Auckland - oil / diesel everywhere?

Hey everyone.

Question for my fellow Aucklanders. I was riding to work this morning along the waterfront, it was raining, and suddenly I noticed I was riding along in an ever increasing amount of oil/diesel patches. You know that 'bloom' type of pattern they make when they separate from water.

Has that always been on the waterfront? It almost looked like someone had been driving along leaking stuff from a truck.:gob: Ok I exaggerate, but you get my meaning...there was lots.

This is the stuff to avoid like the plague right? The kind of stuff that if it's on a corner you slow right up?

do you mean tamaki drive? and where abouts along it? like close to mission bay or city? i know theres sometimes some slippery stuff on the road. my back wheel skidded out on a patch then hit some white paint which didnt help :bash:

could be time for a thread discussing the correct tactics when suddenly coming across:

oil, gravel, dust, diesel, water, wet tar, mud/sewage

I'm just wondering which one you're meant to speed up on ...

Yes, you would want to avoid it.

Roads are most slippery after some light rain. There has been enough rain to lift all the crud off the road, now it is sitting on top of the water. Most common where vehicles sit running for a period of time, ie, busy intersections.

Once there has been a heavy downpour, ideally, it washes the road clean again.

Yeh along Tamaki drive just over the bridge/Ngapipi t/off heading to town. Where it splits into 2 lanes each way, the innermost lane had a steady trail of it...so I switched lanes.

Just wondering if maybe it's because it's the preferred lane by traffic.

I had a recent low speed bin on that kind of stuff. Both wheels slid sideways and the bike went down. It would have been nice to have had the opportinity to try and control a back wheel slide :)

i just panicked ay, didnt even realise what was doing (wish i did so i would know how to control the slide) but some guys pulled up along side as we were going towards mission bay and were like "mean slide bro!"



all i thought was "fuck mate i nearly lost mah bike" but i just did the thumbs up and let them go off ahead haha

yeah, the stuffs all over the place. No worries, youll get used to used to it. Its when you see a massive diesel spill that you should worry, but then most people dont see those one....they just feel em when they go ground ssky ground sky ground sky.

Like Dushy mentioned, it's everywhere mate, especially when it rains. Just watch out and you'll be fine, easy on the throttle when you're on known diesel and engine oil spots.
