So I am looking at getting a Xbox sometime soon.

I have had a PS1 and PS2 but played a lot of xbox while away in Canada. So i got hooked on it.

Any1 give me any hints on what to get? Like is it worth getting a large GB one to a smaller one?

Thanks

Quick answer - get a PS3. Xbox is a piece of shit. Mine is faulty, my mates had to be fixed, and my brothers is stuffed. All just happen to be out of warranty.

Go for the pro system (not the elite) my flat mate says, has all the perks etc.

if you're a casual gamer, the xbox 360 is the best. the ps3 is for hardcore gamers really.

Then again he owns all 3 of this generation of consoles lol

Having owned both I have setteled on the PS3
dont be tempted by the xbox's low price - they are poorly designed and were rushed to market ahead of quality control . RROD / E74 / disc scratching etc. Plus you have to pay to play online....inbetween sending it away to be fixed.

It says * This product is not backward-compatible with PlayStation 2 titles.

Does that mean it wont play ps2 games?

Yea, just be prepared to buy new heat sinks and game disks like someone else mentioned every year or so. I like that you can just buy the ps3 and get better everything gaming wise, and reliability, too. Seriously so many people seem to run out of warranty just as they break.

My console ownership goes back to the Atari 2600, Have owned at least one from every generation since then (3rd generation my arse, Maybe if your 10 years old) anyway, The Xbox 360 is a stunning bit of kit, killer price, Poor track record but they are pretty reliable nowadays, If mine died tommorow I wouldn't give a rats arse its more then given us enough hours to warrent its price.

I'd buy another one immediatly.

Extended warrenties are a rort, Your covered by the consumers act, They are charging you for something that you already have.

AVOID PS3

Overpriced piece of shit IMHO. Plus if you want to play guitar hero you have to plug the things in with USB cords...wireless my ass

Wouldn't recommend the core console, you'd run out of space way too quick. Try find a package deal...one that comes with a couple of games and the hard drive.

If you buy a new 360 it should have an updated motherboard which means it wont break as easily as some people seem to think. The PS3 is way over priced and you really have to be into their exclusive titles to want to buy it (GT5, metal gear solid ect..)

I have a 360, ps3, wii, xbox and ps2 and the 360 gets played the most by far with absolutely no problems ( and im sure its an old version not the updated motherboard).

Don't worry about that. They have 3 year warranties if you get the E74 or red ring of death.

So long as you don't get an arcade version you will get the latest revision (codenamed Jasper) and that has supposedly solved most of the problems. They have only been out for 3 or 4 months but so far I haven't heard of any rrod on them, they are also a lot quieter than the previous versions.

IMO the PS3 is overpriced and if you aren't a hardcore gamer just looking to waste a bit of time a few nights a week then the 360 is the way to go. Its also pretty good as a media player too.

So your basically saying stay away from the xbox?
The early X-BOXs were a bit 'too early' and had overheating problems which caused them to intermittantly shut down.

The new version X-BOX is heaps better for game choice.

If you buy a PS4, you get a Blue Ray Disc player for free!

Would advise you to avoid them both and get a Nintendo Wii. The Wii is nothing like as advanced however you get very good game playability and you will not suffer total brainwash psychosis, lose your job, get thrown out of your house, loose your girlfriend, and just live to play (until the power gets cut).

Good luck.

Ive got the xbox360 had it since it came out, no Red ring of death so far and its great fun for all. Been looking online lately and it has a nice simple firmware mod that can be done to allow you to play backups of game discs. I worked it out at $50 for someone to do the firmware upgrade, $80 for 20 blank discs and then a mate can do the copies for me or you can purchase a modded dual layer dvd-burner off trademe allready to go($80.00) so a good option if you do go the 360 route.

A kickass PC would be good too and i would likely get that over a console but with my kids these days the simplicity of the consoles suits them better.

Disclaimer: I in know way advocate piracy of any software.

I've had a xbox360 for 18 months. Couple of weeks ago the video crapped itself (everything audio etc still works) so I'm currently having a fight with MS to get it repaired under the acceptable quality provision of the consumer guarantees act. So far they have refused because its out of their 12 month warranty (which doesn't mean shit as far as the CGA is concerned) but I'm not giving up.

Other than that I've been very happy with it, and was also using it as a media center, streaming movies, music etc over my wireless network from the pc.

