View Full Version : Nikau Cave Cafe via Port Waikato (May 24)
Cary
24th April 2009, 13:04
Not been a (near)Auckland ride for a while and Port Waikato and area always good for a day trip.
Simple plan : leave Papakura Autobahn at 10 to Nikau Cave Cafe (http://www.nikaucave.co.nz/cafe.html) for lunch via Klondyke/Port Waikato Rd.
Then after a leisurley lunch/coffee/beer do a loop further south and back up through Wairamarama area.
Coulpe hours Alk-Cafe, hour or so for lunch then 2-3hr arvo ride home. For those keen will end up at Patumahoe Tavern for snack/coffee/beer.
How's that sound?

Place certainly looks like it needs a good fumigation. Very dirty and insect infested
Damp, too. Fumigate, drain, and concrete, that's what it needs.

Have been through the cave and it might be possible to get an old smoker through, but we would have to dismantle it and take it piece by piece in a few spots.

You've done a large chunk of this one before Tom and the rest of it was pretty well swept when I went through there recently.
On past performance, you will have no trouble at all.

Wot about next wednesday, the 6th?
Having actually looked at the map and realised how close it is (surely thats only 45mins from Tuakau via the gravel?) it looks like an easy morning or afternoon outing, I would prefer one end of the day rather than the middle.
Edit: looks like the 6th doesn't work, back to whatever plan A was then.

There is a reason on the saturday only.
Sunday there is a better reason to stop @ the village bar:niceone:
Will try to find a better one......later
Most will have done these roads before anyway.
May try the 'corner man' system, any volunteer for tail end charlie?
It will be that or if the bike behind you can't see you turn at an intersection stop and wait till they do.

There is gas at Tuakau and at port Waikato. Whats your range?

20th May 2009, 18:44
with just my tank, 120-130. Should be enough? I've got a 5L can that I bring along when thats in doubt..
BP to port waikato via klondyke 62.4km
And if i read Cary's route correctly it'd be 128kms from the Port to Tuakau via the cafe and added loop.
Less than 20km from Tuakau to The Village Bar and Grill in Patumahoe.
So 210-220 kms.
Does that sound about right Cary?
GPS tells me it's 66k from Tuakau(fuel) to Cafe & 120k from Cafe to Patti Tavern(17k less if you refuel at Tuakau again)
Soooo you'll need 170k range........
Bass is coming along so just bring a hose  Don't think he charges much for fuel transport:msn-wink:

Just so people know....... There is no fuel at the cafe tho. Port waikato would be best for those with small tanks (Less than 150km range) to fill up. Then only 120km's til next fill.

I prefer just watching the man/woman behind so will play it by ear.
If we use corner man yes, will see on day as at least up to Cafe there's not a lot of intersections. If we have probs we could try it post lunch.

OK, seeing as we "are" on topic let me warn you younger ones of the perils of our fascination with these two essential "life" items!
Bearing in mind that I am almost at the end of my natural life cycle, (three score years and ten) this is what it does to your mind!
The weather, circumstances and a bit of a sore leg, have kept me from riding my Tiger lately.
The other day I went out to the garage, turned on all the lights, drooled over, sat on, touched and talked to my bike for a while!
It felt sooooo good.
I was so turned on I considered checking her over and going for a short ride! (Omarama, around Lake Aviemore or down to Kurow etc)
Then I thought, "no" save the petrol for the weekend and go for a "long" ride!
So I locked the shed door and went off to do some chores ordered by her indoors.
Next day her indoors (the other half of this equasion) went and unlocked the garage and "wahlah", I get an ear full!
All the bloody garage lights have been on half of yesterday and all night last night!
It's the women, they rot your mind, you start to forget things, I should have gone for the "short" ride, it would have been lots cheaper!
The moral of this story is:
A good bike will always await your every command without asking for anything in return. (apart from the occasional oil petrol tyres etc, little things.)
But even a "good" woman will cause you deterioration of your mind and never miss a chance to tell you about it and how much it cost!
Be warned choose your woman wisely whereas just about any old bike will do and it will love you whatever, without asking for anything in return!
Has it stopped raining/snowing yet?

Cheers guys, nice pootle today. Thanks for waiting for me at the turnoffs :)
I don't think it's possible to have it actually fall off from shrinkage, but it must've been a close call on the way home. Straight motorways aren't much fun, but at least I can rest my left hand on the cylinder head to keep it warm.
It isn't a proper ride unless something falls off my bike. This time it was the left rear indicator -- wondered why the front one was blinking so fast -- when I got home I noticed the rear one dangling by just the wire. A little nut fell off. Either the single vibes from the motorway or those metal roads  3L4NS1R -- did you see when it fell off?

