Hey,

Getting into the off road side of things and am pretty keen on a 03 yzf250, took it for a test ride up the street and seems to go well, quite tidy for age. What should I be checking to make sure its not about to lunch itself

No hour meter

Has about 2-3mm play in swing arm and end of swing arm, shocks don't leak, no noise from steering head, wheel bearings have no play.

Current owner is a old guy and he doesn't seem like the kind to miss treat it, has owned it for 3 years and had a problem with rear shock - dented/chipped and was breaking seal and leaking oil so he replaced it, and had a hole in radiator which he got fixed, and he said had no other problems.

What are others thoughts on the bike?

sounds like you checked the main stuff already, also check for any fluid leaks. Im not sure what to check engine wise as im a two stroke fan. Though if it hasnt had a full top end rebuild yet its probly due for one.

Nice. What price? I just picked up an 01 YZF250 on friday and rode it at woodhill on Saturday.

I don't find it heavier than my cr125 which surprised me. I am quite impressed with it as a bike. Starts reliably. Apparently the 03's are quite an improvement too as they have some cam changes to help with hot starting.

They seem to blow rear shocks. Mine had just been serviced too.

I say go for it. They get rave reviews if you are comparing it across the year.

check under the rubber bumpstop on the rear shock damper rod (or anywhere on the damper shaft) for any pitting or corrosion if it has been on the beach and salt water has been under there the next time you bottom it out (it can compress 50%) the pitting/corrosion will rip out the oil seal.