Xbox is fine, ps3 if you can afford it is just that little bit better. Plus the blue ray player kind of seals the deal (and free online play)

Agree, the xbox while fine, it's graffics are'nt quite on par with the PS3, Actually there was something on T.V a little whiole back saying how sony are losing money on the ps3 due to how much it cost to develop it, and hence the still high price tag, with the free online gaming, better graphics and blue ray player, its a sure win.

My issue with PS3, it's a pain in the ass with the way you have to load up a game through the menu, and it is un-doubtedly slower to load games, BUT with the other before mentioned traits i'd prefer one hands-down over my xbox.

I'm a +1 for the 360. I think Romeo and my brother would be too. My brother has had one for 3 years that didn't die, then moved here to NZ (from England) and his has just crapped out after a year (RROD). He's bought an arcade one to replace it, and just swapped his harddrive onto it. MS are replacing his broken one for him

PS3 is over priced, and personally I think it's a bit of a 'oooh, look at meeeee, I have a PS3333333' load of w**k. Just like Mac's and iPod's.

Thats my 2 cents

Hey DM, I had this exact problem with my kids 360. I sent it in under the RROD warranty problem and just stated that "sometimes" is red rings, other times I get no video and 1/20 times it actually works.

Just to let all the 360 haters know, yes the 360 has the dreaded Red Rings of Death but that can be easily remedied by being abit smarter about placement and cooling. My Xbox has experianced it but I got it replaced.

PS3 on the other hand, has just as many issues with shitting itself then the 360 does.

Funnily enough, it's not due to over heating, but the PS3 is currently too smart for it's own good and tends to absolutely shit itself when it experiances games it doesn't like. (Assassin's Creed would be a smart idea to avoid, destroyed many a PS3).

In the long run the PS3 is the better choice, but for fun here and now, get the 360.

The 360 has gotten better how ever you can not forget what the ps3 has to offer for the money... Built in wifi, bluetooth, blu ray, HDD (arcade 360 does not offer this) and free online play. The main thing that swade me was the 33% failure rate of xbox 360's terrible by any standards. I wouldnt worry to much about graphics how ever i have not seen to many 360 games come close to MGS4 and killzone 2. PS3 is also the more silent of the two. The 360 is amazing value but you get what you pay for.

I just went through the Xbox 360 vs PS3 thing and got the PS3.

PS3 Pros:

Better games for what I like - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue with a Logitech wheel is fuckin awesome. You have never seen graphics that good for a car game. KillZone 2 is wicked and PS3 only. It's graphics also waste anything Xbox has.

User-upgradable hard drive - I hate the idea of paying MS shitloads to get a bigger drive for the Xbox. PS3 you just buy a standard 2.5" SATA drive and stick it in. Handy if you install lots of games and media.

Built in Wi-Fi and Wireless controller - Don't come with the Xbox so have to pay more to get those. $188 for Wi-Fi and $40 for the recharger and battery. Or get the Xbox 360 Elite to get Wi-Fi but still need the charger kit.

BluRay player - If you've got an HD TV it's worth the extra $1 over DVD when you rent a movie.

Better media playing - PS3 can play most media you download. Either natively or streamed from your PC with PS3 Media Player. Xbox can do it too but I prefer the PS3 interface.

Free online gaming - I'm not a hardcore online gamer so can't stand the idea of paying $80/year to play online when I feel like it.

Mates with games - A couple of other mates went down the PS3 road as well so we can share games. Might be a con for you if your mates went Xbox 360 or you have no mates.

Honestly the only thing that icould be considered a con is the back catalogue of games. Xbox 360 has more old games but remember that 90% of them are shit. All the good titles coming out now are on both and the PS3 exclusives are generally better than the Xbox ones.

If you look into it you'll find that an Xbox with the PS3 spec works out more expensive than the PS3!

80GB PS3 with KillZone2 (wicked game) and free online play for ever at DSE = $735

Xbox 360 Elite = $569
Controller charger = $40
Decent first game = $90 or more
First year of Xbox Live = $80
Total for Xbox360 = $779+

I never liked rFactor that much. Its annoying when you can drive halfway up someones ass before it recognises a collision.
And I much preferred LFS as i could just load the game up and join any race online in a matter of seconds.

Headbanger
25th April 2009, 12:53
There is no doubt rFactor is deeply flawed, yet in other areas (as a platform for user content) it performed stunningly. It was this strength that imo became its greatest weakness and forced people to join leagues if they wanted to race online.

