FEAR... with all the lights out and headphones turned up loud!
F**k that... I wouldn't call it an FPS, you barely shoot anything real  and spend most of your time crapping your pants
FEAR... with all the lights out and headphones turned up loud!
Nothing beats Quake or Doom for the scare effect (yup, old school)
Serious sam was a good one years ago, and also UT...
Fuck you all.
The genre reached it's pinnacle with Wolfenstein 3D.
the halo series is bout the best fps is my opinion, got some nice easy to kill aliens mixed with some smart ones, and best thing they dont all jump out from behind shit and blow you away before you know wtfs going on. Also tom clancy vegas 2 was pretty epic if you like some tactics, flashbangs and snake cams etc

All the steam ones, Half Life, Half Life 2, Half Life 2 episode 1, Half life 2 episode 2, Counter Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source, Left 4 Dead, etc etc
medal of honor airborne was cool for the novelty factor of bailing from a plane and the controls with cover but kinda lacking next to cod4 farcry 2 is alright but gets wayyyyy to repetitive smart AI in it but still way to easy to off em

Medal of Honour and Call of Duty are both excellent action adventure games.
I used to play SOCOM with headset. We used to form Armys with mates and fight real wars. You can talk to your fellow team mates with the headset.
Also, Platoon is pretty good with great music. And the Conflict series has some great action. Sound effects make you fall over thinking you're been shot. Make sure noone's watching :)
If you look at this site, you will see how they compare, plus some others too:

Unreal Tournament 2004
This.
UT3 is also pretty good, runs beaut on even a low-tier system.
Crysis? Ahem, lol. Enjoy spending over $3000 just to stay close to 50 fps at a decent resolution on mostly high settings.
CoD4 and UT3 are really all I play.

I have a PC on my 46" LCD TV. It copes pretty well with the demanding stuff, but I am looking to get something with a meatier video card.

ATI 4850 1gb, or a 216SP GTX260 1GB.
If you're thinking of a little less dorrah, go for the 4830.

Crap, haven't played CoD 5 yet... might have to finally look at upgrading my pair of 7950GT :crybaby:
Sucks when you have three screens... you have to buy gfx cards in pairs :sweatdrop
thats why I just dont play games on pc, you may lose some game play but why spend so much when you can get an 360 for $350, and cod 4 is my favorite, didn't like 5

Yes these are good cards but I don't think I can get what I would like in a half height slot; hence I was going to use this as an opportunity to upgrade the box.

Because an xbox can't handle 3 screens, programming, software, and almost 3tb of hard drive space in raid. ;)
My brother also had 3 xbox 360 fail on him...

Quakelive is working now - http://www.quakelive.com/
Short version: quake 3, cleaned up marginally and made into a browser plug-in - the whole game runs in a kinda social network thing. Being old code, low poly models etc it goes like a rocket on even medium/low-end hardware. Oh, and it's free.
There are people on there appear to have been playing more or less constantly for the ten years q3 has been out and hence are :gob: good but the games are skill level matched. I've not been playing for a few years and hence suck badly. See you there :)

BF2(battlefield 2) you can fly choppers/jets drive tanks & play co operative with flatmates against the AI...
I've played many horror games (RE, Silent hill) and seen most of the horror movies at my local video store but still I get jumped when playing "Doom 3". Even with the cheats on (god mode, all weapon, go through fuckn wall etc) I still chicken out. Seriously, Doom 3 is my fav/ best game. Period.

Really? Wooooowwwww. It had too many monster cupboards for me - I got a little "over" dumping my guts everytime something jumps out to eat my face. Quake 4 is really good. It has some real "cannon fodder" team based stuff and really really bad vehicle physics but it was FUN!

'The orange box'. Hl2, Hl2 episode one, Episode 2, Portal, Team Fortress Two.
$30 USD on Steam.

Lol, ya. My GT at stocks speeds is slightly slower than a 4830.
As soon as I get another job, 4870.

+1 for URT (Unreal Tournament) almost any edition
it's cheap, you can set up bots and it runs beautifully on mediocre hardware
We use to play it on bog standard Dells at work -but er - ahem - only after hours - honest.
;o)
doom3 pissed me off i mean cant duct tape a freaking light to your gun?:argh:

If you have never played them then you have to try Unreal & Unreal II. Half life is another must.
they may be old games but the stories are first rate and the games are long. It's also amazing how good the graphic engines were made. With everything turned up and on they still look very good compared to new game engines.

Depends on if you want to play online or not. I'll assume you want to play online, and actually have a decent choice of servers etc to play on.
COD4 obviously, COD5 not so much (COD2 is still more popular than COD5)
Wolfenstein ET is still pretty popular online, despite being pretty well dated.
Left 4 Dead is up there.
Various HL2/Source games esp Counter Strike and Day of Defeat
Battlefield 2142 and Battlefield 2

I've been waiting for someone to mention Deus Ex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex). It's a 1st person shooter/sneaky type thing - very non linear gameplay.

Ooohhhh *pricks up her ears* I'm way out of touch with the newer games, but I still LOVE playing CS and DoD.
DoD rocks my socks off..... I get to shoot shoot shoot and it cost me like $10US for 3 Source games.
Headsets help too, some of the guys get so serious about it LOL

Heh. Used to play the multiplayer demo over and over again when it first came out... Wake Island is still a good map after thousands of rounds played.
I remembered it again a few months ago; bought the 7-fooking-CD complete box set on Trademe. Just wanted the CD key really to play online. BF1942 + SW + RtR + Vietnam.
Forgotten Hope is an amazing mod. Shame there's not more players in Oceania so you can get a decent game.
A challenger appears: Battlefield Heroes. Stupid fun. Beta keys are being handed out left right and centre, too -- sign up to Filefront or whatever, there's instructions all over the place.

Will tip my hat in here for the Half Life series... fackin well put together games... Halo 2 after that (bloody flood), too much fun for online... Having said that though i haven't played on a PC for the last 5 years, but have owned 3 xbox 360's... all of which worked perfectly, all of which were sold after the birth of one of my kids... I must be due another soon (360)...

I have the Oceania Forgotten Hope server under my bed
Unplugged it last year finally.
FH was/is the best online multi player game of all time. Managed to get some large scale organised battles going. 64 players, simply amazing!!!

It still has the coolest weapons
Quake3 - Freeze mod
BF 1942/Vietnam - awesome game and hate that BF2 killed it off
BF 2142 was an abortion
BF2 was excellent to begin with but now annoys me and full of spammers and campers
COD4 was good to start with but small maps etc just gets boring

DOOM is pretty awesome, but it does however require 4 Mbs of RAM and a 33+ MHz processor. Pretty trick equipment.
If you don't meet those requirements Wolfenstein 3D isn't half bad either. Nothing beats gunning down ROBO-HITLER in Episode 3. :headbang:
