Assistance choosing jacket + boots

Hi there,

I'm just another shy newbie attempting to wade my way through the world of motorcycle accesseries! I thought cycling was over the top, but motorcycling has more stores and gear than you can shake a stick at!

I've narrowed it down to two jackets that fit well, and fit my budget.

I'm also pretty happy with the alpine stars boots i tried on. Although i'm not sure i want to spend the extra to get them as waterproof. Anyone used AXO boots, or have another recommendation?

Has anyone had any experience with these products?

Synthetic riding gear is great for warmth and water proofing but they are a one hit product, in other words if ya go for a slide ya will usually find they are fucked after it !
Whereas leather will usually hold up (maybe a bit of stitching)
If you aint gonna change in sizes over the years a leather will still be there in ten or twenty !
Extra coin at the beginning and you will need wet weather gear to wear over it !

Depends if ya wanna walk with a limp in 30 years time when ya knees, shoulders, elbows etc give out cause of all the knocks they took !
I have plenty of morphine if ya need it !
But hey i was tough when i started riding, didn't need any of that pussy armourd riding gear ! (not that there was any around back then)
But by christ i wish i had of now !

Simon, definitely go for the all over protection as much as possible. We all know it can be a bit costly to enter a new sport, and biking is definitely no exception.

But look at it this way: try running on gravel as fast as you can, then throw yourself on the ground and tell us how it feels...the average human can run say about 10 miles per hour, so imagine when you're on a machine that propels you at 20,50, etc

Anyway, enough of the lecture. Cycletreads' gear is good value and I've been getting stuff from them for a long time now and have never had an issue.
However, as i do a lot of touring around the North Island, i have been saving for leathers as I find that corduroy tends to "move" too much around my body, especially in Summer when I have to remove the liner.

Oh, and the "L" plate status only lasts so long :cool:

Nothing wrong with synthetic mate it will save ya and it is warm and dry !
All i'm saying is it may only last the one hit and if you slide any distance who knows !
My Mrs dropped (ok ok i dumped her) off the back of my triple at say 20 30 k and her corura jacket did its job ! Armour saved her shoulder but the jacket is now fucked as it wore through on a couple of places !
Expensive wheelie that one considering the helmet took one as well ! Sigh !

I am a firm believer in doing things right the first time. So it does make sense just to get the right gear from the start. Whats the damage on a reasonably price leather jacket?

Lots of people start off with fabric and lots als still wear fabric years into their riding, so there's no problem with that. Doesn't have a "bad rep" so to speak at all...

Just that leather's cooler (fashion-wise, not necessarily temperature), all the racers wear them, and if you do, you could even ride a woolly mammoth and all the women swoon over you!

I can highly recommend the Rjays jacket like this one. (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Helmets-clothing-footwear/Pants/auction-214242537.htm) Hubby's got one and it's awesome. He's had it for three years, I've handwashed it (using nik wax tech wash of course), and the outer fabric is still as waterproof as the day he got it.

They've very recently been restyled to the Evo II (http://www.rjays.com.au/home/products/textile-evo-2-jacket.html) (price of $449 is Aussie $)

Boots - I bought a pair of Alpinestars Web Goretex in February which are waterproof. Cost is about $399. Haven't had them long enough to comment on the longetivity of the waterproofness.
