Info on RG150 please!

Looking at a 98 RG150, have done a bit of research on the forum and most of the stuff i've read seems to be pretty good, however, there's not many recent posts about them, its all from a couple of years ago.. So....
Any owners of RG150's out there that have had their bike for a while??
Just curious as to the reliability of them and what sorta regular maintenance they need etc.
Any other information you have that I may find useful would be greatly appreciated too :)

I had one for a while..great little bike...was advised to changed piston and rings at 20,000kms which I did and to regularly check power valve...apart from that servicing was very basic, change oil at 10000kms etc....servicing was very easy..can do most of it yourself if even slightly mechanically minded.

yeah ive heard the thing about the tape on the radiator, as they were manufactured for the hot humid malasian market or something correct?? Thanks for the info guys

Good bikes that are fun to ride (as long as you're under 100 Kg I suspect)
Nothing under 6k rpm but a nice amount of power at 8k plus (red lines at 12.5k from memory).

Always let your RG warm up for a minute or two before taking it out and always use Castrol TTX 4T oil in it.

Most of what is important has been covered on here, that may be why there isn't as much recently.
A good battery is important too.
Great bike, I've got a couple and love 'em.
Also you can race it in the streetstock class if you decide you want to, only need to take the plates and indicators of and its a competitive race bike :woohoo:

Good advice on warming up, but 2T is probably better for a 2-stroke ;)

That is a KR which is slightly different from an RG. I have owned both and from memory what you're talking about is the window that shows what level your oil (that mixes with the petrol) is at, so you know when it needs topping up. I am pretty sure my RG does'nt have one. The only other oil you should worry about on your KR is the gear box oil. :yes:

You put normal engine oil in the engine part and special two stroke oil in the reservoir under the pillion seat.

If you are not a complete uncoordinated beginner, I believe the RG will server you well. You might get tiered of changing gears often, but that can be fun keeping it in power.

As far as rider weight - I 80kg's and she has zero problems. Once I got my full I have even taken the misses on the back on the open road. Although performance is not spectacular with someone on the back, it can certainly keep up with traffic.

Handling is superb - you can throw it at corners with absolute abandon. The suspension is on the soft side which is more noticeable with higher speed cornering.

I've had mine for a year and a half - had a clutch bill of over $400 and a major service / tune up / brake pads just before that which was also around $400. Other than that, I went through speedo cables like crazy - $80 a pop! - untill I lowered the front forks to accommodate the wifes hight - had zero issue with it since.

Regarding the thermostat thing, I live north of the big smoke and although it doesn't get that cold, when it is around 0 deg - full choke - three kicks - and she is started. Only needs about 1min before the revs settle and a couple of corners of low rpm - then you are ready to move to the 8k rpm zone.

Riding around town she smoke most cages and fits through traffic nicely. On the open road one up, there is enough power to just over the speed limit without too much fuss. Probably could stretch it out to about 140 150km/h, but she wouldn't be happy for long. Cruising around 100 110 (indicated) causes the engine to turn over at around 7k-8k. That is high, but its a two smoker and is happy to rev.

Don't know what more to say, I love my RG. Have handed it down to the wife as I have upgraded to Thumper :bash: My wife doesn't like it as she is on the short side and has not riding experience - so we are going to be shopping for something more suitable for her, like a GPX250 or something like that. So, my RG might be on the market in the next few weeks (months?) - but right now, can't make any promises.