I never had any issue with online play after getting into an event but did find that offline play was ruined after they fudged with the AI and then simply gave up.

Still, as far has having a game with hundreds of tracks and cars it can't be beaten, and after playing a game with driving physics like rfactor I fail to see how anyone can enjoy the utter shithouse driving models used in rubbish like the Grid, Supercars/racedrive or Gran Turismo.

GT5 Prologue is a massive step up in realism for the Gran Turismo series. It shits all over Grid/Supercars/Forza etc.

They've basically designed it so if you're using the dualshock controller you can't play beyond the basic races. You need a decent wheel to get anywhere now because the driving model expects you to drive it like a car not like an arcade game.

Can't wait for the full to come out. Supposedly later this year.

No such thing as a motorbike sim until they figure out a way to model counter-steering, the clutch, and the mighty mighty wave.

Obviously it doesn't work with a wheel and is never going to be a sim but it looks like fun :)

Haven't got it yet but I probably will.

Or.... Rumor has it that either GT5 will have bikes in it or they will release Tourist Trophy 2 soon after.

I have got motogp 08 on ps3. It is a great way to waste a lazy wet day. Just when you think you are good. Put the realism handicaps off and watch the field ride away into the sunset.

:bye: :spanking: :scooter:

How about tourist trophy for PS2, made by the lads who make GT.

Pretty sweet game.

To me, Tourist Trophy was a complet failure.

As a big motorcycle fan, I was just so disappointed. Just tell me your post adress and I'll post it to you FREE. Just take it away! Get it out of my house!

No I mean seriously! It's just far too different to GT4. On GT4, you control the whole vehicle! It's awesome!

But on TT, it's... oh hold on, Is TT an Arcade style game? Then it's beliveable...

GP500 is fricking hard game - love how you cna actually get the rider to lean off the bike as well as control the tipping in of the bike. Two different inputs to do this rather than the usual, oh im turning left so the rider hangs off the left.

Very hard to get to grips with makign your rider hang off and then controlling how much turn to have without breaking traction, anda great deal of usermade mods out there for skins etc. Managed to get a copy of full game but was very hard to track one down.

HA! Microsoft caved in today and are fixing it for free, sometimes the law rocks.:woohoo:

Other than that I've been very happy with it, and was also using it as a media center, streaming movies, music etc over my wireless network from the pc.

Don'T know why you had any issues at all.

My sons is 2 years old and got the red ring of death over the weekend (its one of the older ones).

Went to the xbox NZ support website (http://www.xbox.com/en-NZ/support/) entered my info (like the serial number) etc.

email arrives within 2 mins with details of where to send it and a label to attach to send it back (complete with free post info).

get another email telling me that we get a months xbox live gold as a thank you and an apology.

tracking info comes in a third email.

As easy as you can get. No need to argue. No consumer guarantees act - nothing. Just send the console back for repair.

Awesome service !!!!!

FWIW - I have tried both the xbox 360 and PS3 in hi-def and buggered if I can see any difference in the quality of the games.

Yeah - the PS3 comes with blu-ray, but then I have a dedicated player so that was of no use to me - and it really didnt justify the difference in cost.

Xbox 360 vs PS3 - xBox360 all the way for me - more games, cheaper games etc.

But - if I was an occasional gamer - I'd get a PS2. Almost free - more games than you would ever want. And as it is still the largest selling console in the world - there are still plenty of games been made for it.

I had to argue because my xbox did not RROD, and therefore is not covered under the extended 3 year warranty for that issue. So MS argued that my ordinary 1 year warranty had expired and I had to pay $163-$199 to get it repaired. The CGA says a consumer electronic good should last about 3 - 5 years to be of acceptable quality. Because mine was only 18 months old, it did not meet this standard and MS are required to either repair or replace free of charge.

They are now doing this.

Glad to hear you got a solution. Sounds like they are helping you out a lot.

The thing with the CGA is that unless you purchased it directly from Microsoft - they have no responsibility to do anything - Its the Retailer who has to replace the unit and then they have to deal with the supplier. Legally the people who sold it are allowed to make you chase the manufacturer.

Regardless - glad to hear that you have it sorted and will be back playing shortly.

That's basically what happened. Went back to Dick Smith with it, and they said deal direct with MS as they are the only people authorised to repair ir. I don't know whether they were just fobbing me off or not, as yeah I understood CGA dealt with retailer, but either way, it getting repaired so I'm a happy camper. :woohoo:
