Yamaha YZF250 2001

What is the word on the street about these?

I am thinking of side/up grading to it from my 2002 CR125 Honda.

NO WAY. I have ridden one. They are heavy as hell, and the motor has no whack in it... its like an un-reliable XR motor in a Half-Ass heavy motorcross frame. Stick with the CR man, or find a newer yzf or other 250 4t

That bad huh? Reviews I read seemed much more positive than that!

thats probably because it was the first 4 stroke 250 etc... back then i owned a 2004 crf250r, the yzf was very very heavy, and it was fresh as it had blown up. The motor took forever to wind up. Of course, that might suit you, Its just my opinion, so you should prob go test the bike rather than listening to my rants, but I def. wouldnt suggest it as a MX bike. The funny thing is, my mate rode the same bike on a different occasion when I wasnt there, and be both said to the owner the motor was like an XR.

Cheers for the feedback. It is interesting to know. I find my cr125 takes a bit to wind up so perhaps it wouldn't be much better. I just find that my 125 is pretty hard work and thought something with a bit more torque could give me more confidence on jumps and corners as I am starting out.

I find that the CR kicks in hard and threatens to leave me behind every now and then...whilst extremely fun, its not the best on the nerves. To be honest, I am most concerned that it won't handle as well as my cr. I am just getting used to her.

it def. wont handle as well as the cr. the 3rd gen framed (02-07)crs are great handling bikes, and being a 2 stroke ali frame with half the capacity it is much lighter and easy to throw around. With the wind up on a 125 the key is to thrash the clutch. A 125 is a great bike to start on, you will become a much better rider than one plodding along on a 250f. Check your muffler for a re-pack, that can make the bike much more crisp and it something that most people ignore

the kicking is a typical 125 powerband. I found with my old rm125 that the more you ride it, the more you forget about it, until it just becomes the norm.

Or you could maybe look at fitting a flywheel weight.. i think you can fit them to 125's we have a yz250 with one and it truely is a joy to ride just takes a bit of the sting out of the powerband,The beauty of a fww is once you are use to the power you can just take it off
or you could look at something like a yz426 or 450 but again the early ones are heavy ..but they are really grunty and much more torqey than a 2 stroke

I cant coment on the YZF but it took me awhile to get used to my 125 but i kinda like it now im thinking of moving up to a 2504t this year but am having trouble with the thought of parting with the old 125 id dearly love to keep both

Thrash the clutch it wont break(I hope) and use your gears LOTS im sure i must change gears twice as much as guys im chasing on 4ts

probably 10 oz would be better ...we have a 15oz custom made fww on the 250

Well, just got back from the sandpit. She went like a dream. Started first kick, and hot started easily also. Easily fast enough for me. Nice even power. Handled well too. Perhaps not quite as well as my CR but close enough for the even power tradeoff. I am stoked, and the CR is definitely for sale.
