is it 'law' that you must have a headlight on on a bike even in daytime? I think I remember it was back in the 80s when I was a kid.... I see some bikes riding with, some without.... whats the law?

Australia had a law (ADR 19/01) introduced 1992 that required hard wired headlights. As NZ bikes tend to be the same spec as the Aussie ones we ended up with no light switch as well.

I think it was proposed with all the other reforms for the licensing system but thats sorta all dissolved away.

It's not the law, but it should be your law - always ride with your headlights on.

Don't run with High Beams on all the time though. That's stupidity, and dangerous.

Entirely depending on the individual headlights. I can look directly into my lights on full beam during the day, from any angle, and not be blinded.

Well that's right, we do make it our law.
It is hard to buy a bike without the headlamp being hard wired in. It would be nice to be able to turn it off for starting when the battery is a little low. Maybe they could put in a delay to make it come on after 10 seconds or so.
Just a thought.

I know at least one person that has had a problem with you following them, and your blinding HID's on full in their mirrors. How are they supposed to ask you to turn them off?

Another thing Steve, what happens when you want to flash your highbeams for whatever reason?

I know at least one person that has had a problem with you following them, and your blinding HID's on full in their mirrors. How are they supposed to ask you to turn them off?Actually, it wasn't the rider, it was the pillion. But since you ask, they point at the lights and use the hand in a palm downward motion. There were lots more options available to them at the time - not a word was said when we stopped.. they would rather ridicule me on a public forum, and publish other private information that we made it clear they should not. Hey what a great way to meet KBer's ! That was the first person over 30 years we have EVER invited into our house and wished we hadn't. Never again. What a shame to have an experience like that ruin it for others.
Another thing Steve, what happens when you want to flash your highbeams for whatever reason?Yeah bro thats a problem. I dip and then flash them, but yes its not optimum.
In the end it's my decision and my life, and I'll live it my way, like you do, and if people don't agree and don't like it, then that doesn't affect me.

Not sure what, or who you're talking about there. The rider i'm talking about was THE RIDER, not a pillion, and as far as i'm aware, they've never been to your house.
Either way, the rider in front shouldn't have to figure out a way to signal you to stop blinding them. If you had been courteous to other road users in the first instance the same way that they are to you (by not blinding you), it wouldn't be a problem.

Every. Single. Day.
so when your riding around a bend and an on coming traffic is also on the bend and gets blinded by your contempt for everyone else but yourself do you expect them to stop what they are doing come chase after you and tell you that you almost made them have an accident and would be a nice enough chap to turn off ur high beams in the future,
HELL NO BECAUSE THEY WILL ASK WHO ARE YOU AND WHEN YOU SAY DANGEROUS BASTARD THEY WILL SMACK YOU IN THE HEAD.

No seriously, it actually needs to be pointed out to get through his thick skull.
I still have doubts.
