What sort of filter is it? If it has a pleated paper element, you can cut it out and replace it with Unifilter foam, using the existing filter frame.
I've done this on a VF500, VFR750, VTR1000 and VFR800.
Here's a link to the VTR filter pictures (http://rides.webshots.com/album/88297322swwFNk).

K&N make filters to suit most motorcycles...

The internet and credit cards, make shopping for such easy. Or contact a motorcycle shop (in NZ .. or anywhere) via E. mail ... check price and arrange payment/delivery. with them.

Motomail sell the Unifilter foam, and probably other bike shops too. For the shims, I poked around in the workshop of a computer company I used to work at, and found some little washers that were the perfect size (from a printer or summat).

Shims in exact sizes that are perfect for carb needles, are made by Tamiya and can be found in model shops
