interval, this discovery will present problems to several astrophysical and cosmological models, including the Big Bang model of the universe," Lieu says.
Other theorists say the new results must be taken into account, but they say not enough is known about the way light does or should behave below the Planck interval to draw firm conclusions yet.
One challenge for theorists, if the studies by Lieu and Ragazzoni are on track, is that the instant of the Big Bang would involve an infinitely hot and dense condition -- something current theory does not allow.

LOL nicely put. Hey, wasn't meaning to take the piss! It was something that quite a few people might see, so thought it was worth correcting - but decided to be sure of my facts before posting. References given for benefit of those without motorbikes, who want to know where I got my figures from.

Save me the "I'm a poor student" BS...every dollar I earn counts as well, you know.
Point taken. I'm glad I've left the penniless student days long behind, and nailed the resulting $28k student some years ago. It isn't quite so precarious, but you still need to work hard and budget carefully; it's weird how expenditure seems to grow to match income. I'm just glad I'm able to pay the mortgage and fully support a wife and child.

CHeers to the people hwo are being reasonable. I said I KNOW I was taking a risk, I got caught. Was wanting a cheap bigger bike, they can just tag those fines on the end too.
I haven't read all the pages of this thread, but already the message must be pretty clear to you by now - SAVE the money, PAY the costs to get your bike roadworthy and certified, PAY your fines. The fact that you say "they can just tag those fines on the end too" suggest that you're heading very quickly to being eternally in the red (and not too worried about it by the sound....)
Overall, your attitude suggests that you might be better suited to another form of transport rather than a bike.

Yes. He is indeed the first person I've ever heard of who have dared to complain about a - to some degree self-inflicted - misfortune due to lack of intense scrutiny of the law.
Personally I can't seem to recall anyone within my circle of acquaintances who have ever - even to the slightest - flaunted the law of the land. No matter be it the speed limit, keep left rule, 2 second rule, max 250 ccm for learners and restricted, indicate for 3 seconds before turning/shifting lanes, etc...

Anyway hi5 for moving towards riding legally and, and from another student with a bike (surviving off less than the full student allowance and no job), cry less please.

Considering you are studying engineering I think you might wanna pull your head out of your arse and re-consider those statements.
Choosing a field of study does not necessarily equate to choosing the direction of your career... In this day and age employers are becoming more and more intent upon employing good people with a wide range of skills who can work together as professionals - cocks who put other people down just for the sheer hell of it generally doesn't fit in very well in. So good luck with growing up before you have to start looking for a job - engineering or not.

License simple way to get it,go to WINZ,as a student they may pay for it if you ask politely, take a few reasons to them why you need a full,i.e long way to work so need larger bike, can't work if bike is broke hence bigger bike upgrade, need license to work and get larger bike.Heaps of uni students and other benefit lovers do this.
And riding un wof means no insurance, assuming you have 3rd party, not good if ya hit a ferrari,or cause a 40tonne truck to crash.
Fines suck, Ive paid over 10 grand in fines in nz, cleared em all before I left NZ, Its a bi product of auckland, too many cops on the road, in the year ive been in sydney and riding i can count on my fingers how many times ive seen cop cars patrolling here... never been pulled up and i ride like i stole it..
I never wore an L Plate for 5 years, had that fine Once or twice...
The one time I did wear it to go sit my restricted I got pulled over to check it was a 250, let me on my way, go figure - looks fucking gay tho

That's why the L plate is for LEARNER,also loser in some cases.Still at least the fines were paid, not like some who get them remitted for $100 hour community work or 3 months jail for $28000,out in 5 weeks probably.
