So what is the purpose of mentors? are they purely for information and guidance purposes on the forum? or do they do any practical work? Im just curious...

As a mentor I've had two people contact me, one was for help fixing up some basic mechanical problems with his bike - was more about getting the parts from the right place and showing him what the problem was and how to rectify it than riding, he just wanted a hand so he didn't get shafted by a bike shop to fix a simple problem.

The other was a middle aged guy who wanted some help building confidence with cornering, spent about one and half hours trying building on different ideas about how to go about it safely.

Unlike Dangerous suggests, I'd be the first to admit that I don't know everything, but as a mentor I'm not the be all and end all, just someone to point you in the right direction if I can't help you myself. The Me is just there so that people know who the designated mentors are.

You really are funny. I don't believe that you have read or understood anything but I am not surprised. Good luck ... and rubber side down.

Well I don't consider myself either Darryl.

A. I have enough friends already.

B. I don't think I suffer from low self esteem but I don't believe that my shit don't stink either !

I have only assisted one KBer so far - had a few enquiries but.

Someone feeling a bit left out are they?

Still, a ray of hope - you're more popular than DB.

Still, a ray of hope - you're more popular than DB. naaaa, not at all... hell man i wouldnt want the stress or expectations asked from me.
FWIW, i do "mentor" down here, but I believe in letting those that want assistance should ask whom they are comfortable with and not be told, ie: yes it takes some time for someone to know a person hence its those I have knowen for a while that ask, eg: at the moment HOT is learning about prepearing a race bike (tiz being worked on in my garage but I only supervise) we also have been going over race techniques etc at the track and on the comp. So I am all in favour of helping, when they show a keen interest.

NB: when asked for help the 1st thing I say is Im still learning every day and my beliefs/stiles work for me and may not for others.

Unlike Dangerous suggests... Im half taking the piss and half serious, no offence to the ME's

lol i was taking the piss too. Gosh so defensive... the mentors provide a good service and I am grateful. But stirring is fun...

cheers mentors, maybe a beer for you's if I ever meet you. Though there is one or two mentors who do seem a bit fucked in the head. hahaha :calm:

Well I've had quite a few!
Some have wanted advice on bike handling, braking, road positioning, specific aspects of riding etc. Some wanted simply to go out for a ride for a for an hour or so and wanted feed back on there riding. Some, advice on Bike maintenance. Some have been happy to have questions answered via emails or phone calls. I've taken a couple on a track day and worked with them on track craft and bike prep. Its been about a 80:20 split between those that have made direct contact and those that have been 'referred'.

Mentors aren't about being know it alls, there about wanting to help others know more about what they enjoy doing. If I were to be asked something I knew nothing about I would either find the answer out for them or point them in the direction that they might find the answer. I enjoy motorcycling and am happy to help anybody else in any way I can to improve the experience of bike riding, be that the simple defensive commute to work each day or the knee down apex to apex rush of a track day.

If you want to knock the mentor initiative go ahead. But remember for every one of you there are tens of others who benefit from it.
