My bike is a CBR 600RR. It has 26k km on the OEM chain and sprockets. They still look pretty good but I recently had to adjust the chain and the wear indicator is now nearing the end of the "green" zone. I figure I should look into getting a new chain/sprockets for insurance and peace of mind.

There seem to be lots of places to buy kits online (ex states) but I want to buy locally (Pukekohe or Auckland) if I can.

If hard anodised alloy sprockets get me another 25k I'll go those but if not I don't mind steel. I'm thinking: DID 525VM and AFAM (are these expensive?) or JT sprockets (are these any good?)

Does anybody have any better chain/sprocket recommendations?

chain - decide if you want gold, gold & black, or black, or just plain metal.

Then there is brand did, rk are better brands, then there is o-ring type, o, w, x -- w & x are better, etc.

Sprocket - pretty much all the same, personally just get a basic run of mill front sprocket, since you don't see it (i have a jt on my gsxr600), and get a nice looking rear sprocket. With rear sprockets you can get different colours, black, gold, blue, then types of metal, steal/aliuman/hard anodised/tri metal(mix of steal/aliuman).

Final opinion is you can acutally go to a 520 kit. instead of using standard 525 pitch you can go down to a 520 pitch, this is deamed more race setup, they say since its light it will help spin up faster, but really its only 1kg if ya lucky lighter. But up side is better range of sprockets in 520 size i have found. 520 chains are just as strong(and some even stronger) as 525/530 chains, so don't worry about it not being strong enough.

Hey thanks dude.

I want, local shop, >20,000 km, cool looking, and good price... in that order.

A cool looking black sprocket and gold/black chain would be awesome. I'm also ok with the idea of a 520 conversion if it opens up more options, especially since I'm not hard on the bike. I have read that EK and RK are strong chains in 520 but I'm not sure who has them.

The local guys have recommended a Chiaravalli steel 525 (never heard of them before) and DID VM2. The rear sprocket is not cool looking (looks like my silver OEM) but apparently it's well made, will last a long time, and it's a reasonable price.
I'm told about $500 all fitted (front, rear, chain)

I'll ring around to see what's out there... maybe Mt Eden or Cycletreads?

Ring Cycletreads and see if they can do kitset deals for you. I know sometimes they offer 530 x-ring chain with front and rear sprockets for $299 plus half an hour labour for install.

edit: the 520 chain may be 50 bucks cheaper and the cool looking ones tend to be pricey

I registered with Cycletreads a while back and wouldn't you know it, today they emailed out their May specials and they're having chain and sprocket deals!

Sweet.