Port Waikato and Nikau Cafe before the rain..
Yeah, the ride home was a bit of a chore.I went down Richardson Rd with the others, but without a front guard my vision was obliterated - who woulda thought eh? They should have rules about such things. But it was no better on the seal,I just couldn't see through the visor and rode to SH22 practically blind.I've never used this helmet in the rain and it was real crap - but Clint rode from Rotorua in the rain with a KBC,so it can't really be a brand problem. But by SH22 it seemed to come right....maybe it was a temp balance thing, maybe the dirt road had put a something on....but it was sweet from the phone tower on.
It's the first time I've ridden the R65 in the rain,so was looking forward to it.Really impressed with the K70's in the wet,but I've always regarded them as the best wet road tyre ever,so confirmed.Hand, feet and bum wet and cold, but otherwise all good - I'm even wearing the same thermals as they didn't get too damp.
Pity we couldn't make more of a ride of it,but it was only going to be a short ride for me anyway.Great to see such a good turnout of riders and bikes.

Good to catch up with afew of you lot.:msn-wink:
The ride back to Hams with Clint was simple and un eventful, and seeing Cary Neil etc going back up 22 was a nice also.
Clint sculled a quick coffee at chez tri boys and headed for Roto vegas direction.

I nearly rode it today, but knew you would put me to shame on the roads, so it stayed at home
I had a looksie at your machine, not bad I suppose....It will certainly do the trick and gets along too...
I didn't have to work but had commitments at home. I really wanted to hang out, rain doesn't worry me in the big scheme of things....
Yeah i was just joking. The husaberg was tempting..... The ktm came with the supermoto kit too. :)
Not a bad day all up, irate young farmers looking for a target aside <_<
Good days ride for the 5 of us that stayed on, saved the best roads for after lunch.
Cheers for taking the pics Andy, nice one of me :2thumbsup

Rain wasn't bad and i'd wrapped up (+heated grips:whistle:) so didn't get cold at all. Thought the ride over all was good and the south loop turned out to be a good run.
Hope everyone enjoyed the riding they did get in.

:soon: All I know is, I came around a corner and got into second gear.
Then.... This guy comes at me in the middle of the metal road waving a stick. I stop and say hi, thinking he was friendly....
He abuses me and all the guys, saying this isn't a race track and such, then whacks my front tyre with the stick....HARD! Lucky it was a Michelin...
Lucky it was good rubber
I was brave, I rode off and said Fuck you....:spanking: under my helmet and into the wind....:Police:
Gathered around the bend and then 15 minutes later he fronts with the gang of two and the next 4-5 minutes is a little heated...:bleh:
That about sums it up......

I was behind NZKTM and saw the guy come into the road and wave us down, and I thought it must be a stock movement maybe. Then he stopped us and started yelling abuse at NZKTM,when he started hitting his bike with the stick I thought I might just move out while there was a distraction. Then he turns up with reinforcements at the end of the road, and has a go at us again.
It was a surreal flashback 35 years for me - a large group of bikes and some local going off his head at us.At least we are consistent.
And what is the explanation for the ditch plowing just before Limestone Downs?

I saw the dog first and thought he was just warning us of the dog on the road. I am mindful of stock and after all the riding I have done around the Waikato and King country have never had any issues with stock.....
Only young, arrogant, so called farmers from Port Waikato...
When I spoke to him at the intersection he was really quite reasonable, he even sort of apologised for hitting my tyre as he knew we weren't all racing around the roads. :2guns:
Having said that, I have no idea as to what even pre-cursed this event as we were quite spread out.....
Usually a wave is enough to say hello, but a whack across the front tyre is a bit too much for a first date...:bleh:
Anyway, it was fun and next time I will always remember the event on Klondyke Rd...
Shit, even the name spells trouble, dueling banjos and such....Remember Deliverance? :spanking:

Again, thank for sorting the ride Cary, lots of fun , but Warren realised his gear wasn't up to cope with the cold, so we bailed.
Peter was overtaking me around a gentle corner & went wide into a ditch. (No harm done)

After that down hill section and it was a left hander? Did he take it a little wide or a little fast...?
I thought it would be a hard one to get out of as it was deep and ran for a bit alongside the road...
He got out of it okay and nothing damaged by the look of it...so all was good...
There was quite a bit of new metal on the road and it sort of collected on all of the corners didn't it..?

I left the cafe and went south to SH35 along the coast. Weather did not improve any as I went south, but was not too bad, and wet gravel is better than wet seal anyday. Only the extremities got wet and cold.
Thanks to Cary for the organisation.
See you all again some time.
Shit I enjoyed that!!
Well wrapped up for the weather, some good tyres on The DR and the suspension well sorted out, I was surprised at how comfortable she was in the wet. Much preferred the gravel to the seal, but.
Excellent afternoon

Seeing as I missed out on this (been fuming all week about it) I took yesterday afternoon off for wee wander down that way. Very pleasant weather, no stroppy cockies, no entanglements with ditches, a good coffee at the cafe and a chat to the owners.
The roads are in great condition although there is a bit of variety in the surfaces, going from piles of gravel to hard pack at random but the stock was well behaved and apart from one nervous horse & rider (I stopped to let them past and for a short chat) there was nothing too exciting.
I came back up a part of highway 22 and practiced my Rossi manouvers.....apart from giggling my head off I suspect I looked a real n00b, trying to get your knee down on the 990 must be the ultimate in pointless exercises. You almost need to catch a bus to get from one side of the bloody bike to the other! Entertaining tho. :third:
Must get down there more often.
