Changing VL250 Suzuki Intruder exhaust?

yes im new to this site.....
i have a vl250 intruder, with the stock exhaust still on. im wondering how to take it off to put on my new pipes.....im guessing just unbolt everything, but id rather that a pro guided me. dont want to ruin it :S

Sorry fellow intruder rider. I cant offer you any mechanical guidance but depending on how mechanically confident you are you can

(a) give it a go anyway and if anything goes wrong take it to your local suzuki agent or trusted mechanic to get the new pipes fitted/fixed.

(b) take it to your local suzuki agent or trusted mechanic to get the new pipes fitted in the first place.

Goodluck with that. Do share with us how it went. There are a few intruder owners here who are keen to know where you sourced your new pipes from and what they look/sound like. :yes:

Exhausts are usually bolt on/bolt off (....like wax on/wax off)

I've upgraded them on a car and scooter before, was very easy.

Depending on what your new exhaust is, the tricky bit might be the tuning of the bike afterwards.

Sometimes paying for it to be done is the best option, although if its a 5 min job, they might charge you for a whole hour as minimum charge.

thanks for your replies =] well i will get on it straight away, just that the weather is shocking at the moment (thunder, hail) im in the process of finding the right socket set piece, the spanners that come with the bike are not the best. i will let you know how it goes.

The main thing to be careful of is the gaskets on the exhaust flanges.

I want to do something about my exhaust too, but I really don't want to void my warranty.. and also depending on how the new exhaust flows compared to the old one it may cause the engine to run lean, risking burnt valves, your carb may need a new carb jet kit fitted.

I'm interested to see your new pipes and maybe where you got them from.

Unfortunately mate if you are looking for VL250 specific pipes locally it will be difficult. I made some inquiries into this round about the time I got my VL but some of the pricing put me off and most of the suppliers were in UK or North America or Brazil.

Another option is that you go down the custom route and get one custom made for your bike. Googling or using yellow pages I'm sure will give you some places around auckland that do custom pipes.

But be careful, if done improperley it can sound pretty poor and as noted above can harm your motor or void your warranty.

Without seeing them I can't say how hard it'll be to just remove your existing mufflers and put on some that sound a little nicer / perform a little better. However, I can say that if you do modify / swap the mufflers it shouldn't have a negative effect on the motor. Most Harley owners safely open up the exhaust and unless they also open up the inlet side of things they don't have to mess around with the jets / fuel injection map.
