Anyone got some good rides around Auckland that does not involve riding 50km down the motorway first?
Route 16 getting a bit boring.
Need twisties, some tight stuff and some a bit faster
coro loops good but a bit boring when 140kms is motorway riding

Nice ride. Some tight bends.

Piha is very quite good when there isn't any traffi. You could sneak in a ride early in the tomorrow morning like from 8 ish and you'll be good.

I could see that it could get busy tomorrow due to the fine weather that we'll be having!

The road to Waiuku, then out to the heads or Pukekohe. Turn left or right off SH16 and there's lots of cool twisty roads with not much traffic.

Yeah Piha and the scenic drive are good as is the road out to Huia, I'm not sure if it's still like (been a few years since last out there) that but the section after Little Huia to Whatipu was not sealed, fun bit of road on a dual purpose though.

Also instead of going past Helensville on Highway 16, Turn off to the right just before Kumeu and take the old north road that cuts thru the Riverhead forest and comes out at Kaukapakapa. ;)

Instead of going all the way to Piha, turn off and go down to karekare and go back up via lone kauri rd.
Twisties galore!!!!!

A bit of fun in the wet and it does not get a lot of sun in the winter, so can be a bit of a handfull if you pour on the gas too early...fun, fun!

did it today, big smiles and a couple of pucker moments.

Oh yeah, not a lot of people know about it (untill now I guess)

Yeah I used to do surf rescue down there a really great road but uber narrow and greasy in winter!
Watch out for cars/4wd's going the other way!!!!
Seen a couple of head to heads down there. :gob:

Stage one:

Pack your bike well, take some good woollen undies etc. Head south. When you get to Wellington, get on the ferry, disembark at Picton.

Stage two:
Don't go back.

I live on Huia road and it's a pretty bloody good way to start and end the day. Unless it's raining then its a long slippery pain in the arse.
And, what he said, its not sealed past Huia.

there is a lot of tight twisty roads out in the Waitakere ranges, the road to Piha can get a bit busy.
Get a map and plan a path in the Henderson Valley to Bethels area. I have taken a few friends on the back roads out there and all were impressed.
Not any high speed stuff really but just trying to do the posted speed limit can be a decent challenge.

Best time is off peak, avoid after 8.30 sat and sun mornings. I find dawn best on sundays, no traffic but cool tyres so be careful.

Has anyone mentioned SH22? Start around Tuakau and head down towards Raglan, it's a pretty sweet road as long as you're cautious about the odd (ok maybe several) farm animal.

There's no way you'd be able to lose your license in the fun bit tho. Even nailing it up and over the hill you're not gonna hit 100km/h much.

I guess the problem is getting all pumped and then getting the straighter bits at either end

The words "time" and "place" come to mind.

Out of all the roads mentioned (I've tried them all) I'd say SH22 is the best. The roads through the waitakeres the corners are too tight, too blind, there's too many driveways and traffic and cyclists. SH16 is a bit too open and straight (west coast rd/woodcocks rd is good though). SH22 is a nice balance and a good length. Some of the other roads off it are excellent as well.

You can also check out the road leading to Bethells beach. It is on the other side of Piha, and is really nice and twisty :D Watch out when you do it for the first time tho as there are a few turns that can catch you off guard if you dont pay attenton.

here is a linky... (http://maps.google.co.nz/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=waitakere&daddr=bethells+beach&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=-36.878247,174.508553&sspn=0.194162,0.308647&ie=UTF8&z=13)

nice and quiet if you are into romantic walks with the misses also - there are some places where noone can see you so you can be as romantic as you want ;) There are also a few caves you can explore

A really good but short piece of road in town is riddal rd in St hellers

even at 50 some of the turns are fun and no cars can come out as most of the best corners have stop banks on then so no drive ways
