Anyone have an idea of what kind of bike my grand dad used to ride. Didn't realise he rode until a couple of days ago. Thanks

Actually, on second thoughts, it's older than 50s and not British. Could be French...a Puch?

It has an early BSA B50 (350cc) kinda look to it. Rigid frame early '40's.

It's the pleasing constant curve of the header pipe. Seen that in French bikes...

Girders and rigid rear, older than 50s. Looks to be foot change (unless there's a hand change hidden on the left side), so 1930s (or a 1940 summit post war )

Timing cover looks an unusual shape. Exhaust pipe angle looks sidevalvish, but the cylinder head looks too tall for a SV. Watch this space. Someone will get it, we never fail

Little oil tank in front of the crankcase, and the case has a distinct Royal Enfield look to it, as does that iron head.

I would guess a mid-30s Enfield 250.

It's a Royal Enfield WD/CO. circa 1938-1946. War Department model, though lots were sold as army surplus for years after the war

heres another one, silencers been a bit perverted

Yep. The kick starter position, and the little round button of the neutral selector are distinctive Renfield, as is the oil chamber at the front (they were actually dry sump like most bikes of the period, but instead of a frame mounted oil tank, they had an oil chamber built into the crankcase).

Renfield for sure.

Sure looks close.
Where there engine size variations? Cos that pipe, and it's height above the CC/below the tank don't quite match.

Pretty sure it's not a WD/C (sidevalve), but an OHV 250. At a closer guess, a 1937 250S.

The number plate HLD712 (assuming it was English) was issued in the Greater London area, I think in 1939/40. That would square with either military issue used privately or private ownership (though I did think military registrations had their own letter coding).

Did they have a centre stand like the one in the OP?

I believe that both the WD and the S model did.

Mind you, belief and knowledge are two vastly different things.

And faith - have faith, my son.

Took long enough to pop ya head in young fella.

it takes a while for the NZ electricity to be converted in to Japanese ones that I can use to fuel my desktop....

Cant stay though as there are Enfield photos yet to be unearthed !
