View Full Version : GN250 top speed
I test rode a GN250 and was not sure if it was running correctly seemed a bit flat like the jetting was wrong
Whats the top speed on these mean machines???

Maybe a genuine 110-120kph -- 130kph under exceptional circumstances (wind or drafting, downhill etc.).
HMMMNN, thanks the one I rode was about right then

Me thinks me new bike may need some fine tuning!
my top speed was about 140 down the methven straight with a backwind...
but 130 is about tops if ya squat down a bit

Yeah, it should do at least 127 on the flat without wind help.

just slightly faster than walking......
the only one i've ridden showed 130k's on the speedo, sounded like it was going to explode...

Yip mine did about that speed, tested it once I had sold it on the straights just after Ruakaka....taking it to its new owner, passing a milk tanker...140 I think rung out!

I thought I read somewhere that is dangerous to try move too quick on a GN 250
as at the revs and the strain placed on the motor, the valve springs start to wear and eventually let go?
I cant find a source for that right now however.
could just be the chinese ones?

142km/hr on a very long flat road, little wind on a stock GN250 with the carb tuned, sitting on the pillion seat with my head on the tank.
Thats 2nd place, 1st is Banzai with another 5km/hr or so but he changed the sprockets and putting a screen on his (he's also a skinny fella).
So you COULD loose your license on the open road on a GN 250 :D

I think it will be a long time before you reach them too! Takes about 5 mins with the throttle pinned to get close
The GN isnt designed to go that fast though, it's still a GREAT bike though and i still miss mine every now and then.

I had a GN250 for about 3 months, got sick of it. Its a good first bike, you really cannot do anything wrong on it. I would have to say, that the top speed for me was 90-100kms and if I was going down hill, I got to about 120kms. Infact the only time I really got excited on it was when the baffle fell off (and it was new bike) it sounded kinda cooler... for a GN. Couldnt pass cars on it though, all they had to do was speed up alittle and then I was ferked.

Man you needed to really ring the snot out of it then Lissa :)
I managed to overtake a bus  a bus. Mind it took about 500 metres to do it, but I managed :D
Yeah the trusty GN is not a speed demon for sure, even chopping down a gear or 2 doesn't help that much, just seems like the engine is going to explode!
However, it is a really reliable commuter bike, and a great learner machine. You wont get in trouble on it (unless you still have those plastic OEM tyres and ride in the wet) and it is a perfect choice for a learner that needs to build confidence.

I did ring the snot out of it, but my bandit is way better (160 top speed, but am sure it can do better)
But yea, the plastic tyres which mine had arent good, best to change them. As a learner bike I agree its a good confidence booster.

120km and the bike could have gone a wee bit faster if the snoozer in the car in front didn't keep slowing down. Now the chain has been fixed the OWNER recons Ermintrude is a new bike!!

Hmm could make for a bit of fun. GN250 speed trials.
Wonder what the mechanical limitations of the gearing would be?
Actual top speed I'd say is < 110 clicks as you can go past a cop with a radar whilst being `flat on the tank' so to speak (on the way to last years cold kiwi). Its a weird feeling. Even weirder is that only 2 bikes passed me on the way, one of which I got back on the access road in.
As gutless as the engine is, I really wouldnt want any more power with that chassis...

It's a great bike to learn on I've had mine for 12 months and have done 6000 kms on it. Just got my full license today so the GN did a good job.
Have had it up to 125 kph twice on the flat with a little tail wind, and regularly to about 118 kph. I have even over taken other bikers.... I bet they felt real sick when they realised what had just passed them! Time to buy a bigger bike now though..........

Come to think of it, i mis my GN..had her up to 127ish kph (on the straights) on the way to Rotorua, however averaging about 90 all the way.. It was a bit hard heading up hills but on the way down, choice!!
Drove my GN 4 months almost everyday.. Had her to Rotorua and back twice and i regularly basis, travelled to Hams.... Anyway
I loved the GN for its "keep on keeping on attitude" however, i dont miss the raw power it had lol.

It weighs f**k all. But 17hp and aerodynamics of a tissue box equals a slow top speed. 135km? That's the highest claim I have heard for an fxr150, good effort:rockon: 135km is near the end of 4th on my slower than a paraplegic running spada...:scooter:

I can never quite work out bike top speeds. Take two bikes with almost identical weight and horsepower and the speed it can attain often varies wildly. Anyway, does weight matter in top speed? I don't think weight figures into the equation at all, it's only relevant in acceleration?
I figure it must be something to do with aerodynamics. Despite what they look like and what intuition might suggest, motorcycles are actually terribly unaerodynamic. Most bikes get nowhere near the sort of drag coefficients your average Jap sedan has. Naked bikes are particularly rubbish of course, and that might have something to do with it; perhaps a GN with its tall forks has a lot of swirling and confused air around in front of the engine. Who knows.
I mean look at the original Speed Twin. 27bhp; my RS when new made 26bhp. Nonetheless the Speed Twin comes close to cracking 100mph (not quite there though). RS never got close to that. Of course different ways of measuring power figures come into play but it's roughly correct.

The nail just got hit there mate. The main disadvantage of a motorcycle is the c.d, your typical garden variety porsche 911 has a c.d of around .29, versus a hayabusbusbus which for a botormike is rather slippery at around .7 from memory.

I imagine the least aerodynamic part of a motorbike is usually the guy sitting on it..
Wonder if more aerodynamic gear would help or just make riding harder?

There's definitely a difference on my gutless piece of shit between wearing loose flappy PVC wets and an open-face compared with zip-together leathers and a full-face -- maybe 10kph+ at the top end.

I managed over 135 going down a hill on mine. This was on a dry day with no wind on a nice clean piece of asphelt - and I still wouldn't recommend trying this. I really don't think the frame and suspention are designed for high speed, bike feels a little numb past 120.
I find 110km/h on the flat is no problem, but as soon as you add wind or a slight incline you are at full throttle watching the speedo drop. Fun little bikes, but not good on the ego when you're on long straights. Overtaking on one forms good habits though - you have to think ahead, get in the right gear at the right speed before the overtaking lane starts and you can usually squeeze past most slowpokes.

It's still air cooled though, less ability to expel heat from combustion obviously, which means for reliability [not like our race car] you have to run less aggressive cam profiles [acceleration/deceleration faces, not duration] and have smaller valves. That's the flaws with air cooling, you are relying on airflow, the oil and air fuel mixture entering the combustion chamber to cool it.
I reckon you could get a reliable 30hp from one though.
The old briggs & Stratton power junior dragster made 40hp, very peaky and running on methanol. Wouldn't use it as a engine for any other purpose:(
By all means, win lotto and do a gn up!

I don't mean really trying to hot it up that much, but I'm sure there's a lot of work you could do to smooth out the ports and chamber (if the outside of the motor is anything to go off I can't imagine what the inside of the ports look like). Maybe a little skim of the head, heat wrap the pipes to keep the gases hot and moving. The primaries are a nice bend but where they join isn't particually flash.

I've had my GN up to a max of 125km/h. That was wide open in 5th down a steep hill. It wasn't very long though, so I could have gone much faster if there wasn't a corner 200m away.
I haven't done a proper top speed test in "speed mode" though.
On the straights (and a windless day) it's capable of 100-110km/h without any hassles.

On a recent trip to Te Kuiti I was wide-open in fourth to hold 95km/h up a couple of the steep hills. I feel sorry for my mate on his ZX10R that rides with me. He can do that in 1st! Haha
