No, those are whore berries, or in street lingo - ho berries

What we are looking for here are the berries of a Hawthorn bush.

She's probably been watching River Cottage on TV too much.... :)

Try this:
http://www.rivercottage.net/SeasonalRecipes~October/680/HawSinSauce.aspx

Used as a Chinese style dipping sauce - excellent with roast duck but you’ll also find it great for perking up marinades, stirring into beef or pork casseroles - you could even try adding a spoonful or two to shepherd’s pie.

Kind of a bitter-sweet taste.

I'm picking The Stranger's daughter has watched River Cottage on Prime the other night and someone has gone duck shooting??? :)

Just in case you don't find any, tell her that you can substitute cherry tomatoes for hawberries to give a variation on most Chinese recipes or similar that call for hawberries. Better if they aren't too ripe.

Yumm....I'm feeling hungry.... :)

Bingo.
She manages to get me along on some wierd flights of fancy at times. Still this one is cheaper than the goat, which wound up costing several hundred dollars for the spit too.

there are stretches of hawthorn hedge down Beaver Road West (south of Bombay!) and in the fields behind Plantbarn garden centre on Botany rd. Quite a few islolated road side shrubs aroun Papakura/Drury... depends where you are...

PS- apologies if this is a sensible answer!

Yeah, kind of hard to know here if sensibile is expected or not.
Thank you for that. Would be good a little closer to West Auckland, but I shall check it out anyway.

"Norfolk King Drive" Puke' East, always good for a chuckle! Especially when you consider the price of the houses down that previously old farm track

Well blimey, I never knew they were edible - I've been munching the new leaf buds (colloquially known as "bread and cheese" because that's what they taste like) since I was a nipper...I didn't even know whitethorn had made it out here.

Anyone know if Blackthorn (sloes) made it too?
