Pondering doing a week or 2 week SI tour in mid - late may. Just wondering what the weather is like then - is it cold? Wet? Is the bottom of the SI significantly colder?
Haven't been to the SI before so any intell would be great.
Oh yeah and I'm from AKL so thats my reference point :)

Auckland less 10° would pretty much sum it up at this time of year.
LOL... its snowing :) I should have been good weather for touring... but NOT.

Count on the worst possible scenario.
Chances are that it will be even worse....
On the other hand, if it is better then horrendous you will be pleasantly surprised!
It will be cold
It will rain.
There will be frost.
But you will more then likely also have (some) glorious blue sky (milky) sunny days...( between 10 and 4 )

Bullshite. The sun was out today, the birds were singing, scattered cloud. And I had to work. The mountain passes were a little icy in parts, but circumnavigation of the southern isle, can be done at lower altitudes. Cooler than the north, but mostly fine. Expect the wet, dress for cold, and no problems will be had.
