A point to ponder guys n gals.
Lurking in this forum .generaly not saying much are some very experienced motorcycle people.
Im not going to quote names or logins but in here we have
A motorcycle riding instructor of 25 years experience -Might just know what he's talking about when it comes to basic rider training.
An ex club president of Auckland motorcycle club--Probably more experience in organising race meetings than we could hope to have.
A grade motorcycle mechanic -from back in the days when bikes got fixed not just bolt new parts on.
A grade car mechanic -might know a thing or two about engines.
Aircraft engineer
Makes ya think don't it ? These guys haven't got knowledge cut n pasted from google search or some such.--theyre probably the guys that wrote the stuff you are googling.

Talking of lurking and sitting in corners, I hear there might be a bike cop or two on the forum, as well! Who'da thunk it!

the point is there are some pretty knowledgable people out there.People who might just be able to offer opinions based on experience not computer searches.

Everybody is knowledgable on different things, but people have to learn to admit when they are wrong when faced with the evidence and also tell people they are wrong and back it up with evidance.
Start quizzing me on leatherwork or medlabsci and you won't get me to shut up, but I don't know much about engines. An example from a long time ago: I couldn't see how "scavanging" worked and why we needed back pressure, the knowledgable types intervened and provided some evidance and sorted it out.
I'm glad we have these people on the forum who help us so much :-) You've all been a real help to us beginer-types. And if you identify yourself or come down this way, give me a shout and I'll buy you a beer.
:niceone:
On another matter, has anybody bored the exhast of a GN so it gets more top end? Is it worth it? Private message me please because I'm considering doing this and would like to ride a bit better at 100...

I kind of mucked around with exhausts on GN's -mainly to get something as effective but cheaper than stock.
I fitted a supertrap pipe on one and the thing just seemed to fly.
Mind you something I noticed was that the cam timing seems to be set from new for bottom end grunt -when the cam chain is about half worn for some reson the bike seems to breath better and get better top end
Made me a lil bit tempted to slot the cam sprocket and see what happens.
--ANYHOO--before mucking around with zorsts id suggest changing your gearing a bit -maybee two teeth bigger/smaller on the rear might give ya the effect you are after

That from some past experience with some people on this site is:
That you offer some pretty standard advice or instructions, just to be bluntly asked "WTF would you know about it?" Upon letting them know what and why I get told "your full of sh#t, f@ck off!". So I generally don't even bother now unless asked. Wonder if the others here have had the same?

I am a bar room know it all by nature I like to give advice and opinions on technical matters but its only backed up by general knowledge. I changed a clutch in a Mini once and I reckon that qualifiy's me to offer advice. We all know that 90% of the advice is bollocks but every now and then a gem of wisdom comes from the most unexpected places.
I lived in Japan for two years and sort of speak it and can read some of the silly warning lables on the fairing. so yep we all have hidden talents.
I say keep giving your advice and input mate only the dorks will give you grief so :whocares:
PS it would be useful to know who the guys and gals are with the quals then we can go direct to then for free advice how about a list please

That I know bugger all, but I've done more to a mini than what is described here...
Then there is the electrical quals I have hidden and the spare time restoring old Hondas that used to make me alot of money. :whocares: But these days I make enough to get the local Honda shop do the work for me and more time for riding...
If you ask me I know feck all, but reckon those who make the statements that they do know and are making it very well known, then check with a mechanic first before you do anything on advice...

Who's been posting google results? I don't think anything I've seen here so far looks like the poster cut and paste from a web page.
Any knowledgeable lurkers, seeing posts such as you describe, would have one of two reactions: say to themselves "fuck, what shit. Not worth my while responding to it" or: open fire with both barrels and consign the poster to the oblivion reserved for those who meddle in the ways of wizards (who may or may not be subtle).

Another point i would like to make, is sometimes the dumbest answer solves the most technical question/problem. I used to ask my dad computer questions, he didnt know anything about computers.....but his answers used to put me back on track.
And experience is everything, i rather talk to someone who has 20 years hard yard, then someone who has studied it for 4.

Close. I did 4 years doing an apprenticeship, and another 4 at Uni and I can tell you first hand they're about the same in terms of the amount learned. In the workshop I learned in my hands... something you can't do from a book.
For those of you that know it - that feeling of the thread being "just tight enough" when you're cranking up a bolt? Teach that from a book! Just one of many examples but a valid one I think.
But likewise there are some things best learned from books. Of course apply them to the worlds of racing, fixing or riding bikes and the experience part does tend to some ito play on most occasions.
I think people should never be scared to learn. Don;t throw your opinion out there as black and white truth - if someone comes back on something you said, you have the chance to either learn from it, or help them learn from you. If they don't want to - that's ok. Their choice and their loss.
As for the lurkers... welcome. I'm glad we're not all loudmouths

Frosty, don't forget that these very experienced types may also be very busy individuals with more pressing things to do than lounge about on a site helping some guy through the same problem he's helped 100 other guys through. Many of the queries on here are fairly general in nature and I've yet to see a query go unanswered for long.

option 2 is something I tried once upon a time on my pet subject/job of acoustics. Went down like a lead balloon despite it being worded nicely so when people want to bleat now about dBA's and their exhausts I might keep an eye on it but won't try to right the worlds wrongs as they're posted. Some people respond well to correction, others don't and it makes giving such assistance a little thankless.

Well i have a good story about someone trying to change the rear shocks(???? didnt know they had these must have been late model), in his mini.
Long story short
Remove petrol tank - put in shocks-put in petrol tank - smile at a well done job - fire - car 20ft from hose - attempt to put out fire with buckets of water - call fire dept. - let them blow all the windows out with a hose - no mini
