View Full Version : Gear indicator?

Does anyone have a 'Gear' Display on their bike to let them know what gear they are in?
Are they standard on newer bikes? Has anyone added one?

I had one on my FXR but now i dont. I find i dont really care about the loss. They arnt really standard on newer bikes as some do some dont. I think you can add them but i dont understand why you would go to the effort. Why not just look at the revs and speed and figure it out?

dude seriously..
24 out of 76 of you're posts are new threads. In some other forums you'd get a spam infraction lol
lots of questions i know, but there is a search function. Also you could try a making one thread and asking multiple questions. Just post again in the thread when you think something else up?
"Breed777's mass questions" ;)
Anyway, Never had a gear indicator. No need for one, i can count (as stated above) and i can tell what gear im in by the revs and speed. woo

The GN 250 has them....I guess "A simple bike for a simple person"
OH, I used to own a GN so I guess I was a simple person too, or is that a simpleton?

i used to own a ginny [actually 2] and the second bike didnt even have a dash light, so the indicator didnt even help, LOL. hell, for a while, the second bike didnt even have a speedo, lol. tricky knowing how fast you are going by basing it on vibrations.
current bike doesnt have one, and doesnt even have a rev counter. i get along just fine without them as its two less things to take my attention away from the road.

why bother....if you need to change up,press the gearlevr up.....if you are already in top,no gear cgange will take place,if you need to change down press lever down,if you are in first no change will take place.....whats the problem with that, you dont need to know which gear you are in.

But having a gear indicator will save you from looking for 7th gear all the time.
And you can be in the correct gear before you begin an overtaking manoeuvre.
It's funny that the people who say they are not handy to have are the people who don't have one.

Nah. It's just one more thing to take your eyes off the road for. If you feel the need to change gear you're going to do it regardless of a number that appears on your instrument panel. If I did have to have something I guess a little light to indicate when I'm in top gear might end my ceaseless quest to find where the Honda engineers hid 7th gear on my bike.

yes i have one that i installed myself, its bloody easy. i use it a lot. i got mine from These guys (http://www.gingerparts.com/) they are really good guys to deal with.
you could also try www.powersport.co.nz bit closer to home and also really good to deal with.

I have owned bikes with and without them. I found it handy when fitted, and didn't miss it when it wasn't. My present bike doesn't have a gear indicator other than an OD (Overdrive) indication when in top gear, so best of both worlds.

yeh a top gear indicator would be handy at times, cud just mark on the rev counter and speedo or something to work it out. Or just shift up/down, only take half a sec max

yip, i fitted one. Got pissed off looking for 6th gear when i was allready there.
Also has a TRE built in, this made huge improvements to my engine. Stopped the low rev stalling, stopped the popping on downshifts and the engine runs smoother at lower revs

I had one on the GN.
I kind of miss it these days. Not in day to day commuting but when I'm at the track or on the open road.
I've tried to hook 7th several times at the track - or worse thought I was a gear higher than I was and ended up dropping down to 1st or 2nd when I wanted 2nd or 3rd instead.
Locked up the back end a couple of times going into slow corners.
Have also pulled out to overtake thinking I'm a gear lower than I was and had to stomp down the box to get past safely.
These things are more the exception than the rule - maybe a gear indicator wouldn't help anyway as I should be looking where I'm going - not at the cockpit.

You need to be told what gear you're in to then be able to overtake? :gob:
Why?

I can count up to 6 then back down to 1, and my memory lasts longer than 30 seconds, it just takes a bit of practice but you CAN do it.

Why?
A car or line of cars ahead... you judge how much room and time you have... you estimate what gear will do the job. A top gear roll on will take longer than a hard charge in 4th say.
So you decide 5th gear will be needed... the difference between 5th and 6th at 100kph is 200rpm (100kph is 4000rpm in 6th or 4200 in 5th on my SV) You actually need to hold a constant speed and look closely for a short while to work out what gear you are in that way.
It is much simpler and quicker to take a glance at a gear indicator to be absolutely sure what gear you are in.
The moment you get your gap for overtaking... you are gone. No pulling out and finding you haven't got enough acceleration and then changing down another gear.

Or you can free your concentration from that task and use it on other things.

I'm tired of looking down at the speedo and tacho and doing the bloody maths. Yep, always looking for 7th gear on the open road, and hoping like hell I don't pull first gear in town by chopping down one too many in the wet.
At the very least I'd like to know if I'm in 2nd, or NOT in top gear.
Seems to me all these things are is a PIC with a connection to the tacho and the speedo.
The moment you get your gap for overtaking... you are gone. No pulling out and finding you haven't got enough acceleration and then changing down another gear.Eh? Just ride up the white line. No hurry. ;)
I usually just work with the tacho when passing.. Quick check - GT650R 5,500rpm min, FZR400RR 9,000rpm min.

A lot of the aftermarket ones are.
The one i got for my SV was one that plugged straight into the bike's gear position sensor and gave me a readout then sent back to the CPU that it was in 6th so the bike didn't retard the ignition in the lower gears.

I recently repaired my top gear light. Had not worked since I got the bike. Bulb needed replacing :D haha quite handy not trying to hit that elusive next top-top gear. A real pain at night time though as it's a bright light on the dash shining right in my face.

I don't need a gear indicator... my bike can exceed the open road speed limit in 1st. And in top... can go most places in the south island , without the need to change down...

You should be able to tell if you have enough acceleration through the feel of the engine through the throttle, not having to rely on numbers on the tacho, and even less on the number of the gear.

Of course not. In my opinion there is no need to install one on a bike lacking it though as it's better to be able to feel your bike than to rely on visual cues.

You should be able to... but lack of experience on that bike, or lack of experience... period... makes it difficult.
But in the heat of the moment... many look for a gear that isn't there......

But many people feel it by beginning their overtaking move then changing down... losing valuable time.
Planning ahead and knowing exactly what gear you're in before you begin your move is another advantage.

Mind you, if the passing mano.. manu.. maneo.. um, is that closely timed well maybe wait 3 seconds for the next gap.

Do they? Well that's stupid.
But does knowing what gear you're in before overtaking really help? I would've thought that the revs would be more important.

As above... To check if you're ready to pass is it best to know the gear number "Oh I'm in 3rd, sweet to pass", or the revs "Oh I'm in the power zone, SWEEEEET to pass!"?

I'm pretty surprised anyone has to or feels the need to look at their dash and read their instruments before deciding on twisting the throttle.
Personally I get plenty of feed back through the bike/engine so know whats going to happen as I roll on the gas. If I had a gear indicator I can't imagine I'd use it. I don't care what number the gear is......
Just like a rev counter, what the hell are they for?, I can feel when the bike has stopped pulling, and I can fell when I hit the rev limiter, Ain't going to be looking down at the pretty needle......

Quite often I couldn't even read my gear indicator on the ginny, even the neutral light was hard to see sometimes. Best lesson to learn is listen and feel. Then again I've also gone looking for 7th every now and again on the bandit, and realised I'm in a higher gear than the one I actually wanted to be in. Still learning!!
Hey, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth bikes didn't even have neutral lights did they? :dodge:

If you're doing it right should know what gear you need for each corner (and what gear you're in tapped out at the end of the straight) so it's should be almost impossible to be in the wrong gear.

I'd agree but my bike pulls all the way to the rev limiter. A shift light would be more useful than the tacho for me.
